Risk factors for palatal and orbital involvement in mucormycosis epidemic-Report of a center in India.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis of the nose and paranasal sinuses has emerged as an epidemic following COVID-19 pandemic. The management involves surgical debridement, the extent of which depends on the bulk of the disease. Extension to the orbit and palate depends on the involvement of specific sites in the nose and paranasal sinuses. This study intended to identify those sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-center case-control study. There were 3 groups according to the region involved (Palate, orbit and both). The fourth group with neither involvement was the control. Scoring system wa

Acute optic neuritis: association with paranasal sinus inflammatory changes on magnetic resonance imaging.

The authors compared the frequency of paranasal sinus inflammatory changes (SIC) on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) obtained from 23 patients with new onset acute optic neuritis (ON) and 48 control patients who underwent outpatient MRI of the brain for reasons other than ON. The authors found a higher frequency of paranasal SIC in patients with ON (83%) than in controls (54%) (p = 0.02). The distribution of paranasal SIC (in ON and in controls) was maxillary (83% and 52%), ethmoid (4% and 2%), frontal (9% and 14%), and sphenoid (4% and 10%). Frequency of the maxillary SIC was significan

[Giant mucocele of the paranasal sinuses with extension to the contralateral posterior cranial fossa and reversible retrocochlear deafness].

Report on a huge mucocele of the right maxillary sinus extending into the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses, and protruding into the contralateral left posterior cranial fossa. The patient, a 45-year old male, had no history of paranasal sinus energy, nasal or paranasal symptoms. He went to his physician because of a slowly developing deafness in his left ear and because of episodes of loss of consciousness when blowing his nose. A reversible episode of vertigo and reversible paresis of the left abducent nerve 17 years previously, were later assumed to have been the first symptoms of endocranial ex

Molecular analysis of dominant paranasal sinus bacteria in patients with and without chronic rhinosinusitis.

Recent studies have established the possible role of microbiota in developing various diseases. In this regard, attention has shifted to the evaluation of microbiota changes in the paranasal sinuses and its relationship to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), especially CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). This study aimed to examine the bacterial communities of the sphenoidal sinus in Iranian patients with and without CRS. The investigation included 36 subjects, including 18 patients with CRSwNP who underwent Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) and 18 non-CRS patients who underwent Endoscopic E

Imaging of the sellar and parasellar regions.

Although a wide variety of pathologies can occur in the limited anatomic space within and surrounding the sella turcica only a few are common. This review aims to briefly summarize pituitary and parasellar anatomy and provide a focused description of the imaging features of both common and rare pituitary pathologies. Diagnoses of imaging findings with important implications for clinical management are highlighted. MR is the primary diagnostic modality for evaluation of this anatomic region. CT supplements MR in the evaluation of pathologies involving the bony sella turcica while angiography or

Pneumosinus dilatans: is it more than an aesthetic concern?

BACKGROUND: Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a pathologic condition involving the hyperaeration of one or several of the paranasal sinuses that can lead to significant deformation of the overlying bone. Although the presenting complaint of patients with PD is most commonly aesthetic in nature, the condition has also been associated with intracranial tumors and several other serious conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A meta-analysis of all available clinical publications on the subject of PD was conducted. Patients were categorized on the basis of their sinus involvement. Associated conditions wer

[Orbito-cranial reconstruction and unilateral optic canal release in a patient with left fronto-orbital fibrous dysplasia: a case report].

A surgical case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the left frontal and sphenoidal bone in a 14-year-old girl is described. This girl was admitted to our hospital in March, 1992, with a chief complaint of facial deformity and asymmetry due to a painless and progressive bony bulging over the left fronto-orbital region. But she denied any symptoms such as proptosis, diplopia, optic atrophy and visual loss. Other data found on neurological examination and laboratory tests were normal. In addition, she had no history of skin lesions, precocious puberty or other endocrine abnormalities. Plain crani

Nonepithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. A clinicopathologic study. XIV: Chordomas.

Twenty cases of a rare tumor, chordoma involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, or nasopharynx, are reported. Patients most often had localized headache, nasal obstruction, decreased hearing, or symptoms related to cranial nerve involvement, especially diplopia. A mass bulging into the nasopharynx, posterior nasal cavity, or pharynx was found on physical examination in 13 of these 20 patients, and in another 6 patients on radiologic examination. Paralysis of one or more cranial nerves was identified in the majority of patients who had tumors involving the upper nasopharynx. On radiologic

Occult medial orbital wall trapdoor fracture inducing recurrent rhinogenic intraorbital abscess in a pediatric patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In pediatric populations, rhinogenic intraorbital abscess is frequently encountered, typically resulting from the direct extension of acute sinusitis. However, recurrent rhinogenic intraorbital abscess secondary to an occult medial orbital wall trapdoor fracture is extremely rare and often overlooked due to atypical trauma history and subtle imaging features. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old male pediatric patient experienced recurrent nasal congestion and rhinorrhea with redness, swelling, and pain of the left eye. He was first diagnosed with acute sinusitis, yet conventional an

Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma of Nasopharynx and Paranasal Sinuses in Children Diagnosis and Treatment-Review of the Literature and Case Report.

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (aRMS) is a rare pediatric malignant tumor with a poor prognosis, particularly when located in the rhinopharynx and sphenoidal floor, which complicates diagnosis and increases the risk of misclassification as benign growths. The specific genotype of aRMS is associated with a worse clinical outcome. In young children, especially those aged 4 to 12 years, rhinopharyngeal masses are often attributed to chronic adenoiditis; however, other benign (e.g., angiofibroma in boys) and malignant tumors may also be present. Initial symptoms frequently include nasal obstruction, mu

Anteriorly Tilted Coronal CT of Paranasal Sinuses for Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.

Conventional coronal CT scans of paranasal sinuses, aligned perpendicularly to the nasal floor, often deviate significantly from the endoscopic view during sinus surgery. This discrepancy complicates the interpretation of anatomical structures. In response, we propose the utilization of anteriorly tilted coronal CT slices to enhance anatomical understanding. These slices align more closely with the endoscopic view, fostering an intuitive grasp of paranasal sinus anatomy. This study aims to quantify the tilt of the endoscope to the nasal floor during endoscopic sinus surgery. To figure out the

Variable anatomical features of acromegaly in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses: implications for endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery.

PURPOSE: Growth hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) are the most common cause of acromegaly. The endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach (EEA) is commonly employed to remove them. Although morphological differences in the nasal cavity exist between acromegaly patients and those with other types of PitNET, few quantitative studies have been performed. This study aimed to evaluate the anatomical features of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in patients with acromegaly. METHODS: Preoperative computed tomography images of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinu

A case report of racemose pattern of intracranial tuberculoma with brain stem and hypophyseal involvement developing paradoxically during treatment.

Tuberculosis involving the central nervous system, a source of considerable morbidity and mortality, forms 5-10% of the disease burden associated with tuberculosis. Central nervous system tuberculosis may present as meningitis, tuberculoma, abscesses, cerebritis or miliary tuberculosis. The most common site of tuberculoma has been reported to be at the grey-white matter junction and the periventricular region. They may even be found in the epidural, subdural and subarachnoid spaces, and the brain stem, with the rarer sites of involvement being the cavernous sinus, sella turcica, hypophysis, hy
