Surgical design and efficacy for restrictive strabismus due to thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with restrictive strabismus caused by thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) often experience diplopia and restricted eye movements, which significantly affect patient's daily life and work. For such strabismus cases, extraocular muscle surgery is commonly performed once the primary condition stabilizes. This study aims to compare and analyze the effectiveness of 3 rectus muscle weakening procedures on the affected extraocular muscles in TAO-induced restrictive strabismus, and to summarize surgical experiences. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 50 patien…

Dose-Effect Relationship of Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Management of Strabismus: A Review.

Botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) is a well-accepted non-surgical therapy for strabismus. However, its dose and technique vary widely. We reviewed published evidence on the dose effect of BTXA in treating various types of strabismus. Articles on BTXA therapy outcomes were reviewed to study doses and brands of BTXA used and their efficacy for specific types of strabismus. Researchers indicated that greater dosages may be used safely without increasing the risk of complications. The review suggested a positive dose-response relationship of BTX to success but with a higher risk of complications. No s…

A Lifetime of Double Vision: A Case Report and Literature Review of Chronic Strabismus.

Strabismus is a condition preventing foveal alignment in normal gaze. Its effects can have long-standing impacts on physical, psychological, and social health. Multiple treatment options exist for strabismus such as surgery, optical correction, and vision therapy, however, treatment efficacy remains variable with little consensus on long-term impacts. Diplopia is a common side effect of the ocular misalignment secondary to strabismus and its treatment. When defining long-term success of treating strabismus, it is essential that visual sensory perception and binocular fusion has been integrated…

Removal of a Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant and Fibrous Adhesion for Refractory Mechanical Strabismus.

Although strabismus is a well-known complication of glaucoma implant surgery, its surgical treatment is still challenging. We present a case with refractory strabismus after Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) surgery, which was not sufficiently improved by strabismus surgery, but by removal of the BGI and fibrous adhesion. The patient was a 35-year-old woman who had multiple surgeries for secondary glaucoma. She had severe limitations of the movement of her right eye and binocular diplopia in all gaze positions after BGI surgery. Although she underwent two strabismus surgeries, the strabismus wa…
