Effects of motor activity versus cognitive demand on asymmetries in EEG frequency bands and their relation to handedness.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG) is commonly used in neuroscience to study cognitive and emotional processes, often showing functional lateralization. Alpha asymmetries are frequently interpreted as a reverse marker of functional asymmetries in cognitive activation. However, the role of motor activity versus cognitive demands in driving EEG asymmetries remains unclear. METHODS: To explore this, we analyzed resting-state and task-based EEG asymmetry from 610 healthy adults (ages 20-70) from the Dortmund Vital Study (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05155397). Participants completed three tasks

Altered lower extremity biomechanics following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction during single-leg and double-leg stop-jump tasks: A bilateral total support moment analysis.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can lead to long-lasting biomechanical alterations that put individuals at risk of a second ACL injury. Examining the total support moment may reveal between- and within-limb compensatory strategies. METHODS: Twenty-six participants who were cleared to return to sport following ACL reconstruction were recruited. Each participant completed the single-leg and double-leg stop jump tasks. These tasks were analyzed using force plates and a 3D motion analysis system. The total support moment was calculated by summing the internal moments of

Frontoparietal representations of task context support the flexible control of goal-directed cognition.

Cognitive control allows stimulus-response processing to be aligned with internal goals and is thus central to intelligent, purposeful behavior. Control is thought to depend in part on the active representation of task information in prefrontal cortex (PFC), which provides a source of contextual bias on perception, decision making, and action. In the present study, we investigated the organization, influences, and consequences of context representation as human subjects performed a cued sorting task that required them to flexibly judge the relationship between pairs of multivalent stimuli. Optical imaging of visually guided reaching in macaque posterior parietal cortex.

Sensorimotor transformation for reaching movements in primates requires a large network of visual, parietal, and frontal cortical areas. We performed intrinsic optical imaging over posterior parietal cortex including areas 7a and the dorsal perilunate in macaque monkeys during visually guided hand movements. Reaching was performed while foveating one of nine static reach targets; thus eye-position-varied concurrently with reach position. The hemodynamic reflectance signal was analyzed during specific phases of the task including pre-reach, reach, and touch epochs. The eye position maps changed

Modulation of frontal and parietal neuronal activity by visuomotor learning. An ERP analysis of implicit and explicit pursuit tracking tasks.

The present study investigated changes in frontal and parietal activity related to visuomotor learning. Improvement in task performance should be achieved by a transition from feedback control to feedforward control. Event-related potential (ERP) activity related to visual feedback analysis of successful error corrections was expected to decrease at parietal scalp locations. (Pre-) motor activity related to the execution of directional changes should increase and begin earlier. While using a mouse or a joystick for cursor control, subjects performed four different conditions of a pursuit track

Is depression a global brain disorder with topographic dynamic reorganization?

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by a multitude of psychopathological symptoms including affective, cognitive, perceptual, sensorimotor, and social. The neuronal mechanisms underlying such co-occurrence of psychopathological symptoms remain yet unclear. Rather than linking and localizing single psychopathological symptoms to specific regions or networks, this perspective proposes a more global and dynamic topographic approach. We first review recent findings on global brain activity changes during both rest and task states in MDD showing topographic reorganization with a shift

Shifts in information processing level: the speed theory of intelligence revisited.

A hypothesis is proposed here to reconcile the inconsistencies observed in the IQ-P3 latency relation. The hypothesis stems from the observation that task-induced increase in P3 latency correlates positively with IQ scores. It is hypothesised that: (a) there are several parallel information processing pathways of varying complexity which are associated with the generation of P3 waves of varying latencies; (b) with increasing workload, there is a shift in the 'information processing level' through progressive recruitment of more complex polysynaptic pathways with greater processing power and in

Effects of inhaled sympathomimetics on obstructive response to respiratory heat loss.

To investigate the influence of inhaled sympathomimetics on the obstructive response to airway cooling, we had six asymptomatic atopic asthmatics perform eucapnic hyperventilation with frigid air at various levels of ventilation after pretreatment with aerosols of metaproterenol or placebo in a random blind fashion. In control experiments, eucapnic hyperventilation produced a progressive decrease in 1-s forced expiratory volume in a stimulus-response fashion as the level of ventilation rose in successive challenges. Metaproterenol did not produce an all-or-none blockade, but rather a parallel

Effect of heat on firefighters' work performance and physiology.

Wildland firefighters often perform their duties under both hot and mild ambient temperatures. However, the direct impact of different ambient temperatures on firefighters' work performance has not been quantified. This study compared firefighters' work performance and physiology during simulated wildland firefighting work in hot (HOT; 32°C, 43% RH) and temperate (CON; 19°C, 56% RH) conditions. Firefighters (n=38), matched and allocated to either the CON (n=18) or HOT (n=20) condition, performed simulated self-paced wildland fire suppression tasks (e.g., hose rolling/dragging, raking) in firef

Executive functioning in children with developmental dyslexia.

The term "executive function" has been used to describe several higher-order cognitive processes. This study examined the processing speed, shifting, planning, and verbal fluency of a sample of 50 Portuguese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and 50 typically developing children (TDC; chronological-age-matched controls) between 8 and 12 years of age to evaluate the children's executive functioning. Compared to TDC, children with DD revealed significant processing speed, shifting, and verbal fluency deficits. After controlling for differences in the general intellectual ability, signific

Changes in Cortical Activation During Dual-Task Walking in Individuals With and Without Visual Vertigo.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Persons with vestibular disorders are known to have slower gait speed with greater imbalance and veering during dual-task walking than healthy individuals, but the cerebral mechanisms are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine whether individuals with visual vertigo (VV) have different cerebral activation during dual-task walking compared with control subjects. METHODS: Fourteen individuals with VV and 14 healthy controls (CON) were included (mean 39 years old, 85% women). A cross-sectional experimental study consisting of 4 combinations of 2 surfaces (eve

Missed nursing care in newborn units: a cross-sectional direct observational study.

BACKGROUND: Improved hospital care is needed to reduce newborn mortality in low/middle-income countries (LMIC). Nurses are essential to the delivery of safe and effective care, but nurse shortages and high patient workloads may result in missed care. We aimed to examine nursing care delivered to sick newborns and identify missed care using direct observational methods. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using direct-observational methods for 216 newborns admitted in six health facilities in Nairobi, Kenya, was used to determine which tasks were completed. We report the frequency of tasks done a

The impact of COVID-19 on illegitimate tasks across occupations in Sweden: a longitudinal observational study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to major societal changes. Although the pandemic has significantly impacted the way we work, few studies have examined its effects on the prevalence of illegitimate tasks, i.e., tasks that are perceived as either unnecessary or unreasonable. Occupational groups were likely affected differently. This study investigates the prevalence of illegitimate tasks for registered nurses, teachers, IT specialists, and construction workers in pre-pandemic (2018), early-pandemic (2020), late-pandemic (2022), and post-pandemic (2024) periods. METHODS: Data were collecte

[Application and prospects of artificial intelligence from tool empowerment to paradigm reconstruction for whole-course diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases by ultrasound].

The research system and clinical decision-making pathways have been systematically reshaped as the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of ultrasonically has become increasingly mature recently for liver disease imaging. Research focus has shifted at the clinical level from low-dimensional classification and diagnostic tasks to high-dimensional, task-driven intelligent diagnosis and treatment. The underlying algorithms are undergoing a profound transition at the technological level from single-modality to multi-modal collaboration and from isolated feature extraction to spa

Remote endpoints for clinical trials in cystic fibrosis: Report from the U.S. CF foundation remote endpoints task force.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid shift in clinical research to perform virtual visits and remote endpoint assessments, providing a key opportunity to optimize the use of remote endpoints for clinical trials in cystic fibrosis. The use of remote endpoints could allow more diverse participation in clinical trials while minimizing participant burden but must be robustly evaluated to ensure adequate performance and feasibility. In response, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation convened the Remote Endpoint Task Force (Supplemental Table 1), a multidisciplinary group of CF researchers with remot

Working Memory Training in Norwegian Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) Show Minimal Evidence of Near and No Far Transfer Effects.

In children with cerebral palsy (CP), learning disabilities are well documented, and impairments in executive functions, such as attention, inhibition, shifting and working memory, represent significant burdens on patients, their families and the society. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether Cogmed RM working memory training could improve working memory in children with CP and investigate whether increased working memory capacity would generalize to other cognitive functions. Twenty-eight children completed the training and the results were compared to a waitlist control group (n = 32

Beyond the dichotomy between controlled and naturalistic paradigms: modeling psychological constructs in cognitive neuroscience.

Cognitive neuroscience aims to link psychological constructs to brain activity, but this goal depends critically on how such constructs are operationalized. Conventional controlled paradigms define constructs through task contrasts or parametric manipulations, providing interpretability by restricting the range of stimuli, behavioral responses, and task demands. Naturalistic paradigms instead use complex, temporally extended stimuli such as movies, narratives, and music, enabling brain activity to be modeled in relation to continuous, multidimensional features of real-world inputs. With the ri

Effective Motor Skill Learning Induces Inverted-U Load-Dependent Activation in Contralateral Pre-Motor and Supplementary Motor Area.

Motor learning involves complex interactions between the cognitive and sensorimotor systems, which are susceptible to different levels of task load. While the mechanism underlying load-dependent regulations in cognitive functions has been extensively investigated, their influence on downstream execution in motor skill learning remains less understood. The current study extends the understanding of whether and how learning alters the load-dependent activation pattern by a longitudinal functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study in which 30 healthy participants (15 females) engaged in ex

Medial Temporal Lobe Damage Impairs Temporal Integration in Episodic Memory.

Although the role of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and the hippocampus in episodic memory is well established, there is emerging evidence that these regions play a broader role in cognition, specifically in temporal processing. However, despite strong evidence that the hippocampus plays a critical role in sequential processing, the involvement of the MTL in timing per se is poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated whether patients with MTL damage exhibit differential performance on a temporal distance memory task. Critically, we manipulated context shifts, or boundaries, which

A Structure-Function Substrate of Memory for Spatial Configurations in Medial and Lateral Temporal Cortices.

Prior research has shown a role of the medial temporal lobe, particularly the hippocampal-parahippocampal complex, in spatial cognition. Here, we developed a new paradigm, the conformational shift spatial task (CSST), which examines the ability to encode and retrieve spatial relations between unrelated items. This task is short, uses symbolic cues, incorporates two difficulty levels, and can be administered inside the scanner. A cohort of 48 healthy young adults underwent the CSST, together with a set of behavioral measures and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Inter-individual diff
