BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial hypotension-arising from CSF leaks that are iatrogenic, traumatic, or spontaneous-is a potentially debilitating condition resulting in orthostatic headaches and other neurologic symptoms. While pediatric CSF leaks are challenging to manage due to limited data, digital subtraction myelography (DSM) has shown promise as a highly sensitive diagnostic tool for visualizing these leaks. This study reviews the use of DSM in pediatric patients for diagnosing and localizing CSF leaks at a quaternary center for intracranial hypotension.

Using a subtractive hybridization approach, differentially expressed genes involved in the light response in saffron stigmas were identified. Twenty-two differentially expressed transcript-derived fragments were cloned and sequenced. Two of them were highly induced by light and had sequence similarity to early inducible proteins (ELIP) and SOUL heme-binding proteins. Subspace-based face representation can be looked as a regression problem. From this viewpoint, we first revisited the problem of recognizing faces across pose differences, which is a bottleneck in face recognition. We propose a new technique for fusing multiple cues to robustly segment an object from its background in video sequences that suffer from abrupt changes of both illumination and position of the target. Mammogram registration is an important technique to optimize the display of cases on a digital viewing station, and to find corresponding regions in temporal pairs of mammograms for computer-aided diagnosis algorithms. BACKGROUND: Chronic cerebral vasospasm is delayed-onset cerebral arterial narrowing in response to blood clots left in the subarachnoid space after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). Among the 107 eyes, the sites of obstruction were in the common canaliculus in 9 eyes, above the neck of the lacrimal sac in 12 eyes and under the neck of the lacrimal sac in 86 eyes. Nineteen patients with 20 clinically occult arterial injuries were prospectively followed without surgery in order to define the natural history of these lesions. The patients were predominantly male (74%), with a mean age of 31 years. The mechanism of injury was penetrating in 13 cases and blunt in seven cases. The arterial injuries were located in the lower extremity (45%), upper extremity (35%), neck (15%), and abdominal aorta (5%). The quality of intravenous digital subtraction angiograms was sufficient for diagnostic evaluation in 90%. The accuracy of the method was 90% for the internal carotid artery. 40% of the internal carotid arteries showed stenoses, whereas the common and external carotid arteries were not narrowed in 90%. On behalf of these data the authors consider that i.v. DSA of the carotid vessels is a suitable screening method for carotid arterial occlusive disease.

Intravenous DSA of the breast is a new, hardly invasive, method for demonstrating carcinomas of the breast and for differentiating these from benign lesions. Carcinomas show distinct tumour-staining during the capillary phase, although the criteria which are used on conventional angiography are not recognisable. Semi-malignant tumours show feeble staining. Benign diseases such as fibro-adenomas and focal sclerosing adenosis are not demonstrated by I-V DSA. Aneurysms of the coronary arteries may cause angina, myocardial infarction or sudden death due to thrombosis, embolization or rupture. The patient described herein may represent the first reported case of a large coronary artery aneurysm compressing the upper caval vein, and thereby producing a significant inflow gradient. The anatomical details were demonstrated by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The patient successfully underwent resection of the aneurysm and reconstruction of the coronary artery with a saphenous vein bypass graft.
