Orthodontic and periodontal considerations in managing teeth exhibiting significant delay in eruption.

AIM: Significant delay in tooth eruption may be observed in many orthodontic patients. This delay may lead to complications, such as devitalization, ankylosis, external root resorption, injury to the adjacent teeth, and mucogingival problems. These complications may result in prolonged treatment time, esthetic deformities, damage to the periodontal tissues, and tooth loss. This report investigates the special considerations needed in treating such cases. METHODS: Combined orthodontic and surgical treatment can be used in managing teeth exhibiting significant delay in eruption. RESULTS: A hig…

Evaluation of human growth hormone (somatropin) in socket healing: a split-mouth randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Techniques for preserving alveolar bone after tooth extraction are becoming a part of the usual clinical practice of clinicians. These techniques aim at minimizing postextraction bony resorption, hence, minimizing subsequent follow-up for implant insertion. This randomized clinical study aimed to measure and compare alveolar bone and soft tissue healing between extraction sockets treated with somatropin to untreated sockets. METHODS: The study is designed as a split-mouth randomized clinical trial. The selected patients were indicated for bilateral symmetrical tooth extraction, wh

Dental paleopathology in a Serbian Medieval population.

Analysis of the pattern of dental disease in two Late Medieval populations from cemeteries excavated at archaeological sites in western Serbia was based on the study of tooth wear, ante-mortem tooth loss, caries, dental enamel hypoplasia, alveolar resorption, abscesses and calculus. The findings reported here show a high prevalence of attrition, alveolar resorption and caries, which suggest an abrasive diet and poor oral hygiene.

Labiolingual Loading Biomechanics on Central Incisor Under Different Periodontal Conditions: A Finite Element Study.

OBJECTIVE: In this finite element study, the biomechanical effects of force application at different lingual versus labial sites on a maxillary central incisor with alveolar bone loss and proclination were compared. METHODS: Finite element models were constructed to simulate 4 levels of alveolar bone loss: none, 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of the root length. Labiolingual inclination was defined by the U1-SN angle (97°-115°). A combined force of 1.5 N retraction and 0.5 N intrusion was applied at 4 sites: the labial crown centre (La), the lingual fossa midpoint (Li(M)), the lingual fossa-cingulum trans

Alveolar Bone Fracture: Pathognomonic Sign for Clinical Diagnosis.

AIM: Dental injuries, especially luxation and avulsion, are common. Dental trauma can cause alveolar bone fracture that can lead to tooth loss and malocclusion. Single tooth alveolar bone fractures are difficult to identify unless it protrudes through the overlying mucosa and can be visualized. Pain, malocclusion, and tooth mobility provide signs of suspected alveolar bone fractures. Integrity of the proximate alveolar bone should be examined for fractures where avulsion, luxation, or other tooth trauma is detected. Any suggestion of alveolar fractures should be further investigated with an ap…

Interplay of depressive symptoms and clinical oral health conditions: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the potential links between clinically assessed oral health conditions and depressive symptoms in adults. Six databases were searched for observational studies examining dental caries, periodontal disease, or tooth loss through clinical examination, and depressive symptoms through validated instruments. Data extraction and quality assessment (JBI) were independently performed by two reviewers, and random-effects meta-analyses were conducted for compatible effect measures (OR), assessing heterogeneity. Out of 6.917 unique records, 20 studies…

Assessment of the Orthodontic External Resorption in Periodontal Breakdown-A Finite Elements Analysis (Part I).

This Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) assessed the accuracy of Tresca failure criteria (maximum shear stress) for the study of external root resorption. Additionally, the tooth absorption-dissipation ability was assessed. Overall, 81 models of the second mandibular premolar, out of a total of 324 simulations, were involved. Five orthodontic movements (intrusion, extrusion, rotation, translation, and tipping) were simulated under 0.6 N and 1.2 N in a horizontal progressive periodontal breakdown simulation of 0-8 mm. In all simulations, Tresca criteria accurately displayed the localized areas of m

Minimally invasive approach to hypoplastic stains with complementary color neutralization: A clinical report.

A minimally invasive technique is described for masking enamel hypoplasia stains in a young patient with minimal or no tooth wear and different opacity patterns on the central and lateral incisors, canines, and first molars. The selected technique involved masking the affected substrate with resin pigments in complementary colors to the stain, followed by a composite resin overlay with minimal tooth structure wear. After pigmentation, the stains were neutralized, resulting in a neutral gray substrate that required the use of a higher-value composite resin to achieve complete stain masking. Thi

Use of autologous dentin matrix in bone defects augmentation - a literature review.

A number of regenerative materials are currently used to regenerate or preserve the alveolar pro- cess. One of these is autogenous dentin matrix. With many valuable properties such as easy availability, simple preparation, low cost, low risk of disease transmission and no risk of triggering an immune response against the graft, autogenous dentin matrix appears to be a very good material of choice. The following article is intended to provide an overview of the use of autogenous dentin matrix.
