Isoniazid, pyrazinamide and rifampicin have hepatotoxic potential, and can lead to such reactions during antituberculosis chemotherapy. Most of the hepatotoxic reactions are dose-related; some are, however, caused by drug hypersensitivity. The immunogenetics of antituberculosis drug-induced hepatotoxicity, especially inclusive of acetylaor phenotype polymorphism, have been increasingly unravelled. Other principal clinical risk factors for hepatotoxicity are old age, malnutrition, alcoholism, HIV infection, as well as chronic hepatitis B and C infections. Drug-induced hepatic dysfunction usuall

BACKGROUND: Migrants are at increased risk of infections including HIV, tuberculosis and viral hepatitis, with poorer outcomes. Early diagnosis and management can reduce morbidity, mortality and onward transmission. This systematic review summarises prevalence of HIV, latent and active tuberculosis and hepatitis B and C among UK migrants and evaluates associated risk factors.
METHODS: PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched from 2004 to 11 June 2025. The review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines and registered with PROSPERO (registration

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: HIV-infected injection drugs users (IDUs) are known to have high rates of co-infections. A few reports exist on comorbidities among HIV-infected IDUs in India. We carried out a retrospective study to analyse data on comorbidities in India and treatment challenges faced when treating HIV-infected IDUs in India.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 118 HIV-infected IDUs who accessed care at the YRG Centre for Substance Abuse-Related Research, Chennai, between August 2005 and February 2006 was done. Demographic, laboratory and clinical information was extracted from m

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a critical global public health challenge, requiring therapeutic strategies that ensure high cure rates while minimizing bacillary transmission. The 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) update for drug-resistant TB treatment prioritized a novel, 6-month, all-oral regimen composed of bedaquiline, pretomanid, linezolid, and moxifloxacin (BPaLM) as the preferred treatment for rifampicin- and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (RR-/MDR-TB). However, the clinical success of this shortened therapy is intrinsically linked to managing complex drug-drug interactions and treatmen

A previously healthy, now 42-year-old man suddenly fell ill with bouts of septic fever up to 39.5 degrees C, sweats and weight loss without any demonstrable organ involvement. Physical examination on hospitalization 3 weeks after onset of the illness was unremarkable. Blood sedimentation rate at one hour was 123 mm. There was also a moderate increase in gamma-GT and alkaline phosphatase. Routine bacteriological and serological tests failed to discover a causative microorganism. After imaging tests had provided first indication of splenic and hepatic involvement, biopsies of these two organs de

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), HIV and hepatitis B in the UK asylum seeker and refugee population is currently uncertain.
METHODS: Systematic review of published and unpublished studies.
RESULTS: Five studies met the inclusion criteria. Three studies reported the prevalence of TB with rates ranging from 1.33 to 10.42 per 1000. The three studies reporting hepatitis B estimated rates from 57 to 118 per 1000. One study reported a prevalence rate for HIV of 38.19 per 1000.
CONCLUSION: A small number of studies have been identified reporting prevalen

BACKGROUND: China is the most populous country globally and has made significant achievements in the control of infectious diseases over the last decades. The 2003 SARS epidemic triggered the initiation of the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP). Since then, numerous studies have investigated the epidemiological features and trends of individual infectious diseases in China; however, few considered the changing spatiotemporal trends and seasonality of these infectious diseases over time.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically review the spatiotemporal tr

The efficacy of isoniazid (INH) prophylaxis in renal allograft recipients who are on long-term immunosuppression in a region highly prevalent for tuberculosis (TB) was studied. INH (300 mg/d in patients weighing more than 35 kg and 5 mg/kg/d in patients with <35 kg body weight) together with Pyridoxine 50 mg/d for 1 year was started in randomly assigned renal allograft recipients. Occurrence of clinical tuberculosis during the initial 2 years posttransplantation was observed in the risk group and patients at no risk. Risks were defined as acute rejection episodes and exposure to antirejection

During the routine care of patients, pulmonary and critical care specialist may have significant exposure to respiratory infections and potentially infectious body fluids such as blood and pleural fluid. Bronchoscopy and intensive care services often require close contact with patients and the use of sharp devices required for intravascular catheterization. Rendering such care places physicians at risk for acquiring agents such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis viruses, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. As of December 1998, 188 cases of occupational transmission of HIV to health c

Diabetes is increasing rapidly across Africa, where individuals in low-income areas are found to develop the disease at younger ages and lower body mass indices than those in high-income regions. Traditional metabolic risk factors explain only part of this trend, prompting growing interest in the role of chronic infections as contributors to dysglycemia. Persistent exposure to pathogens such as HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis C virus, Helicobacter pylori, periodontal bacteria, cytomegalovirus, and parasitic organisms remains widespread in the region. These infections may influence glucose metabol

PURPOSE: Intravenous drug users (IVDUs) often encounter barriers to primary care. To improve access, we developed a primary care clinic--Central Medical Unit (CMU)--for substance abusers in drug treatment. We report outcomes for services offered to IVDUs with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During 1990, 24% (120 of 509) of IVDUs eligible for CMU were HIV positive. Diagnostic therapeutic and preventive goals for IVDUs with HIV infection were evaluated for acceptance and compliance by chart review for these 120 patients.
RESULTS: On admission, 65% (78 of 120

INTRODUCTION:: Notifiable diseases (NDs) encompass conditions of high clinical severity and/or contagious. Being closed communities, long-term care facilities (LTCF) are places that deserve attention on their own, but one might be left wondering: what is the reality of NDs at Brazilian LTCFs?
OBJECTIVE:: To determine the prevalence and type of NDs at large LTCF.
METHOD:: Active search for NDs conducted by the Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC) in 459 beds. Due to the low turnover of patients, the monthly list kept by the HICC on NDs was analyzed. Data were grouped into males and fem

A 33-year-old Thai born woman was referred to our tertiary referral hospital with back and epigastric pain. Investigations included abdominal ultrasound and CT scan of the abdomen which demonstrated a 3 cm cystic lesion in the head of the pancreas, most likely a mucinous cystadenoma. Because of its malignant potential resection was advised. During surgical exploration, the tumour appeared unresectable, due to involvement of the common hepatic artery. PCR on biopsy revealed Mycobacterium tuberculosis The patient was referred to an infectious disease specialist, and a full recovery was achieved
