HIV and Substance Use Disorders.

Over 1.2 million Americans aged 13 years and older have been diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). While HIV incidence has been declining since 2017, the risk of HIV acquisition and transmission persists among persons who use drugs via injection drug use and unprotected sexual intercourse associated with substance use. Untreated substance use disorder (SUD) is associated with poor adherence to HIV antiretroviral therapy, poor HIV outcomes, and increased risk for HIV acquisition. Herein, we describe the intertwined syndemic of HIV and SUD, as well as treatment strategies and eviden

Interventions to reduce harms related to drug use among people who experience incarceration: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mortality, suicide, self-harm, and substance use are elevated among people who are incarcerated. There is a wide range of heterogeneous interventions aimed at reducing these harms in this population. Previous reviews have focused on specific interventions or limited their findings to drug use and recidivism and have not explored interventions delivered after release from prison. Our aim is to examine the effect of interventions delivered to people who use drugs during incarceration or after release from incarceration, on a wide range of outcomes. METHODS: In this systematic review

Overdose prevention centres as spaces of safety, trust and inclusion: A causal pathway based on a realist review.

ISSUES: Overdose prevention centres (OPC) are non-residential spaces where people can use illicit drugs (that they have obtained elsewhere) in the presence of staff who can intervene to prevent and manage any overdoses that occur. Many reviews of OPCs exist but they do not explain how OPCs work. APPROACH: We carried out a realist review, using the RAMESES reporting standards. We systematically searched for and then thematically analysed 391 documents that provide information on the contexts, mechanisms and outcomes of OPCs. KEY FINDINGS: Our retroductive analysis identified a causal pathway

Clinical Presentations of Bupropion Prescription Drug Misuse: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Among prescribers, bupropion is considered a substance of low misuse potential, with some studies showing lesser misuse potential than caffeine. However, several case reports exist of recreational bupropion misuse and diversion. Our goal is to understand at-risk populations, clinical courses, interventions, and outcomes after acute ingestion of bupropion via oral, intravenous route, and insufflation. METHODS: The systematic review was registered with PROSPERO on August 5, 2023. We conducted a systematic literature search on July 30, 2023, utilizing 8 databases with the help of the

Cannabis use frequency and pain interference among people with HIV.

Cannabis is often used by people with HIV (PWH) for pain, yet study results are inconsistent regarding whether and how it affects pain. This study examines whether greater cannabis use frequency is associated with lower pain interference and whether cannabis use modifies the association of pain severity and pain interference among 134 PWH with substance dependence or a lifetime history of injection drug use. Multi-variable linear regression models examined the association between past 30-day cannabis use frequency and pain interference. Additional models evaluated whether cannabis use modified

SI-CBPAR: Towards structural indicators of community-based participatory action research.

INTRODUCTION: Structural aspects of community-engaged research are not well measured yet have critical implications for community research empowerment. This is particularly so with people who use drugs. We introduce the Structural Indicators of Community-Based Participatory Action Research (SI-CBPAR) to measure structural indicators of community-research entity relationships. METHODS: A three-phased process of iterative development, feasibility and applicability assessment was used to examine the instrument with community-engaged studies as a first stage of instrument development. The impact of pseudoephedrine regulation at Australian pharmacies through Project Stop: A narrative review.

ISSUES: Project Stop, a real-time monitoring program for pseudoephedrine-containing medicines, was initiated in 2005 by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia in collaboration with police in the state of Queensland. The program implemented an online database to record pseudoephedrine purchases (and attempted purchases) to prevent large-scale diversion to methamphetamine production. APPROACH: This narrative review aims to understand the overall impact of Project Stop, what evidence exists for this kind of intervention in Australia, and what lessons can be learned from its introduction. Systematic dat

Current approaches for the treatment of ketamine-induced cystitis.

AIMS: Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic, historically used in a clinical setting for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Ketamine usage can produce undesirable psychological manifestations including hallucinations and long-term psychotomimetic effects. As a results of its fast onset and short period of action, ketamine is widely used as a recreational drug. Chronic abuse of ketamine can lead to significant urinary system complications including ketamine-induced cystitis (KIC). Common side effects of chronic ketamine abuse are urinary pain and discomfort and decreased bladder compl

Opportunities for intervention for alcohol and other drug use problems for men before prison: A qualitative study.

Research into opportunities for prevention including health promotion information about alcohol and other drugs (AoD) harms for people who go to prison is sparce. This is despite there being ample research reporting how much and how frequently AoD have been used by people who go to prison. This article describes results from a qualitative thematic analysis of interviews with 31 men in a Sydney prison, about where they first received health promotion information about AoD-related harms and their first-ever treatment episode. No participant reported receiving education on AoD harms or treatment

Termination From Substance Use Disorder Treatment in the United States: Residential and Outpatient Settings.

OBJECTIVE: As rates of noncompletion in substance use treatment remain high and consequences of noncompletion can be severe, research regarding individual and environmental factors associated with specific types of discharge is crucial. The current study used data from the Treatment Episodes Dataset-Discharge (TEDS-D) 2015-2017 in the United States to investigate the impact of social determinants of health on discharge from treatment due to termination by the treatment facility in both outpatient/intensive outpatient and residential treatment settings. METHOD: A multinomial logistic regressio

Resting-state EEG, Substance use and Abstinence After Chronic use: A Systematic Review.

Resting-state EEG reflects intrinsic brain activity and its alteration represents changes in cognition that are related to neuropathology. Thereby, it provides a way of revealing the neurocognitive mechanisms underpinning chronic substance use. In addition, it is documented that some neurocognitive functions can recover following sustained abstinence. We present a systematic review to synthesize how chronic substance use is associated with resting-state EEG alterations and whether these spontaneously recover from abstinence. A literature search in Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Scie

Vaccines as a preventive tool for substance use disorder: A systematic review including a meta-analysis on nicotine vaccines' immunogenicity.

The research on substance use disorders is ongoing in the quest to find anti-addiction vaccines to treat drug abuse. This article provides a systematic review of clinical trials that have been conducted on humans to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and abstinence rates of anti-addiction vaccines for different drugs, with useful results regarding cocaine and nicotine vaccines in particular; this study includes also a meta-analysis to establish the antibody-titer production following the nicotine vaccination, while a meta-analysis of cocaine vaccines was not performed due to the small number of in

Exploring resting frontal EEG and reflective functioning in maternal substance use.

Maternal substance use is associated with altered neural activity and poor offspring outcomes, which may be facilitated by suboptimal caregiving in the form of impaired parental reflective functioning (PRF). To investigate these associations, the resting-state frontal electroencephalography (EEG) power of 48 substance-using mothers and 37 non-substance-using mothers were examined, specifying seven frequency bands: delta, theta, alpha, alpha1, alpha2, beta, and gamma. Substance-using mothers exhibited enhanced beta and gamma spectral power compared to non-substance-using mothers, potentially re

Global research on syndemics: a meta-knowledge analysis (2001-2020).

BACKGROUND: Syndemics or synergies of cooccurring epidemics are widely studied across health and social sciences in recent years. METHODS: We conducted a meta-knowledge analysis of articles published between 2001 to 2020 in this growing field of academic scholarship. RESULTS: We found a total of 830 articles authored by 3025 authors, mostly from high-income countries. Publications on syndemics are gradually increasing since 2003, with rapid development in 2013. Each article was cited more than 15 times on average, and most (n = 604) articles were original studies. Syndemics research focused

The relations between discrimination, stressful life events, and substance use among adults experiencing homelessness.

The current study investigated whether stressful life events and everyday discrimination experiences were associated with using one or more substances in the past 30-days and substance use disorder (SUD) among adults experiencing homelessness. We obtained survey data from adults (N = 501) seeking services at a day shelter. Participants self-reported whether they used cigarettes, other tobacco products, cannabis, alcohol, opioids, amphetamine, and cocaine/crack in the past 30-days, and the total number of substances used were also calculated. We measured stressful life events and everyday discr
