The structure and functional morphology of the mouthparts were investigated in adult hangingfly Bicaubittacus appendiculatus (Esben-Petersen, 1927) by scanning electron microscopy and histological serial sections. The mandibulate mouthparts consist of a labrum-epipharynx, paired mandibles and maxillae, and unpaired labium and hypopharynx. The labrum is elongated and tapered toward the apex. The epipharynx is furnished with numerous sensilla. The mandibles are sword-shaped, with an outer sharp tooth curved mesad and an inner blunt corner. The basal region of each mandible processes a conical pr

BACKGROUND: In crustaceans, several mechanisms provide for the mechanical strength of the cuticular "tools" (dactyli, claws, jaws), which se … is characterized by a high density, consists of three layers, and increases in thickness toward the tooth apex. The epicuticle is enriched with Br, while the concentrations of Ca and P reach the peak values in the softer internal tissues of the teeth. These data broaden the view of the diversity of adaptation mechanisms providing for the strengthening of cut …

A new radiographic method was developed for measuring changes in root length. With this technique, orthodontic intrusion was investigated as a potential cause of apical root resorption of maxillary incisors. The experimental group consisted of 17 patients with excessive overbite who were treated with a Burstone-type intrusion arch, which delivered a low level of force (about 15 gm per tooth). A control group was made up of 17 patients in full-arch fixed appliances who were randomly selected. After a period of approximately 4 months, the intrusion group had only slightly more root resorption th

OBJECTIVE: Apical surgery is an intervention to treat teeth with persistent or recurrent endodontic infection. The proximity of the mental foramen and mandibular canal may pose a risk of altered sensation when performing surgical interventions in the posterior mandible. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of neurosensory disturbances after apical surgery of mandibular premolars and molars. The secondary objective was to evaluate whether the occurrence of altered sensation correlated with the distances from the apex or the periapical lesion to the relevant anatomical structure

BACKGROUND: Damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) during the extraction of impacted mandibular third molars in close proximity to the mandibular canal is a postoperative complication that most frequently occurs in patients 40 years and older.
METHODS: The authors evaluated the postoperative complications of 43 coronectomies of impacted mandibular third molars in 37 patients (17 men and 20 women, mean age [standard deviation] 31 [2] years). The authors used cone-beam computed tomographic images to determine that all of the teeth that underwent a coronectomy were in close proximity to the

Aims of this work were to examine lateral canals in extracted teeth, to propose a new technique to produce artificial lateral canals, and to compare two obturation techniques. Cleared roots were examined to record measure and shape of lateral canals. Artificial lateral canals were prepared on human demineralized teeth before final clearing. Specimens were divided in two groups: canals of group 1 were filled with Schilder's technique, canals of group 2 were filled with vertical compaction with apical backfilling. Stereomicroscopic analysis of lateral canal filling revealed lower filling rates i

Although slow maxillary expansion is commonly used, numerous studies have demonstrated that the increase in dental arch width is primarily due to buccal tipping of the lateral teeth, often accompanied by recession of the vestibular alveolar process. This investigation addresses whether buccal shields inserted in a modified expansion plate can improve tooth movement, prevent vertical resorption of the alveolar process, and produce skeletal changes. For this purpose, frontal- and lateral cephalograms, along with cast models of 40 patients (17 males and 23 females; age: 10.28 ± 1.65) were studied

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the response of periapical tissues to the endodontic sealer Endométhasone in root canal fillings short of or beyond the apical foramen.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty root canals of premolars and incisors of 2 mongrel dogs were used. After coronal access and pulp extirpation, the canals were instrumented up to a size 55 K-file and the apical cemental barrier was penetrated with a size 15 K-file to obtain a main apical foramen, which was widened to a size 25 K-file. The canals were irrigated with saline at each change of file. The root canals were obturated either

A 9 year old girl presented an impacted lower right 2nd premolar which not only was in horizontal position, but its crown was directed lingually. As a lower right 2nd premolar was in such a position that normal eruption was impossible, the deciduous predecessor was extracted at 9 years of age, and then sufficient space had been created for the lower right 2nd premolar to be erupted, and the eruption of it was observed for about 2 years. 2 years later, radiographic indication showed that no spontaneous eruption of a lower right 2nd premolar was to be expected. At 11 years of age, surgical expos

This case report presents a clinical and radiographic follow-up (38 months) of pulpectomy treatment performed on maxillary primary anterior teeth using Vitapex. Vitapex was resorbed extraradicularly and intraradicularly without apparent ill effect, and proved to be clinically and radiographically successful. The present case report illustrates that even if the paste resorbs within the canals, the clinical and radiographical outcome is excellent. A longer follow-up is recommended to evaluate if there is any effect on the permanent succedaneous tooth.
