Memory traces of duration and location in the right intraparietal sulcus.

Time and space form an integral part of every human experience, and for the neuronal representation of these perceptual dimensions, previous studies point to the involvement of the right-hemispheric intraparietal sulcus and structures in the medial temporal lobe. Here we used multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate long-term memory traces for temporal and spatial stimulus features in those areas. Participants were trained on four images associated with short versus long durations and with left versus right locations. Our results demonstrate stable representations of both temporal an

Fluent contextual reading is associated with greater synchronization of the visual and auditory networks, fluent reading and better speed of processing in children with dyslexia.

The asynchrony theory of dyslexia postulates weaker visual (orthographical processing) and auditory (phonological processing) network synchrony in dyslexic readers. The weaker visual-auditory network synchronization is suggested to contribute to slow processing speed, which supports cognitive control, contributing to single-word reading difficulty and lower reading fluency. The current study aims to determine the neurobiological signature for this theory and to examine if prompting enhanced reading speed through deleted text is associated with a greater synchronization of functional connectivi

Compensating for a shifting world: evolving reference frames of visual and auditory signals across three multimodal brain areas.

Stimulus locations are detected differently by different sensory systems, but ultimately they yield similar percepts and behavioral responses. How the brain transcends initial differences to compute similar codes is unclear. We quantitatively compared the reference frames of two sensory modalities, vision and audition, across three interconnected brain areas involved in generating saccades, namely the frontal eye fields (FEF), lateral and medial parietal cortex (M/LIP), and superior colliculus (SC). We recorded from single neurons in head-restrained monkeys performing auditory- and visually gu

Altered smell and taste: Anosmia, parosmia and the impact of long Covid-19.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative olfactory (smell) dysfunctions are a common side effect of post-viral illness and known to impact quality of life and health status. Evidence is emerging that taste and smell loss are common symptoms of Covid-19 that may emerge and persist long after initial infection. The aim of the present study was to document the impact of post Covid-19 alterations to taste and smell. METHODS: We conducted exploratory thematic analysis of user-generated text from 9000 users of the AbScent Covid-19 Smell and Taste Loss moderated Facebook support group from March 24 to 30th September

Temporal acuity is preserved in the auditory midbrain of aged mice.

Impaired temporal resolution of the central auditory system has long been suggested to contribute to speech understanding deficits in the elderly. However, it has been difficult to differentiate between direct age-related central deficits and indirect effects of confounding peripheral age-related hearing loss on temporal resolution. To differentiate this, we measured temporal acuity in the inferior colliculus (IC) of aged CBA/J and C57BL/6 mice, as a model of aging with and without concomitant hearing loss. We used two common measures of auditory temporal processing: gap detection as a measure

Re-reconsidering the role of temporal order in spoken word recognition.

Spoken word recognition models incorporate the temporal unfolding of word information by assuming that positional match constrains lexical activation. Recent findings challenge the linearity constraint. In the visual world paradigm, Toscano, Anderson, and McMurray observed that listeners preferentially viewed a picture of a target word's anadrome competitor (e.g., competitor bus for target sub) compared with phonologically unrelated distractors (e.g., well) or competitors sharing an overlapping vowel (e.g., sun). Toscano et al. concluded that spoken word recognition relies on coarse grain spec

Auditory, Visual, and Cross-Modal Temporal Processing Skills Among Chinese Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

The present study examined whether temporal processing (TP) is associated with reading of a non-alphabetic script, that is, Chinese. A total of 126 primary school-aged Chinese children from Taiwan (63 children with dyslexia) completed cross-modal, visual, and auditory temporal order judgment tasks and measures of Chinese reading and literacy-related skills. The results showed that typically developing children and children with dyslexia differed in all TP skills. Structural equation modeling indicated that cross-modal TP contributed independently to character recognition in the entire sample i

Effects of multimodal synchrony on infant attention and heart rate during events with social and nonsocial stimuli.

Attention is a state of readiness or alertness, associated with behavioral and psychophysiological responses, that facilitates learning and memory. Multisensory and dynamic events have been shown to elicit more attention and produce greater sustained attention in infants than auditory or visual events alone. Such redundant and often temporally synchronous information guides selectivity and facilitates perception, learning, and memory of properties of events specified by redundancy. In addition, events involving faces or other social stimuli provide an extraordinary amount of redundant informat

Zapping the gap: Reducing the multisensory temporal binding window by means of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

Synchrony among the senses lies at the heart of our possession of a unified conscious perception of the world. However, due to discrepancies in physical and neural information processing from different senses, the brain accommodates a limited range of temporal asynchronies between sensory inputs, i.e. the multisensory temporal binding window (TBW). Using non-invasive brain stimulation, we sought to modulate the audio-visual TBW and to identify cortical areas implicated in the conscious perception of multisensory synchrony. Participants performed a simultaneity judgment task while experiencing

Dissociable spatial and non-spatial attentional deficits after circumscribed thalamic stroke.

Thalamic nuclei act as sensory, motor and cognitive relays between multiple subcortical areas and the cerebral cortex. They play a crucial role in cognitive functions such as executive functioning, memory and attention. In the acute period after thalamic stroke attentional deficits are common. The precise functional relevance of specific nuclei or vascular sub regions of the thalamus for attentional sub functions is still unclear. The theory of visual attention (TVA) allows the measurement of four independent attentional parameters (visual short term memory storage capacity (VSTM), visual perc

Color and spatial frequency are related to visual pattern sensitivity in migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential for particular colors to alleviate visual discomfort when people with migraine view repetitive geometric or striped patterns. BACKGROUND: Visual stimuli, such as flicker, glare, or stripes, can trigger migraine and headache. They can also elicit feelings of discomfort and aversion. There are reports that color can be used to decrease the experience of discomfort and reduce migraine frequency. DESIGN/METHODS: Five sets of striped patterns (3, 12 cycles per degree [cpd]) were created using cardinal colors tailored to selectively stimulate the early visual pat

Perceived loudness of speech based on the characteristics of glottal excitation source.

The impulse-like characteristic of glottal excitation in speech production is an important factor in the perception of loudness of speech signals. This characteristic is attributed to the abruptness of the closing phase in the glottal cycle. In this paper, an acoustic feature, called strength of excitation, is proposed to represent the impulse-like nature of excitation. The strength of excitation is derived from the linear prediction residual of speech signals, where the residual can be considered as an estimate of the source of excitation. Since the loudness of speech is perceived over one or

Scent marking by the male domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is stimulated by an object's novelty and its specific visual or tactile characteristics.

"Chinning" is a stereotyped scent marking behavior of domestic rabbits, in which the animal rubs the underside of its chin against objects in order to deposit scent gland secretions. Although the long-term maintenance of chinning requires circulating gonadal steroids, little is known about the acute regulation of this behavior. To define specific environmental stimuli that engage the chinning motor pattern, male rabbits were placed into an open field arena containing markable objects ("standard" bricks, "tall" bricks, or polished onyx spheres), observed for 30 min, returned to the home cage fo

Effects of phase duration and pulse rate on loudness and pitch percepts in the first auditory midbrain implant patients: Comparison to cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant results.

The auditory midbrain implant (AMI), which is designed for stimulation of the inferior colliculus (IC), is now in clinical trials. The AMI consists of a single shank array (20 contacts) and uses a stimulation strategy originally designed for cochlear implants since it is already approved for human use and we do not yet know how to optimally activate the auditory midbrain. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of different pulse rates and phase durations on loudness and pitch percepts because these parameters are required to implement the AMI stimulation strategy. Although each

Attentional blink deficits observed in dyslexia depend on task demands.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to a deficit in the ability to identify a second target following a first target when both appear randomly within a rapid sequence of distractor items. The AB of five adults with dyslexia (ADys) was compared with that of a group of normal adult readers. Two tasks were completed which differed in the conceptual category of the target items (a red digit or letter) relative to the distractor items (all black digits). In the digit condition, all ADys cases showed a longer AB compared to the control group. In the letter condition, all participants showed improvemen

Dissociation between deficits in explicit procedures and implicit processes in the visual-spatial and the phonological systems during reading acquisition.

Two clinical studies are reported of children with proficient word-reading skill despite severe performance deficits of explicit visual recognition of the lateral ("mirror image") orientation of letters. In dissociation from their deficit in such an explicit procedure, the children had proficient implicit processing of letters that change identity with lateral reversal, as shown in nonword reading, and in letter-naming accuracy and reaction times relative to a normal comparison sample of children. In one child, another dissociation was also apparent in the phonological system. He had a severe

Sustained attention and response inhibition in boys with fragile X syndrome: measures of continuous performance.

Sustained attention and response inhibition were examined in boys with full mutation fragile X syndrome (FXS) using adapted visual and auditory continuous performance tests (CPTs). Only 61% of 56 boys with visual CPT data and 54% of 52 boys with auditory data were able to demonstrate sufficient understanding to complete the visual and auditory CPTs, respectively. Mental age (MA) predicted whether boys with FXS were able to demonstrate understanding of the CPTs. The performance of boys with FXS who were able to complete the CPTs was compared to a sample of boys without disabilities matched on M

Aging and filtering by movement in visual search.

We examined the ability of younger and older adults to selectively process moving items and ignore stationary items in a task that required the search for a target defined by a conjunction of movement and form (i.e., search for a moving X among moving Os and stationary Xs) in displays of 5, 9, 17, and 25 stimuli (Experiment 1) and displays of 5, 10, and 20 stimuli (Experiment 2). We also investigated subjects' performance in two feature search tasks, the search for a target defined by movement or form. Finally, we examined the influence of practice on feature and conjunction search. Younger an

From symmetry to asymmetry.

An introduction is given on Matte Blanco's theory about symmetrical and asymmetrical thought processes and their correspondence with primary and secondary thought processes. The system unconscious is seen in terms of Matte Blanco's principles of symmetry and generalization and their implication in the absence of time, space and the differentiation between the whole and its parts. Clinical material from two cases of agoraphobia are shown as examples of a disturbance or absence of the concept of space in the unconscious and its translation into a symptomatology.
