[Auditory hallucination as an initial sign of frontotemporal dementia].

A 58-year-old right-handed man presented with a 9-year history of stereotyped behaviors and auditory hallucinations. At 49 years of age, he began to complain about auditory hallucinations that said offensive things about him, and around the same time, he began exhibiting stereotyped behaviors. For example, he traveled the same long route from his office to home every evening. Disinhibitory behavior occurred at 53 years of age, and he was forced to retire at 54 years of age. After retirement, the patient stayed in bed or showed a stereotyped behavior of repeatedly going to a nearby shrine every

Super-stereotypy I: enhancement of a complex movement sequence by systemic dopamine D1 agonists.

Peripheral administration of D1 dopamine agonists elicits grooming behavior from rodents. The present study examined grooming behavior and the relative probability and stereotypy of a natural sequence of grooming movements (called a syntactic grooming chain) that follows a predictable fixed pattern of serial order. We compared the amount of grooming behavior vs. the stereotypy of sequential patterns after peripheral administration of either a partial D1 agonist (SKF 38393; 2.5, 5.0, 10, 20 mg/kg), a full D1 agonist (SKF 82958; 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 mg/kg; i.p.), a D2 agonist (quinpirole; 5.0, 10

Effects of gastrodin on the dopamine system of Tourette's syndrome rat models.

Gastrodin is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat Tourette's syndrome (TS). This study evaluated the effects of gastrodin on the dopamine system. TS rat models were established by intraperitoneal injection of apomorphine. After intervention by gastrodin, stereotyped behaviors of TS rats were significantly inhibited and levels of homovanillic acid (HVA) were significantly increased. We conclude that gastrodin effectively inhibited stereotyped behaviors and controlled TS symptoms by promoting dopamine metabolism, thereby increasing levels of HVA in sera.

The Effect of Myth Education on Responses to Disclosures of Sexual Assault.

Sexual assault victims most often disclose informally to friends or family, whose responses may be shaped by rape myths. While education has been used to improve attitudes towards sexual assault (e.g., among police), its impact on informal disclosure recipients remains underexplored. In Study 1, participants completed one of three educational modules: rape myths, myths with injunctive guidance to support victims, or a control. Although rape myth endorsement decreased, participants still evaluated a non-stereotypical assault scenario more negatively than a stereotypical one. Exploratory analyse

Functional and anatomical specificity in a higher olfactory centre.

Most sensory systems are organized into parallel neuronal pathways that process distinct aspects of incoming stimuli. In the insect olfactory system, second order projection neurons target both the mushroom body, required for learning, and the lateral horn (LH), proposed to mediate innate olfactory behavior. Mushroom body neurons form a sparse olfactory population code, which is not stereotyped across animals. In contrast, odor coding in the LH remains poorly understood. We combine genetic driver lines, anatomical and functional criteria to show that the Drosophila LH has ~1400 neurons and >16

Captive coyotes compared to their counterparts in the wild: does environmental enrichment help?

This article attempts to determine the effects of environment (captive or wild) and a simple form of environmental enrichment on the behavior and physiology of a nonhuman animal. Specifically, analyses first compared behavioral budgets and stereotypic behavior of captive coyotes (Canis latrans) in kennels and pens to their counterparts in the wild. Second, experiments examined the effect of a simple form of environmental enrichment for captive coyotes (food-filled bones) on behavioral budgets, stereotypies, and corticosteroid levels. Overall, behavioral budgets of captive coyotes in both kenne

Acute cocaine effects in paradoxical sleep deprived male rats.

Cocaine is a psychomotor drug known to cause behavioural alterations. This study was conducted to characterize behavioural response to acute cocaine injection (7 mg/kg, ip) in paradoxical sleep deprived (PSD) male rats since sleep deprivation is also associated with several behavioural alterations. Cocaine or vehicle was administered to rats at the end of a 4-day period of sleep deprivation, and in home-cage control animals. Cocaine administration in control and PSD rats induced a significant increase in stereotyped behaviour in relation to saline-injected rats. PSD induced significant but het

Participation of a preschooler with visual impairments on the playground: effects of musical adaptations and staff development.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adaptations of a playground, and subsequently staff development, on the participation of a 3-year-old boy with congenital blindness. A single-subject design with three conditions (baseline, adaptations of the playground, and staff development) was used. The playground adaptation involved adding musical stations in strategic locations on the playground and connecting them with a "path" that provided auditory feedback. The staff training involved the music therapist providing individualized instruction to the staff who supervised the child. The child

Stereotypy and spontaneous alternation in deer mice and its response to anti-adenosinergic intervention.

Repetitive behavioral phenotypes are a trait of several neuropsychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Such behaviors are typified by complex interactions between cognitive and neurobiological processes which most likely contribute to the suboptimal treatment responses often observed. To this end, exploration of the adenosinergic system may be useful, since adenosine-receptor modulation has previously shown promise to restore control over voluntary behavior and improve cognition in patients presenting with motor repetition. Here, we employed the deer mouse (Peromysc

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor mimicking malignant meningioma in the middle cranial fossa: a case report.

UNLABELLED: The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has drawn attention to the lack of progress toward racial equity in many domains. Chief among them is the unequal treatment that Black men often face when interacting with law enforcement or within the criminal justice system, which appears heavily associated with the pernicious stereotype that Black men are distinctly aggressive and dangerous. Evidence suggests that Hispanic men are also subject to similar negative stereotypes. We contend that the consequences of this intersectional stereotype are wide-ranging and explore how it manifests and

Wheel-running in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease: protection or symptom?

Several studies on both humans and animals reveal benefits of physical exercise on brain function and health. A previous study on TgCRND8 mice, a transgenic model of Alzheimer's disease, reported beneficial effects of premorbid onset of long-term access to a running wheel on spatial learning and plaque deposition. Our study investigated the effects of access to a running wheel after the onset of Abeta pathology on behavioural, endocrinological, and neuropathological parameters. From day 80 of age, the time when Abeta deposition becomes apparent, TgCRND8 and wildtype mice were kept with or with

NMDA antagonists block expression of sensitization of amphetamine- and apomorphine-induced stereotypy.

We have been studying sensitization of psychostimulant-induced stereotyped behavior in mice using both single and multiple pretreatment paradigms. In the present study, we tested whether NMDA receptor antagonists and an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis inhibit expression of sensitization in either of these models. Male CF-1 mice were pretreated with a single dose or with three daily doses of amphetamine (14 mg/kg) or apomorphine (40 mg/kg). Two days following these pretreatments, mice were injected with ((+/-)3-(2-carboxypiperazine-4yl)-propyl-1-phosphonic acid (CPP, 20 mg/kg), dizocilpine

[Characteristics of the rat behavior following single and multiple exposures of the hypoglycemic insulin doses].

Rats behaviour in the "open field" changed in 2 hrs after a single episode of hypoglycaemia was abolished with glucose whereas no changes occurred in their stereotyped behaviour and intraspecies interaction. In 24 hrs quantitative parameters of the "open field" behaviour normalised although the behaviour still had an altered structure. At the same time, amphetamine-induced stereotyped behaviour's indices became reduced. These and other findings suggest some deeper behavioural changes in rats during their recovery from repeated hypoglycaemic episodes and absence of synchronisation of the insuli

Oxytocin and serotonin in the modulation of neural function: Neurobiological underpinnings of autism-related behavior.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a group of generalized neurodevelopmental disorders. Its main clinical features are social communication disorder and repetitive stereotyped behavioral interest. The abnormal structure and function of brain network is the basis of social dysfunction and stereotyped performance in patients with autism spectrum disorder. The number of patients diagnosed with ASD has increased year by year, but there is a lack of effective intervention and treatment. Oxytocin has been revealed to effectively improve social cognitive function and significantly improve the social

Protective effects of cholecystokinin-8 on methamphetamine-induced behavioral changes and dopaminergic neurodegeneration in mice.

We investigated whether pretreatment with the neuropeptide cholecystokinin-8 affected methamphetamine (METH)-induced behavioral changes and dopaminergic neurodegeneration in male C57/BL6 mice. CCK-8 pretreatment alone had no effect on locomotion and stereotypic behavior and could not induce behavioral sensitization; however, it attenuated, in a dose-dependent manner, hyperlocomotion and behavioral sensitization induced by a low dose of METH (1mg/kg). CCK-8 attenuated METH-induced stereotypic behavior at a dose of 3mg/kg but not at 10mg/kg. CCK-8 pretreatment attenuated METH (10mg/kg)-induced h

An evaluation of ethological criteria and methods in the assessment of well-being in sows.

The literature on behaviour of sows under different management systems was reviewed to evaluate ethological criteria and methods in the assessment of wellbeing. Daily activity time seems of little value in the assessment of wellbeing when housing systems are compared. It is low in confined sows, especially those that are tethered or otherwise restricted. Lack of exercise, however, has well-documented adverse effects in tethered and restricted sows. A number of well-known responses to conflicts and frustration have been observed in confined sows, but the effect of tethering and restriction vari

Roma Women's Role in the Health Preservation of Their Communities during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The scientific literature has evidenced the stereotypes that affect the Roma people, which are detrimental to their access to the health systems in various countries. With the COVID-19 pandemic, this situation has been aggravated by falsely blaming, on many occasions, the Roma people as spreaders of the virus for supposedly not complying with the norms established by the health authorities. However, it has not been explored in depth what actions have been carried out by the Roma people during the pandemic to cope with this aspect. The aim of this article is to learn about the leadership of Rom

A field experiment: reducing interpersonal discrimination toward pregnant job applicants.

The current research targets 4 potential stereotypes driving hostile attitudes and discriminatory behaviors toward pregnant women: incompetence, lack of commitment, inflexibility, and need for accommodation. We tested the relative efficacy of reducing concerns related to each of the stereotypes in a field experiment in which female confederates who sometimes wore pregnancy prostheses applied for jobs in a retail setting. As expected, ratings from 3 perspectives (applicants, observers, and independent coders) converged to show that pregnant applicants received more interpersonal hostility than

[Factor structure of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R): a study of dimensional versus categorical classification of autistic disorders].

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether empirically derived dimensions of autistic behavior are consistent with the content-valid construction of the autistic behavior domains according to ICD-10 and DSM-IV (social interaction, communication and repetitive, stereotyped behavior). METHODS: A principal component exploratory factor analysis routine with varimax-rotation and extraction of factors following the Scree criterion was run using data from the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) of N = 262 individuals exhibiting autism or autistic features. RESULTS: A three-factor solution

Understanding equine stereotypies.

It is frequently asserted that equine stereotypies, such as crib-biting, wind-sucking and weaving, are caused by boredom. However, this explanation is too general to be of practical use in discerning the causes of each stereotypy or in devising management practices to prevent their occurrence. The majority of equine stereotypes start within one month of weaning when both the nutritional and social environment of the foal are substantially altered. Epidemiological research has revealed that the provision of low quantities of forage and minimal opportunities for social contact are associated wit
