Contribution of consonant versus vowel information to sentence intelligibility for young normal-hearing and elderly hearing-impaired listeners.

The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of information provided by vowels versus consonants to sentence intelligibility in young normal-hearing (YNH) and typical elderly hearing-impaired (EHI) listeners. Sentences were presented in three conditions, unaltered or with either the vowels or the consonants replaced with speech shaped noise. Sentences from male and female talkers in the TIMIT database were selected. Baseline performance was established at a 70 dB SPL level using YNH listeners. Subsequently EHI and YNH participants listened at 95 dB SPL. Participants listened to ea

[Language development disorders--studies of preschool children of the Leipzig special language school].

Children with severe speech disorders were examined to determine the causes of their abnormal speech development. Thirty-seven preschool and school-age children were followed up and results compared. All children had low intelligence quotients, with most of the children coming from low social backgrounds. However, both of these factors (intelligence and low social background) had no influence on the improvement of speech levels after therapy. Two-thirds of the children with moderate conductive hearing losses showed improvement after therapy, so that the effect of this hearing loss was believed

Identification of Mandarin Tones in Loud Speech for Native Speakers and Second Language Learners.

Teachers often raise their vocal volume to improve intelligibility or capture students' attention. While this practice is common in second language (L2) teaching, its effects on tone perception remain understudied. To fill this gap, this study explores the effects of loud speech on Mandarin tone perception for L2 learners. Twenty-two native Mandarin speakers and twenty-two Thai L2 learners were tested on their perceptual accuracy and reaction time in identifying Mandarin tones in loud and normal modes. Results revealed a significant between-group difference: native speakers consistently demons

Predicted effects of sensorineural hearing loss on across-fiber envelope coding in the auditory nerve.

Cross-channel envelope correlations are hypothesized to influence speech intelligibility, particularly in adverse conditions. Acoustic analyses suggest speech envelope correlations differ for syllabic and phonemic ranges of modulation frequency. The influence of cochlear filtering was examined here by predicting cross-channel envelope correlations in different speech modulation ranges for normal and impaired auditory-nerve (AN) responses. Neural cross-correlation coefficients quantified across-fiber envelope coding in syllabic (0-5 Hz), phonemic (5-64 Hz), and periodicity (64-300 Hz) modulatio…

Speech after repair of isolated cleft palate and cleft lip and palate.

The speech of children with isolated cleft palate (CP) repaired by one surgeon has been compared with the speech of children with some form of unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) repaired by the same surgeon. All palate repairs included an intravelar veloplasty. We identified 57 children (5--12 years old) with cleft palates repaired in infancy, of which three patients with other medical problems were excluded. Of the 54 patients, 44 (81%) attended for review (27 CP, 17 CLP). Video recordings were analysed by two speech and language therapists, using the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech. The C

The effect of changes in hearing status on speech sound level and speech breathing: a study conducted with cochlear implant users and NF-2 patients.

According to a dual-process theory of the role of hearing in speech production, hearing helps maintain an internal model used by the speech control mechanism to achieve phonemic goals. It also monitors the acoustic environment and guides relatively rapid adjustments in postural parameters, such as those underlying average speech sound level and rate, in order to achieve suprasegmental goals that are a compromise between intelligibility and economy of effort. In order to obtain evidence bearing on this theory, acoustic and aerodynamic measures were collected from seven adventitiously deaf speak

Long-Term Speech Outcomes in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: A Comparative Study of Early and Delayed Hard Palate Closure.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the comparative effectiveness of surgical protocols for cleft lip and palate remains limited, especially regarding long-term speech outcomes. Therefore, this study evaluates speech outcomes at 5, 12, and 22 years in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) to guide protocol selection. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 285 UCLP patients treated at 2 Dutch academic hospitals. Patients were assessed at 1 of 3 predefined ages (5, 12, or 22 y) during routine follow-up; only a minority were assessed at more than one time point. Four protoco

Can you feel what I am saying? Speech-based vibrotactile stimulation enhances the cortical tracking of attended speech in a multi-talker background.

In environments with multiple talkers, humans can 'tune in' to a speaker of interest while ignoring competing voices. In such conditions, however, auditory cortices track the attended speech envelope rhythms (cortical tracking of speech, CTS) less accurately than in quiet, hindering intelligibility. Visual speech cues (e.g., lip movements) can enhance this CTS, but it remains unclear whether other non-auditory sensory cues, such as tactile input, provide comparable benefits through similar neural mechanisms. Here, using magnetoencephalography, we quantified CTS as the coherence between the spe

The Impact of Clear Speech on the Perceptual and Acoustic Properties of Fricative-Vowel Sequences in Speakers With Dysarthria.

Purpose Studies have reported that clear speech has the potential to influence suprasegmental and segmental aspects of speech, in both healthy and dysarthric speakers. While the impact of clear speech has been studied on the articulation of individual segments, few studies have investigated its effects on coarticulation with multisegment sequences such as fricative-vowel. Objectives The goals of this study are to investigate, in healthy and dysarthric speech, the impact of clear speech on (a) the perception of anticipatory vowel coarticulation in fricatives and (b) the acoustic characteristics

Auditory cortical delta-entrainment interacts with oscillatory power in multiple fronto-parietal networks.

The timing of slow auditory cortical activity aligns to the rhythmic fluctuations in speech. This entrainment is considered to be a marker of the prosodic and syllabic encoding of speech, and has been shown to correlate with intelligibility. Yet, whether and how auditory cortical entrainment is influenced by the activity in other speech-relevant areas remains unknown. Using source-localized MEG data, we quantified the dependency of auditory entrainment on the state of oscillatory activity in fronto-parietal regions. We found that delta band entrainment interacted with the oscillatory activity
