INTRODUCTION: When a child walks in the clinic with a unilateral frontal flattening, it is usually associated in our minds with unilateral coronal synostosis. While the latter might be the most common cause of anterior plagiocephaly, it is not the only one. A patent coronal suture will force us to consider other etiologies, such as deformational plagiocephaly, or synostosis of another suture. To understand the mechanisms underlying this malformation, the development and growth of the skull base must be considered.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: There have been few reports in the literature of isolate

This report describes an autopsy case of a rare longitudinal brainstem laceration associated with complex basilar skull fractures. The victim was a 40-year-old male who died immediately after falling from a roof (9.2m in height) of a factory onto a concrete floor. The postmortem examination revealed an incomplete ring fracture of the base of the skull with longitudinal fractures of the sphenoid (clivus of the dorsum sellae turcicae) and occipital bones, cerebral contusions in the frontal and temporal poles, a longitudinal brainstem laceration at the posterior median sulcus of the pons accompan

A case of sphenoethmoidal meningoencephalocele associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum and median cleft lip and palate in a baby boy is reported. Two other cases have been reported previously presenting exactly the same findings. It is possible that these malformations constitute a distinct type of congenital anomaly.

En plaque meningioma is a rare type of meningioma characterized by an infiltrative nature, sheet-like growth, and at times invading the bone. We report here a case of en plaque meningioma. The patient was a 66-year-old woman presenting with headache and painful bilateral proptosis. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bilateral en plaque meningioma showed as a bilateral hyperostotic of greater wing sphenoid bone associated with bilateral thickening and enhancement of the dura in the anterior temporal area and the retroclival region invading bilaterally the cavernous sinus, the prechi…

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) secondary to congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face (CILF) is an exceptionally uncommon condition which is characterized by the involvement of unilateral facial soft tissues and bones. In some cases, the extensive exophytic bony growth in the temporomandibular joint region often extends toward the skull base and lies near adjacent vital structures. Only very few cases of TMJA associated with CILF have been reported in the literature. The authors report a case of a 36-year-old female with right TMJA secondary to CILF. The bony overgrowth in the

BACKGROUND: Osteoma, the most common benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses, most commonly originates within the frontal sinus, followed by the ethmoid, the maxillary sinus, and finally sphenoid. Only 2 cases of osteomas of the nasal bones were previously reported. This study describes the first reported osteoma of the ascending process of maxilla and describes its management.
METHODOLOGY: A 20-year-old man was presented with left painless hard nasal swelling. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed well-circumscribed hyperdense bony mass originating from the outer surface of the left ascending p

This report describes the only case in the literature of globe luxation due to traumatic cerebrospinal fluid fistula to the orbit caused by fire gun with ocular globe maintenance. E.N., female, white, 7 months, admitted with left orbitocranial injury by fire gun. Ocular globe luxation was detected with complete ocular motility restriction and absence of pupillary reflex in the left orbit. Computed tomography showed fracture of the medial orbital wall; bone fragments near the apex of the orbit and a stretched optic nerve. Surgical exploration was performed, showing liquor fistula through the et

Craniofacial osteomas are benign tumors of the skull base, often involving the paranasal sinuses. The frontal sinus is the most common site of involvement, followed by the ethmoid, maxillary, and sphenoid sinuses, respectively. The growth rate is very slow, and it may take many years for osteomas to become clinically apparent. The origin of these tumors has been ascribed to embryologic tissue maldevelopment, trauma, or infection. The tumors are hard and lobulated with an ivory-like appearance, often mixed with a coarse granular component. The bone is compact or cancellous, with vascular or con

Thr authors report observations relative to four cases of traumatic carotid-cavernous fistulas for which angiographic pictures were similar. Autopsy examination permitted in two cases to establish that the tentorial branch of the meningo-hypophyseal trunk was involved in the genesis of both fistulas. One case was from a rupture, the other from tearing of that branch. Further examination of these two cases showed an absence of sphenoid bone fracture which suggested that any arterial perforation or shearing process could be excluded. Thus the pathogenic hypothesis of PARKINSON is further sustain…

A case of sphenoid hyperostosis is described in a patient whose clinical history and radiological work up suggested fibrous dysplasia. A year later, the biopsy and MRI showed evidence of a meningioma en plaque. Problems in the differential diagnosis are discussed among entities which present sphenoid hyperostosis: osteoma, Paget's disease, sphenoid meningioma and fibrous dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate and compare the surgical outcomes of endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) for pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) using two surgical approaches: the comprehensive structural preservation strategy based on transseptal approach (CSP-TSA) and the traditional transnasal approach (TNA).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 62 patients who underwent EES for PitNETs at our center between March 2021 and September 2024. Patients were categorized into CSP-TSA (n = 32) and TNA (n = 30) groups based on the surgical approach. Outcomes assessed included tumor rese

BACKGROUND: Spheno-orbital meningioma (SOM) represents a unique variant of sphenoid wing meningiomas, distinguished by its propensity for bone infiltration and cranio-orbital involvement. SOM exhibits a considerable incidence of misdiagnosis and recurrence.
PURPOSES: To elucidate the clinical, radiological, and pathological characteristics of SOM.
METHODS: Review of electronic medical records, histopathology, radiological images and follow-up information of 100 SOM patients.
RESULTS: Of the 100 patients (28 males, 72 females) with SOM, mean age was 46.8 ± 12.6 years and prevalent symptoms w

UNLABELLED: Intrasphenoidal encephalocoeles are acquired or congenital herniations of meninges and brain parenchyma through a structural sphenoid bone defect. Acquired causes are most common, either iatrogenic, post-traumatic, or spontaneous. However, defects in the lateral wall of the sphenoid sinus are uncommon and cephalocoeles through them relatively underexplored in current literature, warranting dedicated attention to unravel their complexities. Congenital causes such as persistence of Sternberg's canal, which can lead to lateral cephalocoeles, is a rare entity, seen in two of the presen…

Introduction Penetrating head injuries (PHIs) can have diverse presentations and mechanisms; therefore, treatment methods have not been clearly outlined. Vascular injury is common and foreign body removal is often required. We present three cases to illustrate low-velocity nonmissile penetrating head injuries (NPHIs) and discuss a multidisciplinary approach. Methods We present a case series from our institution that illustrates the importance of multidisciplinary treatment of these injuries. All injuries are low- velocity NPHIs with separate mechanisms and anatomical locations. Results Multidi

BACKGROUND: Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a pathologic condition involving the hyperaeration of one or several of the paranasal sinuses that can lead to significant deformation of the overlying bone. Although the presenting complaint of patients with PD is most commonly aesthetic in nature, the condition has also been associated with intracranial tumors and several other serious conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A meta-analysis of all available clinical publications on the subject of PD was conducted. Patients were categorized on the basis of their sinus involvement. Associated conditions wer

PURPOSE: In order to numerically compare the morphological differences of the nasal cavity and nasal sinus between acromegalics and non-acromegalics, bone window CT scans sliced parallel to the transsphenoidal surgical route were performed. MATERIAL AND CASES: Acromegalic patients had small or large macroadenomas and were 13 (7 men and 6 women) in number, aged 53.2 +/- 16.1 years. Non-acromegalic patients had pituitary tumors and were 44 (21 men and 23 women) in number, aged 52.1 +/- 12.5 years.
RESULTS: The results of acromegalics are described in comparison to non-acromegalics in parenthese

An anatomical study of the fissures related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) was performed in 40 dry human skulls. The length of the squamotympanic fissure (X), as well as those of the petrotympanic fissure (Y) and the (descending part of) the petrosquamous fissure (Z), into which the first of them (as a rule) branches, was measured. The distances between the point of this bifurcation and the deepest point of the glenoid fossa (A), the articular tubercle (B), and the styloid process (C) of the TMJ were also measured. The distances measured presented a significant variability among differen
