Root caries on a Paranthropus robustus third molar from Drimolen.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is often perceived as a modern human disease. However, their presence is documented in many early human groups, various nonhuman primates and, increasingly, our hominin ancestors and relatives. In this study, we describe an antemortem lesion on the root of a Paranthropus robustus third molar from Drimolen, South Africa, which likely represents another example of caries in fossil hominins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The molar, DNH 40, is dated to 2.0-1.5 Ma and displays a lesion on the mesial root surface, extending from the cementoenamel junction 3 mm down toward the ape

Kyphoplasty vs conservative treatment: a case-control study in 110 post-menopausal women population. Is kyphoplasty better than conservative treatment?

UNLABELLED: Zooarchaeological age-at-death profiles for domesticated ruminants can be inferred from tooth eruption, replacement, and wear. These profiles contain important information on slaughter management and have been used informally to infer the goals of past husbandry strategies. In principle, sex-specific survival curves could inform on various productivity parameters, including herd growth rates and sustainability, milk and meat yields, macronutrient and calorie yields, and feed consumed. Knowledge of these parameter values would allow identification of differences in husbandry economi

Laboratory evaluation of the erosive potential of fluoride-free mouthwashes using a dental erosion simulation model.

PURPOSE: To investigate the enamel/dentin surface loss caused by acidic fluoride-free mouthwashes using dental erosion simulation model. METHODS: Enamel and dentin bovine slabs (n=8) were subjected to 5 days of treatment (four 1-minute mouthwash treatments/day). Six fluoride-free mouthwashes (MW1-MW6) with varying pH (3.03-5.12) were tested. Three 0.3% citric acid solutions (pH 3.0-5.0) and deionized water served as controls. Surface loss (SL) was measured using non-contact profilometry; enamel hardness was assessed via Knoop microhardness. Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: For

Assessing the willingness of Nigerian dentists to adopt salivary diagnostic kits: a pilot cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Saliva has emerged as a valuable diagnostic fluid because of its non-invasive collection, cost-effectiveness, and the presence of multiple biomarkers. Despite its clinical potential, the use of saliva-based diagnostics in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria, remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study assessed Nigerian dentists’ awareness and willingness to adopt ancillary salivary diagnostic kits in dental practice. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 119 licensed dentists in Nigeria, using an online questionnaire. Data on sociodemogr

AWAKE BRUXISM PREVALENCE ACROSS POPULATIONS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS.

OBJECTIVES: Bruxism significantly affects oral health, with consequences such as tooth wear and restoration failures. Additionally, it is linked to various risk factors and co-occurring disorders. Unlike sleep bruxism, awake bruxism (AB) is more strongly associated with psychosocial factors. This review aimed to evaluate the prevalence of AB in the general population and specific subpopulations. METHODS: The review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023398868). A literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science until April 8, 2025 identified studies that fu

Navigating the assessment of sleep-related bruxism: Clinical guidance for applying the 2023 ICSD-3-TR criteria.

Dentists with expertise in sleep medicine play a growing role in screening patients for sleep disorders, particularly sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and insomnia, while concurrently evaluating and managing sleep bruxism (SB). Once SB is identified, dentists typically focus on mitigating oral complications, like as tooth wear, managing grinding sounds, and addressing associated orofacial pain. In contrast, SB may often be encountered by sleep physicians as an incidental finding during sleep recording performed for the evaluation of other sleep disorders, including SDB, insomnia, periodic limb

Pathology findings and correlation with body condition index in stranded killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the northeastern Pacific and Hawaii from 2004 to 2013.

Understanding health and mortality in killer whales (Orcinus orca) is crucial for management and conservation actions. We reviewed pathology reports from 53 animals that stranded in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Hawaii between 2004 and 2013 and used data from 35 animals that stranded from 2001 to 2017 to assess association with morphometrics, blubber thickness, body condition and cause of death. Of the 53 cases, cause of death was determined for 22 (42%) and nine additional animals demonstrated findings of significant importance for population health. Causes of calf mortalities included infect

Chewing shrews: Examining the morphology and function of the masticatory musculature in Soricidae via diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography.

Essential for sustaining a high metabolic rate is the efficient fragmentation of food, which is determined by molar morphology and the movement of the jaw. The latter is related to the jaw morphology and the arrangement of the masticatory muscles. Soricid jaw apparatuses are unique among mammals, as the articulation facet on the condylar process is separated into a dorsal and a ventral part, which has often been linked to more differentiated jaw motions. Soricidae also possess a remarkably elongated angular process. However, the precise function of the unique morphology of soricid jaw apparatu

Orthodontic treatment of traumatically avulsed maxillary central incisors with bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion in an adult female: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians agree that obtaining and retaining good treatment results for missing maxillary central incisors owing to trauma is not easy. Management of adult patients with permanent maxillary central incisor loss who visit the clinic with high expectations for aesthetics and function pose a significant diagnostic dilemma. Therefore, esthetic and functional outcomes should be taken into consideration when deciding the proper treatment method. The treatment described in this study aimed to reestablish smile esthetics by proposing an effective multidisciplinary clinical approach that i

Gait analysis in a patient with severe Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: a case study with a new orthotic device for footdrop.

Management of footdrop in severe Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) patients is a challenge owing to the combination of quadriceps muscle weakness, distal muscular atrophy, sensory impairment and poor soft tissue resistance to the placement of an orthotic device. We present a case study of a patient who gradually became unable to use his ankle-foot orthoses because they hampered the compensative movements required to stabilize his knees passively and caused pain. The aim of this report is to describe orthotic management in such a severe CMT case and to present a new orthotic device that we devised for

Matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases in gingival crevicular fluid during orthodontic tooth movement.

Orthodontic tooth movement requires extensive re-modelling of the periodontium. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) degrade the extracellular matrix during re-modelling, while their activity is regulated by the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The aim of this study was to investigate differences in MMP and TIMP levels in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) at the resorption and apposition sides of orthodontically moved teeth, and to compare these with control teeth. GCF samples were collected from eight orthodontic patients wearing fixed appliances with superelastic nickel-titaniu
