Primary progressive aphasia: a model for neurodegenerative disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Knowledge on primary progressive aphasia (PPA) has expanded rapidly in the past few decades. Clinical characteristics, neuroimaging correlates, and neuropathological features of PPA are better delineated. This facilitates scientific studies on the disease pathophysiology and allows speech and language therapy to be more precisely targeted. This review article begins with a summary of the current understanding of PPA and discusses how PPA can serve as a model to promote scientific discovery in neurodegenerative diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies on the different variants of

Behavioral and neural discrimination of speech sounds after moderate or intense noise exposure in rats.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is a commonly experienced disability in a variety of populations including veterans and the elderly and can often cause significant impairment in the ability to understand spoken language. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that neural and behavioral responses to speech will be differentially impaired in an animal model after two forms of hearing loss. DESIGN: Sixteen female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to one of two types of broadband noise which was either moderate or intense. In nine of these rats, auditory cortex recordings were taken 4 weeks after noise

The impact of vocal intensity and pitch modulation on nasalance scores: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of pitch and intensity modulation on nasalance scores. METHODS: A single-group pretest-posttest design was used in which subjects produced reading passages at different pitch and intensity levels. The Nasometer was used for the registration of nasalance scores in subjects with and without cleft palate. RESULTS: An increase in intensity in the non-cleft group resulted in a small but significant decrease in nasalance. Lowering the pitch level resulted in a small but significant decrease in nasalance scores for both the non-cleft an

Effectiveness of an adapted Interdisciplinary Orofacial Examination Protocol for Children and Adolescents for the Early Identification of Speech Disorders in Paediatric Orthodontic Patients.

AIM: Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) affect oral functions and influence craniofacial development, contributing to skeletal and dental malocclusions. The collaboration between orthodontists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) is crucial for early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic competence of orthodontic residents in identifying OMDs, and to determine whether the application of a standardised interdisciplinary orofacial assessment protocol enhances diagnostic accuracy and interprofessional consistency. METHODS: Twenty-nine postgrad

Safety behaviors and speech treatment for adults who stutter.

PURPOSE: Those with anxiety use safety behaviors when attempting to prevent negative outcomes. There is evidence that these behaviors contribute to the persistence of anxiety disorders. Safety behaviors have been prominent in the cognitive behavior therapy literature during the last decade, particularly with social phobia management. However, nothing is known of safety behavior use by those who stutter. This is surprising given the high prevalence of social phobia in the stuttering population who seek clinical help. METHOD: Clinical psychologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) create

Assessing and managing medically fragile children: tracheostomy and ventilatory support.

Over the past decade, there has been an increase in premature births. Children born prematurely often present with complex medical conditions; some require a tracheostomy. Although many children with tracheostomies require assistance to achieve effective communication, speech-language pathologists may have limited information with respect to the medical issues and communication needs of this population. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, a review of basic information on tracheostomy and ventilatory support in the pediatric population is provided. Second, information on the assessme

[Peripheral nervous system and speech disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Disorders affecting the lower motor neurons in childhood, with a congenital or acquired aetiology, give rise to difficulties in neuromotor response and, therefore, motor disorders affecting speech in a period that is especially critical for the development of language. The low incidence of this pathology, its comorbidity with other brain conditions and its uncertain prognosis make it a particularly interesting area of study. AIMS: The purpose of this work is to review the motor disorders affecting speech in flaccid dysarthria, together with its functional evaluation and speech t

Differential effects of early hippocampal pathology on episodic and semantic memory.

Global anterograde amnesia is described in three patients with brain injuries that occurred in one case at birth, in another by age 4, and in the third at age 9. Magnetic resonance techniques revealed bilateral hippocampal pathology in all three cases. Remarkably, despite their pronounced amnesia for the episodes of everyday life, all three patients attended mainstream schools and attained levels of speech and language competence, literacy, and factual knowledge that are within the low average to average range. The findings provide support for the view that the episodic and semantic components

Adaptation and normative data for the Comprehensive Aphasia Test in Catalan (CAT-CAT).

Assessment tools for diagnosing aphasia in languages other than English are scarce, particularly for minority languages such as Catalan. The present study introduces the Catalan adaptation of the Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT-CAT), the first assessment tool of its kind in Catalan, which was developed with careful consideration of cultural and psycholinguistic factors. Additionally, the study provides normative data based on a sample of 110 Catalan-dominant speakers without language or speech disorders in order to establish the range of non-pathological performance and cut-off scores. We also

Post-treatment speech naturalness of comprehensive stuttering program clients and differences in ratings among listener groups.

UNLABELLED: The purposes of this study were to investigate naturalness of the post-treatment speech of Comprehensive Stuttering Program (CSP) clients and differences in naturalness ratings by three listener groups. Listeners were 21 student speech-language pathologists, 9 community members, and 15 listeners who stutter. Listeners rated perceptually fluent speech samples of CSP clients obtained immediately post-treatment (Post) and at 5 years follow-up (F5), and speech samples of matched typically fluent (TF) speakers. A 9-point interval rating scale was used. A 3 (listener group)x2 (time)x2 (s

Does the recording medium influence phonetic transcription of cleft palate speech?

BACKGROUND: In recent years, analyses of cleft palate speech based on phonetic transcriptions have become common. However, the results vary considerably among different studies. It cannot be excluded that differences in assessment methodology, including the recording medium, influence the results. AIMS: To compare phonetic transcriptions from audio and audio/video recordings of cleft palate speech by means of outcomes of per cent correct consonants (PCC) and differences in consonant transcriptions. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Thirty-two 3-year-olds born with cleft palate were audio and audio/video

Effects of Cerebellar Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Bilingual Logopenic Primary Progressive Aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a language-based dementia, causing progressive decline of language functions. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can augment effects of speech-and language therapy (SLT). However, this has not been investigated in bilingual patients with PPA. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the case of Mr. G., a French (native language, L1)/Dutch (second language, L2)-speaking 59-year-old male, with logopenic PPA, associated with Alzheimer's disease pathology. We aimed to characterize his patterns of language decline and evaluate the effects of tDCS applied
