Standardization of Chinese speech tasks for heart failure voice analysis: a cross-sectional diagnostic classification study.

BACKGROUND: Voice analysis, a non-invasive and cost-effective approach, shows potential for improving heart failure (HF) management. Previous studies mainly focused on non-Chinese voice features, and speech tasks tailored to Chinese HF patients remain lacking. This study aimed to design and optimize speech tasks for Chinese HF patients and establish a foundation for a Chinese HF voice database. METHODS: A total of 203 participants (101 HF patients and 102 healthy controls) were recruited from The Affiliated Taizhou People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. Based on Chinese phonetics, 1

Relationship of Hearing Loss to Parkinson's Disease, Dementia, and APOE Genotype in Adults.

Background: Hearing loss has been recognized as a risk factor for dementia and non-motor features of Parkinson's disease (PD). The apolipoprotein E (APOE) protein contributes to maintenance and repair of neuronal cell membranes, causing age-related disorders. This study aimed to analyze the impact of hearing loss on cognitive impairment, PD severity, and APOE gene expression in these patients. Methods: A total of 72 out-patients diagnosed with either PD or hearing loss were enrolled in this study. The hearing assessment included pure-tone audiometry, speech reception thresholds, and speech dis

Bone Conduction Implants: Comparative of Audiometric Results and Quality-of-Life Bonebridge® versus Osia®.

INTRODUCTION: Bone conduction implants have been indicated for patients with conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, and even profound unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. With the introduction of Bonebridge®, new transcutaneous implant options emerged. The latest is Osia®, a direct-drive variant or active systems, where the implant directly generates and applies vibration to the bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of two cohorts of patients treated with active bone conduction implants at a single center, one with the Bonebridge® device and the other with Osia®. OUTCOMES:

[Auditory results after transtemporal removal of acoustic neurinoma].

A retrospective study was conducted to assess results of hearing in patients who underwent resections of acoustic neuromas via the middle fossa approach. A statistical correlation of results with preoperative clinical and audiological data determined if any prognostic indicators could be associated with successful preservation of hearing. Of 93 patients included in the study, useful hearing was preserved in 54 (58%), while hearing was preserved within 10 dB of preoperative levels in 42 patients (45%). The possibility for hearing preservation appeared to be inversely related to the size of the

Comparison between a new implantable transcutaneous bone conductor and percutaneous bone-conduction hearing implant.

OBJECTIVES: Despite good results on osseointegration and limited skin reactions with percutaneous bone conductors, there remains room for improvement. Especially in children, adverse events with percutaneous bone conductors might occur more frequently. Transcutaneous bone conductors, if powerful enough, can provide a solution that minimizes adverse events and implant loss. This study compares a new transcutaneous bone conduction hearing aid, the Sophono Alpha 1 (Sophono), with the percutaneous BAHA system (BAHA). METHODS: In our tertiary referral center, 12 patients (age 5-12 yr) with congeni

Pseudo-sudden deafness.

OBJECTIVES: We describe the symptom complex and management of a clinical entity we refer to as "pseudo-sudden deafness," which is an episode of acute otitis media that leads to sensorineural hearing loss with reduced speech discrimination. METHODS: We included 8 adult patients with audiometrically confirmed, asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss with decreased speech discrimination that presented after an episode of acute otitis media. Magnetic resonance imaging ruled out retrocochlear disease. Both physical examination and myringotomy helped confirm the diagnosis of serous otitis media (SOM)

Sporadic and NF2-associated vestibular schwannoma surgery and simultaneous cochlear implantation: a comparative systematic review.

PURPOSE: Cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with sensorineural hearing loss caused by a vestibular schwannoma (VS) represents a unique subtype of hearing rehabilitation, as the outcome may be compromised by vestibulocochlear nerve injury as part of the natural VS history or due to iatrogenic trauma induced by surgical tumor removal. This paper aims to review and report contemporary knowledge and practice regarding feasibility and outcomes of simultaneous vestibular schwannoma resection and cochlear implantation to serve as a reference and guide for future surgery and studies. METHODS: The
