Direct Observation of Tunable Magnons in Epitaxial Lithium Aluminum Ferrite Thin Films.

Ferrimagnetic insulators offer a promising route toward low-loss magnonic devices. Here, we report the first direct observation of magnons in high-quality epitaxial lithium aluminum ferrite (LAFO) thin films using inelastic Brillouin light scattering. We observe remarkably sharp magnon resonances with instrument-limited line widths whose frequencies can be tuned by film thickness and applied magnetic field (<300 mT) across a broad 8-28 GHz range. The film thickness dependence confirms that they are discrete standing-wave magnons confined in the direction perpendicular to the film. The field-de

Designing quantum matter in pyrochlore iridates: a perspective on recent thin-film advances.

The pyrochlore iridates RIrOhave emerged as a unique playground for exploring exotic quantum phenomena arising from the intricate interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling, electron correlations, and geometric frustration. While bulk crystals of these materials have revealed a rich landscape of correlated and topological states, recent breakthroughs in epitaxial thin-film synthesis and heterostructure engineering unlocked an entirely new dimension of discovery. This brief Perspective reviews recent advancements highlighting how new tuning knobs such as dimensional confinement, epitaxial strain,

Crystallization in Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Thin Films: Roles of Shear, Confinement, and Homoepitaxy.

Lammelar orientation during crystallization in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) thin films is governed by three competing mechanisms, which we elucidate using pseudo-polyrotaxane nanosheets (PPRNSs) and their end-capped analogues (cPPRNSs) as model fillers. Shear forces during processing favor edge-on lamellae, while confinement at high filler loadings promotes flat-on orientation. PPRNSs introduce a third mechanism-homoepitaxial templating-that directs flat-on crystallization through specific matrix-filler interactions absent in cPPRNSs. Systematic orientation analysis before and after thermal recr

Order-of-magnitude enhancement of airborne acoustic streaming downstream of thin porous media.

Thin layers of porous materials are shown to produce an unexpected order-of-magnitude amplification of bulk-driven acoustic streaming generated by a high-powered airborne transducer, increasing the streaming velocity from 0.12 m/s to 2.5 m/s. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were used to characterise the streaming field produced by a Langevin horn operating at 27 kHz with a range of thin porous layers (various filter papers and a woven Kevlar fabric) placed in front of the source. We explain this effect as enhanced acoustic attenuation within the porous layer, which increases the

Thinning apples with 1-aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid: influence of cultivar, rate and timing.

Crop load management of apple trees is necessary to improve fruit size, quality of apples and reduce biennial bearing. As an alternative to hand thinning, a new commercial thinning compound, 1-aminocyclopropane-carboxylic acid (ACC), has been in development for over a decade. A series of eight experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of 1-aminocyclopropane- carboxylic acid (ACC) as a full bloom (FB) or post-bloom thinner for Ambrosia, Gala, Honeycrisp, and Crimson Crisp apple trees. Trees were treated with ACC at rates from 200-400 mg.L-1; different timings from FB to 20 mm; single,

Analysis of Bacterial-Mediated c-di-AMP Degradation by Thin-Layer Chromatography.

Cyclic di-AMP is a bacterial second messenger nucleotide required for the regulation of numerous cellular functions, including potassium and osmolyte homeostasis, DNA repair, cell wall integrity, central metabolism, and stress adaptation. This second messenger is synthesized from two ATP molecules by diadenylate cyclases (DAC) and degraded by cytoplasmic and surface-associated phosphodiesterases (PDE) to phosphoadenylyl adenosine (5' pApA), adenosine monophosphate (AMP), and, in some instances, adenosine and inorganic phosphate (Pi). Levels of c-di-AMP in bacteria can be determined using diffe

Characterizing progressive cortical thinning in multiple system atrophy: a longitudinal MRI study.

Longitudinal cortical involvement in Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) remains poorly investigated, as the disease is classically characterized by infratentorial and striatal atrophy. In this study, we characterized the longitudinal progression of cortical thinning in MSA, together with subcortical atrophy, using MRI. We studied 36 clinically diagnosed patients (25 cerebellar, 11 Parkinsonian variant) who underwent T1-weighted MRI at baseline and follow-up (median 0.96 years; interquartile range 0.20). Images were processed with state-of-the-art neuroimaging tools. Longitudinal changes in cortical

Zn Complexes with the 4-Acyl-Pyrazol-5-One Basis and Their Thin Films.

Three zinc(II) complexes based on 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-acyl-5-pyrazolone were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopy (UV-vis, fluorescence and IR). Crystallographic studies reveal that the complexes have a mononuclear structure in the solid state; however, intermolecular interactions combine the complexes into a 1D polymer chain. The complexes exhibit weak luminescence in the polycrystalline state and moderate emission in solutions and thin amorphous films. Thin films of the studied compounds were deposited on a glass substrate using therm

A simple constitutive framework for thinning-thickening transitions in dense granular-fluid mixtures.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal foreign bodies are reported to be the second most common type of ocular injury. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) is a valuable tool for the early diagnosis and monitoring the progress of treatment in cases of ocular trauma. Herein we aimed to report on a patient with an intra-corneal foreign body and the role of AS-OCT in management. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old male presented with foreign body sensation in his left eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscopic examination revealed a peripherally located intrastromally embedded foreign body with a free anterior

Facial Nerve Thinning Correlates With Motor Function in Adults With Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) leads to progressive lower motor neuron loss. While neurophysiological techniques such as CMAP and MUNIX indirectly estimate motor unit number, few imaging-based biomarkers exist. We aimed to assess whether MRI-derived facial nerve diameters distinguish adult SMA patients from controls and correlate with clinical status. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including 22 adult SMA patients (Types II/III) and 14 age and sex-matched healthy controls at a single center. All participants underwent 3T brain MRI with bFFE sequences. Diam

Global Cortical Thinning Predicts Slower Forward and Backward Walking in Multiple Sclerosis.

Gait impairment and falls are common in multiple sclerosis (MS), yet the neural substrates contributing to mobility decline remain poorly understood. While prior studies have linked regional gray matter atrophy to motor outcomes, the role of diffuse cortical changes in complex gait tasks, such as backward walking, is less clear. This study examined whether diffuse cortical thinning is associated with forward and backward walking speed, and whether these relationships differ between fallers and nonfallers in MS. Forty-three individuals with MS (55 ± 10 years; 65% female) completed forward and b

Solid Thin-Film Battery Using a Densely Packed LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Crystal Layer.

A 5 V-class LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) positive electrode has excellent potential for increasing the energy density of solid-state Li batteries. In this study, we report the stable cycling of a solid thin-film Li battery using a densely packed LNMO crystal layer, which has a high packing density and a well-developed crystal plane. Annealing a battery reduces the resistance at the interface of a Li3PO4 solid electrolyte and LNMO for an order of magnitude, from 5.3 × 102 to 5.7 × 101 Ωcm2, enhancing the battery performance. This paper lays the groundwork for developing all-solid-state Li batteries us

The role of superlattice phases and interparticle distance in the magnetic behaviour of SPION thin films.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with tailored surface modifications were employed to fabricate ordered thin films through a drop-casting technique. By systematically varying the ligand chain length using stearic acid, decanoic acid, and hexanoic acid, we precisely controlled the interparticle distances within the films. Comprehensive investigations utilizing superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry elucidated the films' superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature, as well as notable exchange interactions at lower temperatures. Notably, these exch

Placentophagia in Tribal and Modern Societies: Navigating the Thin Line Between Risk and Benefit.

OBJECTIVE: Eating the placenta after birth, or placentophagia, is common in mammals but questionable in humans. There is little scientific evidence to support the claims made by practitioners that it promotes lactation, prevents depression, and aids in postpartum healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper reviews the historical background, cultural relevance, ethical considerations, advantages, and potential risks of human placentophagia. The placenta does contain hormones and nutrients, but their efficacy and bioavailability have not been established. Furthermore, safety concerns (such as ba

Immune-related gene signatures of thin endometrium: a transcriptomic and single-cell study.

BACKGROUND: Thin endometrium (TE) is associated with impaired endometrial receptivity and reduced rates of successful pregnancy. However, the immune-related transcriptomic alterations underlying TE remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and immune signatures associated with TE using integrated transcriptomic approaches. RESULTS: Bulk RNA sequencing of endometrial tissues from TE patients and healthy controls revealed 57 DEGs. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis revealed the involvement of immune activation processes including leukocyte degra

White matter hyperintensities contribute to early cortical thinning in addition to tau in aging.

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are associated with cortical thinning in distant brain regions. However, it is currently unclear how WMH affect neurodegeneration in early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we investigated associations between WMH and cortical thickness in temporal regions involved in early AD (AD cortical signature), while correcting for regional amyloid and tau accumulation assessed by PET. We performed cross-sectional (n = 551), and longitudinal (n = 125) analyses in older adults without dementia, also stratified by amyloid positivity. We evaluated WMH volume - as a measure

Elucidating and Mitigating Instabilities of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Thin Films in Aqueous Environments.

In this study, 88% and 99% hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH88%H and PVOH99%H, respectively) polymers were statically adsorbed and spin coated from an aqueous solution onto high molecular weight (HMW) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. The resulting PVOH thin films are unstable and rupture into fractal structures in a diffusion-limited aggregation fashion upon drying. The dynamics of these fractal thin films upon immersion in water and upon exposure to a single water droplet were closely examined. A newly developed "landmarking and overlaying" method was used to quantify the extent of
