The purpose of this review is to evaluate case reports of papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) to assess its relationship with human papillomavirus (HPV). The medical literature was searched for case reports of this condition. A total of 115 cases of PSCC were found that described the condition in sufficient detail. HPV detection was performed in only 22 of the 115 cases of PSCC (19%), and 11 of the 22 cases (50%) are related to this virus. The association between dermatomyositis and malignancy of the pharynx is rare among whites but not uncommon among Far Eastern and north African populations. We report two cases of Caucasian Italian patients with dermatomyositis associated, respectively, with nasopharyngeal and tonsillar carcinomas. The relationship between dermatomyositis and malignancy is also discussed.

29 patients with previously untreated clinical stage I and II extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck received involved or extended field radiotherapy at the Northern Israel Oncology Center during the years 1968 to 1979. Complete initial locoregional control was achieved in all patients; however, 18 patients (62%) relapsed. The clinical and pathologic findings were studied in 68 patients with primary lymphoma of Waldeyer's ring (WR). The initial sites included: tonsil (51%; 9% bilateral), nasopharynx (35%), base of tongue (9%), and multiple areas (4%). The mean age was 58 years, with a male to female ratio of 1.1:1.0. Our aim was to compare OCPC incidence in PR, by anatomical site, with that of non-Hispanic whites (NHW), non-Hispanic blacks (NHB), and Hispanic (USH) individuals in the USA.

Eleven cases of extranodal orofacial lymphomas (EOFL), consisting of 4 HTLV related and 7 HTLV unrelated EOFLs, have been investigated with regard to their immunohistological and clinical features. The HTLV related EOFLs were found to be of the T-cell phenotype and were associated with a poorer prognosis than the HTLV unrelated EOFLs, most of which were of B-cell origin. The comparatively high incidence of T-cell type in our series was considered to be related to the high percentage of HTLV carriers in our district, an area in which adult T-cell leukemia lymphoma has been found to be endemic.

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic sarcoma is an exceedingly rare malignant neoplasm composed of cells with a monocyte/macrophage phenotype. In the current nosology of histiocytic neoplasms, histiocytic sarcoma is separate from indeterminate cell histiocytosis, a generally benign disorder characterized by proliferation of a CD1a+ and S-100+ population of cells lacking Birbeck granules usually limited to the skin.
