Late-forming supernumerary teeth: A case series.

The aim of this case series was to illustrate the development of late-forming supernumerary teeth (LFST) and highlight the implications for orthodontic treatment. There are limited studies relating to the aetiology, prevalence and treatment of LFST and the cases presented here demonstrate the management of LFST within a tertiary care centre. Five cases are presented, which show various presentations and chronological ages in the development of LFST. This case series emphasises the significance of maintaining a low threshold for suspecting LFST in patients where supernumerary teeth have previou

Management of nosocomial scabies, an outbreak of occupational disease.

BACKGROUND: The optimal approach to managing institutional scabies outbreaks has yet to be defined. We report on outbreak managements are needed. METHODS: We report on a large outbreak of scabies in three acute care wards in a tertiary university teaching hospital in the Netherlands. RESULTS: The outbreak potentially effected 460 patients and 185 health care workers who had been exposed to the index patient. CONCLUSION: Containment of an outbreak relies on a quick and strict implementation of appropriate infection control measures and should include simultaneous treatment of all infested pe

Retrospective analysis of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol goal attainment and cardiovascular outcomes in coronary heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the association of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goal attainment and continuous LDL‑C levels with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) risk in real-world coronary heart disease (CHD) patients, and to support secondary prevention lipid management. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study enrolled CHD patients at a tertiary hospital (2021-2024) with complete lipid and follow-up data. Baseline LDL‑C was recorded; patients were stratified by guideline-recommended targets based on cardiovascular risk (very high risk: < 1.4 mmol/L; o

Self-monitoring patterns after acute coronary syndrome: behavioural markers for secondary prevention.

BACKGROUND: Sustained engagement is essential for remote monitoring (RM) after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), yet self-monitoring behaviour differs across patients and may influence risk-factor control and clinical outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether previously identified adherence patterns could be reproduced in a larger cohort, whether healthcare worker outreach triggered by missing measurements (Medical Service Centre, MSC) was associated with more sustained adherence, and whether these patterns were associated with differences in secondary-prevention outcomes and clinical events. Long-term incidence and risk factors of atrial fibrillation after percutaneous patent foramen ovale occlusion: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure is an established intervention for secondary prevention of cryptogenic stroke. Increasing evidence indicates that the procedure is associated with a risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF). This study aimed to describe the temporal distribution and clinical factors associated with new-onset AF following percutaneous PFO closure. METHODS: Patients aged ≥16 years undergoing percutaneous PFO closure between 1999 and 2021 at a tertiary care centre were retrospectively included. New-onset AF was identified through systematic review of

Infectious disease outcomes in end-stage renal disease: the influence of dialysis type on patient vulnerability in Hail region.

BACKGROUND: Infections are a major threat to patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving renal replacement therapy. Hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) differ in access type, exposure to healthcare environments, and infection pathways, leading to distinct risks for catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI), peritonitis, hospitalization, and adverse outcomes. Recognizing local patterns is essential for prevention planning and quality improvement. AIM: To compare dialysis-related infection prevalence, microbiological profiles, hospitalization events, and biochemical f

Hospital-acquired Candidozyma auris infections as an emerging threat in Saudi Arabia and Egypt: A narrative review on epidemiology and prevention strategies.

Candidozyma auris (C. auris) is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen increasingly associated in hospital-associated outbreaks, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs), and is classified by the World Health Organization as a critical priority pathogen. Its ability to persist in hospital environments, colonize patients asymptomatically, and exhibit multi-drug resistance to antifungal drugs poses a major challenge to infection prevention and control (IPC). This work is a synthesis of published, hospital-based evidence on nosocomial C. auris infections in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, with impli

Cardiac implantable electronic device trends and infection risk in cardiac sarcoidosis: A 30-year perspective from southern and western Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) can cause arrhythmias and heart failure, often requiring cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). The 2014 Heart Rhythm Society consensus strengthened implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) recommendations in CS, potentially affecting practice patterns. Immunosuppressive therapy, central to CS management, may increase CIED infection risk. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 30-year trends in CIED use in CS and the association between immunosuppression timing and 1-year infection risk. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with CS who

Short cervix and preterm birth in the top end.

BACKGROUND: Reducing rates of preterm birth (PTB) remains a significant challenge. The Northern Territory (NT) records some of the highest rates of PTB in the country, especially in First Nations women. In 2014, a Western Australian (WA) preterm birth prevention initiative involved the implementation of seven key initiatives. One of these was routine mid-trimester cervical length measurement. The initiative successfully reduced PTB rates following its first year of implementation. This was the first successful reduction in PTB, including the earlier gestational ages, across a population.
