In 1985, a new syndrome with the following characteristics was described: thrombopathia, thrombopenia, asplenia, miosis, headache, ichthyosis, dyslexia, muscle defect, and subsequently also hypocalcaemia. Skin and deep bleedings, leg spasms, disturbed dark vision and dyslexia are main worries. This paper describes these patients with a review of the investigations performed. Causes of the bleeding tendency are complex disturbances of the platelet membrane causing insufficient stability of the haemostatic plug, the nature of which is unresolved, but involves membrane scrambling. The muscle defe…

In 1969, Robinow and colleagues described a syndrome of mesomelic shortening, hemivertebrae, genital hypoplasia, and "fetal facies". Over 100 cases have now been reported and we have reviewed the current knowledge of the clinical and genetic features of the syndrome. The gene for the autosomal recessive form was identified as the ROR2 gene on chromosome 9q22. ROR2 is a receptor tyrosine kinase with orthologues in mouse and other species. The same gene, ROR2, has been shown to cause autosomal dominant brachydactyly B, but it is not known at present whether the autosomal dominant form of Robinow…

The Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is defined as the repeated occurrence of psychic disability accompanied by physical symptoms such as weight-gain, mastodynia and edema during the luteal phase. Irritability, depressive mood, lack of concentration and anxiety are the dominant psychiatric features. These symptoms culminate during the premenstrual period and disappear at the onset of menstrual bleeding. The symptomatology is of variable degree. About 2 to 3% of all women of reproductive age are severely impaired by these symptoms. The etiology of PMS is unknown. Disturbance of serotonin metabolism …

A 12-year-old male was admitted with postaxial polydactyly on the right hand, congenital heart disease, vertebral anomaly, and facial asymmetry. Investigations confirmed the diagnosis of a congenital disease, Goldenhar's syndrome, with the rare associations of polydactyly and probable autosomal dominant inheritance.

CREST syndrome has been described as a form of progressive systemic sclerosis in which there is relatively limited involvement of the skin, prominence of calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysfunction and telangiectasia. The acronym CREST was coined in 1964 by Winterbauer in the USA but the very first case report was by French physicians Thibierge and Weissenbach in 1910. Antinuclear antibodies recognizing chromosomal centromere proteins are characteristic of CREST syndrome and are present in more than 50% of the cases. The prognosis of CREST syndrome is relatively good with a long l…

Olmsted syndrome is an uncommon inherited disorder of keratinization that presents mutilating palmoplantar keratoderma, perioral hyperkeratosis, leukokeratosis and alopecia. We report a case of this rare syndrome diagnosed in a 48-year-old woman and confirms the existence of a generalized abnormality in keratin expression. Immunoreactivity in our case suggests an abnormal expression of keratins 5 and 14 similar to the observed in other hyperproliferative disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Triple A syndrome is an autosomal recessive disease causing achalasia, alacrima and adrenal involvement with isolated glucocorticoid deficiency. Less than 70 cases have been reported worldwide. We report a case of familial adrenal insufficiency with hyperpigmentation diagnosed in a 14 month-old child.
CASE REPORT: A 2 year-old boy, a product of consanguineous parents, was referred to our institution for evaluation of melanoderma. Since birth the boy had suffered from vomiting and diarrhea. Aged 6 months, mucosal erosive lesions had appeared associated with fever and further comp…
