PURPOSE: There are few papers in the literature comparing outcomes between antero-posterior and posterior-only approaches for treating thoracolumbar tuberculosis (T10–L2) in children.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 47 children who were diagnosed and treated as thoracolumbar tuberculosis (T10–L2) in our department from January 2005 to June 2009. Forty-seven cases of thoracolumbar tuberculosis were treated by two different surgical approaches. All the cases were divided into two groups: 25 cases in group A underwent one-stage posterior debridement, transforaminal fusion, and in

Tuberculous paraplegia in pregnancy is reported to be rare. Paraplegia due to tuberculosis has a good prognosis if surgical decompression and stabilisation are done early together with chemotherapy. Vaginal delivery is not contraindicated in pregnancy complicated by paraplegia, but is associated with problems related to the initiation and progression of labour. Performing spinal nursing on an unstable spine with a rapidly enlarging gravid uterus in the third trimester of pregnancy poses a significant challenge. We report successful simultaneous Caesarean section and surgical treatment of a par

BACKGROUND: Fungal spondylitis often occurs in patients with immune dysfunction, and its diagnosis and treatment pose certain challenges. However, even in immunocompromised patients, Aspergillus spondylitis remains rare. This case reports the diagnostic and therapeutic experience of fungal spondylitis in a patient with consolidated cirrhosis and no significant immune impairment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old agricultural worker had chest and back pain for 6 months. The patient's pain was a persistent dull ache that worsened with chronic coughing and postural changes and decreased when he w

Primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma arising from the spine is exceedingly rare. Spinal cord compression can be the first presentation of a patient with primary spinal non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Due to its rarity and vague clinical presentation, the diagnosis can be confused with tuberculosis of the spine, a more common disease in this country. We present a case of primary thoracic spine B-cell lymphoma in a 45-year-old lady who presented with spinal cord compression. This case highlights the importance of obtaining histopathological samples for examination and the treating physician should be vigilant on

To understand better the prevalence, distribution and major causes of sagittal spinal deformity in a rural homeland, the authors conducted a study of angular kyphosis in the spines of 2,329 Transkei patients. Thirty-one (1.33%) had angular kyphosis. Lateral chest radiographs were obtained from 22 of these patients. Radiographic kyphotic angles ranged from 28 degrees to 130 degrees (mean: 70.3 +/- 7.6). The vast majority (81%) demonstrated classical clinical and/or radiographic findings of tuberculous aetiology. Less frequent aetiologies included fractures (2), osteoporosis (1), congenital malf

Two young children suffering from acute thoracic kyphosis due to vertebral tuberculosis (Pott's disease) are described. One patient presented with recent onset spastic paraplegia due to cord compression. Anterior decompression and stabilization with a vascularized rib strut graft was performed in both patients. The neurological recovery in the compromised patient was remarkable; spinal stability was achieved in both patients, thus avoiding the necessity for a posterior spinal fusion.

BACKGROUND: The development of thoracic surgical techniques has provided a new avenue for treating thoracic tuberculosis. Moreover, microscopic treatment of spinal tuberculosis has attracted increasing attention, as it affords good visual access and reduces trauma. Traditional thoracoscopic treatment of spinal tuberculosis usually requires 2-3 passages, accompanied by a corresponding number of incisions. With a large number of conventional thoracoscopic surgeries performed, improved resolution of the microscopic field of view, effective hemostasis of the peripheral vessels using the ultrasonic

OBJECTIVE: We present the case of a 26-year-old male with severe spinal tuberculosis of the thoracolumbar region. The patient suffered from worsening back pain over five years, initially responding to over-the-counter analgesics. Despite being proposed surgery in 2019, the patient refused the intervention and subsequently experienced significant disease progression.
METHODS: Upon re-presentation in 2022, mild involvement of the T12-L1 vertebrae was recorded by imaging, leading to a percutaneous needle biopsy which confirmed tuberculosis. Despite undergoing anti-tuberculous therapy for one yea

The proposed protocol for postoperative motor rehabilitation of children with tuberculous spondylitis complicated by severe neurological disorders is based on the procedures developed by the authors to induce spinal locomotor activity. The developed algorithm of motor rehabilitation of spinal patients involves separate restoration of gait components (rhythmic stereotypic walking (spinal locomotion), maintenance of a standing posture and voluntary control over the movements ensuring gait. The stages of motor rehabilitation were defined by taking into account these factors and a child's neurolog

A 61-year-old woman who was negative for type 1 human immunodeficiency virus developed vertebral osteomyelitis and skin lesions due to sepsis by Staphylococcus aureus. Microscopic examination of the skin showed alcohol-resistant acid-fast bacilli. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for Mycobacterium tuberculosis was positive for skin and spinal samples, although the cultures were negative. The diagnosis of M. tuberculosis infection is difficult, particularly when the disease is extrapulmonary. Rapid diagnostic tests that use PCR identify the DNA of the bacillus with greater sensitivity th

The number of intravenous (IV) drug abusers has been increasing in recent years. They are generally younger and healthier than the typical patient with a spinal infection. Reviewing the English language literature, there are only a few articles discussing the relationship between IV drug abuse and spinal infection. We studied 21 IV drug abusers with spinal infection. All were male, 19 were in their 30s and 40s with a mean age of 44 years. The mean follow-up period was 41 months after surgical intervention. Mild and severe neurologic deficit were seen in 5 and 13 patients (Frankel Grade C in 5,
