OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study analyse the profile of intrusion in deciduous (DT) and permanent teeth (PT), the occurrence of healing complications (HC), type of treatments and predisposing factors.
METHODS: The records of patients attended from 2005 to 2011 were analysed. Records of patients who had one or more intruded DT or PT were included in the study. Data collected from dental records included age, gender, attendance (immediate/mediate), healing complications and type of treatment. A Chi-square test and Logistic regression (p ≤ .05) were performed to evaluate the associations betw

The fracture of anterior teeth in children creates psychological impact on both the parents and the child especially if the injury affects the permanent dentition and involves the loss of extensive tooth structure. Besides the pain and discomfort from the injury, the child's changed appearance may make him the target for teasing and even ridicule by other children. Traumatic teeth can be treated in different ways, in the WHO system, eight groups were classified according to the anatomical structure involved, and treatment planning depends on the type of the injuries to the teeth and their supp

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the biomechanical properties of fracture resistance in cracked teeth using five different full-coverage restorations made of three different materials. Materials and Methods: A 3D model of a mandibular first molar was created to design five different full-coverage repair models: crown, crown with composite resin filling inside, occlusal veneer, occlusal veneer with composite resin filling inside and onlay. These repair models were fabricated using three different materials, namely, zirconia, lithium disilicate (LDS), and a hybrid polymer-infiltrated c

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the differential radiographic diagnostics of teeth with incomplete root fracture.
METHODS: Information on 88 teeth with either a vertical root fracture without displacement of the fractured fragments (n = 22), a vertical periodontal defect (n = 22), a periodontal-endodontic lesion (n = 22) or an endodontic-periapical lesion (n = 22) was collected retrospectively from the patients' records.
RESULTS: Significant differences in the mean probing pocket depths were found between each of the four groups of lesions. Teeth with root fractures demonstrated smaller mean probing

AIM: Severe caries in mixed dentition frequently affects mandibular first permanent molars, often necessitating full-coverage restorations. Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns are among the most commonly used options. This study aimed to compare the internal fit and fracture resistance of SSCs and PFMs in both intact and restored mandibular first molars.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty extracted mandibular first molars were randomly divided into four groups: (1) intact teeth-SSCs, (2) intact teeth-PFMs, (3) restored teeth-SSCs, and (4) restored teeth-PFMs. In

This systematic review aimed to assess if the use of fiber posts reinforces weakened immature teeth. A systematic review was conducted of laboratory studies that evaluated the fracture resistance of simulated immature teeth restored with fiber posts compared to teeth restored exclusively with resin. An electronic search was performed using the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus and LILACS, BBO, and grey literature. Two independent researchers screened the titles and abstracts of the retrieved studies for relevance to the research question. Subsequently, the full texts

BACKGROUND: There is no sufficient literature on the effect of post location on endodontically treated premolar teeth with 2 roots.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of fiber post location on fracture resistance and failure mode of endodontically treated premolars with 2 roots.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty extracted maxillary first premolars with 2 roots were divided randomly into 5 groups. Group 1 was comprised of sound teeth, which received only metal crowns (control). Teeth from groups 2, 3, 4, and 5 were decoronated 2 mm above the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and

With the recent influx of osseointegrated endosseous implants in dentistry, attention has been drawn away from using endodontic stabilizers as a means of stabilizing and retaining teeth. It is our opinion that endodontic stabilizers should be considered in the treatment planning of seemingly nonretainable teeth. They are biocompatible and have the additional advantage of maintaining the periodontal membrane attachment of the remaining tooth. Extraction and subsequent replacement with osseointegrated implants should only be considered after all other means of retaining the natural tooth have be

A relatively new method for treating transverse root fractures near the gingival crevice is reviewed. Two cases are described in which the fractured teeth are orthodontically erupted to facilitate restoration. A periodontal pocket was reduced in the first case, and the technique was modified to accommodate a patient wearing a partial denture in the second case. The technique appears to be a favorable alternative to extraction or periodontal surgery.

UNLABELLED: Dento-alveolar trauma presents commonly in general dental practice, but may prove difficult to manage for those unfamiliar with it. Timely and well-informed intervention can significantly improve the clinical outcome for the patient. This article aims to inform the clinician on best current practice for the assessment and initial management of dental traumatic injuries, incorporating current international guidelines and practical arrangements for follow-up care.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The dental trauma patient often presents to the general dental practitioner and the appropriate emer

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the effects of revascularisation and apexification procedures on biomechanical behaviour of immature teeth using 3-dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five 3D FEA permanent maxillary incisor models were developed from CBCT scans and available literature data: Model MT: Mature tooth, Model IT: Immature tooth (Cvek's stage 3), Model AT: Apexified tooth-mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification, Model RTB: Revascularised tooth with blood, and Model RTS: Revascularised tooth with supplementary scaffold. Using FEA, a mast

Generalized idiopathic apical root resorption is an unusual finding, especially in adolescents. This report describes a case in which the root resorption was an incidental finding in a patient referred for orthodontic treatment after suffering trauma to a central incisor. It emphasizes the need for adequate clinical and radiological examination before undertaking active orthodontic treatment.

The molecular background for osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is mutations in one of the two genes (COL1A1 and COL1A2) encoding collagen I. The disease is characterised by varying degrees of fragile bones, retarded growth, bone deformities, tooth abnormalities, blue sclerae, and hearing loss. Treatment with bisphosphonates reduces the incidence of fractures in children with severe OI, while this still remains to be demonstrated in adults. Results from bone marrow transplantation and animal experiments may lead to alternative treatment in severe OI.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study describes the use of ventral mandibular trepanation for extraction of diseased mandibular incisors in gu … curative procedure. Unlike the conventional extraction with luxators, it does not bear the risk of tooth fractures resulting in tooth fragments remaining in the alveolus.

PURPOSE: We sought to verify the cortical thickness and presence of tooth roots and inferior alveolar canal where miniplates are placed using the Champy technique to treat parasymphyseal fractures between the canine and premolar. We also studied these anatomic features at the same level anteriorly and posteriorly to the mental foramen.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 dry, normal adult dentate human hemimandibles (40 male and 40 female) were studied. Verification was performed at 3 levels-above (S), below (I), and at the same height as the mental foramen (F). At each level, the thickness
