COVID-19 Vaccine Reactogenicity and Vaccine Attitudes Among Children and Parents/Guardians After Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children or COVID-19 Hospitalization: September 2021-May 2022.

BACKGROUND: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a multiorgan hyperinflammatory condition following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Data on COVID-19 vaccine adverse events and vaccine attitudes in children with prior MIS-C are limited. We described characteristics associated with COVID-19 vaccination, vaccine adverse events and vaccine attitudes in children with a history of MIS-C or COVID-19 and their parents/guardians. METHODS: We enrolled children previously hospitalized for MIS-C or COVID-19 from 3 academic institutions. We abstracted charts and interviewed children and parents/

Favourable outcomes of conservatively managed acute abdomen associated with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUNDS: Abdominal pain is one of the most common symptoms of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Abdominal pain can vary from mild to severe and may present as acute abdomen. Severe abdominal pain in patients with MIS-C should be differentiated from surgical causes of acute abdomen to prevent unnecessary surgery. METHODS: The diagnosis of MIS-C was based on WHO and CDC recommended criteria. Records of children treated for MIS-C between September 2020 and January 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: In a short time, we encountered seven patients who were diagno

Severe COVID-19 Shares a Common Neutrophil Activation Signature with Other Acute Inflammatory States.

Severe COVID-19 patients present a clinical and laboratory overlap with other hyperinflammatory conditions such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). However, the underlying mechanisms of these conditions remain to be explored. Here, we investigated the transcriptome of 1596 individuals, including patients with COVID-19 in comparison to healthy controls, other acute inflammatory states (HLH, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children [MIS-C], Kawasaki disease [KD]), and different respiratory infections (seasonal coronavirus, influenza, bacterial pneumonia). We observed that COVID-19

Comparison of clinical and laboratory features in coronavirus disease 2019 and pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome patients.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (PIMS) are a major public health issue affecting many people worldwide. Although there are new studies in children, little is known about these two new conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the clinical and laboratory features of children with COVID-19 and PIMS. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, single-center study of pediatric COVID-19 and PIMS at a tertiary care hospital in Turkey between November 2020 and March 2021. RESULTS: A total of 115 patients with COVID-19

Mortality and clinical characteristics of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with covid-19 in critically ill patients: an observational multicenter study (MISCO study).

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation and severity of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children associated with COVID-19 (MIS-C) is widespread and presents a very low mortality rate in high-income countries. This research describes the clinical characteristics of MIS-C in critically ill children in middle-income countries and the factors associated with the rate of mortality and patients with critical outcomes. METHODS: An observational cohort study was conducted in 14 pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in Colombia between April 01, 2020, and January 31, 2021. Patient age ranged betwe

Can PIMS-TS lead to a facial nerve palsy?

Paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome-temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) is a recently described syndrome. We describe the case of a 17-year-old man presenting with a recent illness consistent with COVID-19 who presented with fever, chest pain and anterior uveitis. He was treated with aspirin, pulsed methylprednisolone and tocilizumab followed by oral steroids. On day 16 from initial presentation, he developed a facial nerve palsy. He was managed with ongoing steroids and the addition of valaciclovir. PIMS-TS is an under-recognised condition among adult physicians and may n

Inflammatory and infectious complications of laser therapy in treatment of hypertrophic burn scars: Correlations in literature review & case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertrophic burn scars contribute to morbidity through secondary symptoms of pain, pruritus, and scar contracture. Traditiona … ctious complications were noted yielding an incidence of 2.3%. Cases included 3 each of cellulitis, Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), and complicated SIRS. CONCLUSION: We found the most common inflammatory complication was SIRS with MSSA positive wound cultures. Three cases underwent hospitalization along with fluids and vasopressors, despite negative blood cultures. In l …

Kawasaki-like multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in an adult.

Kawasaki-like hyperinflammatory syndrome has been widely described as a manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection in paediatric patients. We report a compatible presentation and suggest that physicians consider the potential for this multisystem inflammatory syndrome to occur in adults. A 23-year-old man presented to hospital with a 4-day history of vomiting, diarrhoea, dry cough, fever and a blanching erythematous rash on hands, feet and buttocks. He was otherwise fit and healthy. On day 3 of admission, marked bilateral conjunctivitis developed and high sensitivity troponin I increased significan

Histopathology of the fetal inflammatory response to intra-amniotic pathogens.

Obstetric endorsement of the utility of placental histologic examination remains infrequent, especially from obstetricians who do not have a placental pathologist as part of their own local clinical care team. Placental pathologic examinations are viewed as useless if they do not provide answers to urgent clinical questions. Increasingly, however, it is appreciated that while placental analysis should be considered with regard to its longer term value; results can assess lifelong risks of a wide range of diseases that have been tied to prenatal exposures (e.g., [1]), including distinguishing s

Seizures, Systemic Inflammatory Response, and Rhabdomyolysis Associated With Laboratory-Confirmed 2C-I and 25-I Exposure.

The 2C drugs are hallucinogenic phenethylamines. They and their n-benzyloxymethyl analogs have become popular as "legal highs," and significant toxicity has been attributed to their use. We report on a case of seizures, systemic inflammatory response, and rhabdomyolysis associated with laboratory-confirmed 4-iodo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine and 4-iodo-2,5-dimethoxy-N-(2-methoxybenzyl) phenethylamine exposure. A 17-year-old male teenager developed seizures after taking "2 strips of acid." The seizures resolved with midazolam, but he became apneic and was intubated. His head computed tomography

Serum canine pancreatic-specific lipase concentrations in dogs with naturally occurring Babesia rossi infection.

Babesia rossi is the cause of a highly virulent multisystemic disease with a variable outcome, which is a reliable model of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of canine pancreatic-specific lipase (cPL) in a population of dogs with naturally acquired B. rossi infection. In addition, the associations between serum cPL and death and SIRS status were examined. An observational study recruited 87 dogs diagnosed with B. rossi infection and serum cPL concentrations were measured daily until discharge or death. The median conc…

[Leg discoloration].

Many patients present with discolouration of the legs or with non-ulcerating skin lesions, the most frequent causes being chronic venous insufficiency or other chronic or acute states of congestion. Erysipelas (cellulitis) is also a frequent example of a bacterial skin infection. A complex differential diagnosis arises from all types of immune-mediated skin lesions, opening up the broad spectrum of inflammatory systemic disease, such as vasculitis and sarcoidosis. Livedo like lesions and skin involvement in borreliosis are challenging to classify but of considerable clinical importance. The pr

N-acetylcysteine for sepsis and systemic inflammatory response in adults.

BACKGROUND: Death is common in systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or sepsis-induced multisystem organ failure and it has been thought that antioxidants such as N-acetylcysteine could be beneficial. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the clinical effectiveness of intravenous N-acetylcysteine for the treatment of patients with SIRS or sepsis. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following databases: Cochrane Central Register of Clinical Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2011, Issue 12); MEDLINE (January 1950 to January 2012); EMBASE (January 1980 to January 2012); CINAHL (1982 to January 2012…

Coagulation changes in a siamese twin in SIRS after death of the other twin: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Conjoined twins represent a rare case of embryonic failure. Siamese twins' final outcome is usually associated with poor prognos … ation functions and processes, which we believed were caused by the death of twin II, as well as by systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). CONCLUSIONS: Due to vascular conjunction between the twins' brains' circulatory systems the sequenced progress of coagulopathy was noticed in the surviving twin.
