Maternal personality traits and risk of preterm birth and fetal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Maternal personality may increase vulnerability to stress, which could lead to an unfavourable intrauterine environment to the fetus. We sought to investigate the impact of maternal personality traits on adverse birth outcomes such as preterm birth, and fetal growth restriction in the mother-child cohort study (RHEA Study) in Crete, Greece 2007-2009. METHODS: Five hundred and eighty pregnant women participating in "Rhea" cohort study completed the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R) at 28-32 weeks of gestation. Information on anthropometric measures at birth was

Adverse outcomes following psychedelic use in adolescents and adults: associations with age and personality traits.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are increasingly using classical psychedelics, yet little is known about how psychedelics use is related to their mental health. Emerging evidence suggests that adolescents may be more vulnerable to adverse outcomes in relation to psychedelic use compared to adults. This descriptive and exploratory study examined differences between adolescents and adults in reported psychedelic experiences, with a focus on adverse outcomes and the potential role of personality traits. METHODS: Data were drawn from a community sample (N = 1185), in which participants retrospectively rep

Multidimensional classification of affective disorders.

Research data on biological markers, clinical presentation and course of affective disorders justify proposal of a new multidimensional classification of these disorders. The classification is made according to six parameters: clinical picture, severity, course, duration of episodes and lucid intervals, etiology and premorbid personality. The clinical picture defines the predominant syndrome types and subtypes. The severity of the disease is graded as mild, moderate and severe. The course type includes two subgroups: unipolar and bipolar. The fourth parameter gives the duration of the episodes

Association between personality traits, dental caries, and oral health-related behaviors among underserved Egyptian adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The Big Five personality traits comprise five broad dimensions of personality namely openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism which may influence oral health. Examining these influences in underserved communities helps inform the design of tailored oral disease prevention strategies. This study assessed the association between personality traits on one hand and dental caries as well as oral health behaviors on the other hand, among underserved Egyptian adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three governorates (Alexa

Gender differences in the relationship between hostility and the type A behavior pattern.

A group of 97 male and 111 female undergraduates completed the Jenkins Activity Survey, the Framingham Type A Scale, the Adjective Checklist Type A Scale, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. A factor analysis revealed three dimensions: Anger-Emotionality, Anger-Aggression, and Residual Pattern A. All Type A measures loaded highly on the Type A factor, with the Jenkins Activity Survey loading the highest. The Framingham Type A Scale was related to Anger-Emotionality, the Adjective Checklist Type A Scale was related to Anger-Aggression, and the

Familial frontotemporal dementia with a P301L tau mutation in Japan.

We have reported the family line with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in Japan. This family line has so far included four patients. Patient II-1 (man) had a 10 year history of slowly progressive personality and behavioral changes and died at the age of 56. His neuropathological examination showed severe atrophy of the bilateral frontal and temporal cortices with neuronal loss, gliosis and superficial spongiosis. Pick bodies were not found. The neuropathological diagnosis was atypical Pick's disease without Pick bodies or Pick-type in FTD. Patient III-2 is patient II-1's oldest daughter and was t

Predictors of health-related quality of life in outpatients with coronary heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important treatment target in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and is associated with poor outcomes. Therefore, it is of clinical importance to identify the key determinants of HRQoL among these patients. There is, however, limited knowledge of how a comprehensive set of psychosocial factors influence HRQoL. We aimed to determine the relative associations of clinical and psychosocial factors with mental and physical components of HRQoL in a sample of CHD outpatients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,042 patient

Adverse childhood experiences and personality traits associate with excessive fatigue in Norwegian nurses.

INTRODUCTION: Nurse fatigue may cause medical errors, absence and turnover. Prior research has largely emphasized modifiable factors like work schedules. This focus may overlook non‑modifiable individual factors that also meaningfully contribute to fatigue risk. This study therefore aimed to investigate the relationship between potentially non-modifiable factors and excessive fatigue in nurses. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study investigated adverse childhood experiences and personality traits in relation to excessive fatigue in nurses. Adverse childhood experiences were assessed with fo

[Neuropsychological sequelae after electric accidents].

No investigations have been found in the literature which document how many individuals develop neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric dysfunctions following electric shock. Three cases are reviewed in this article where patients developed neuropsychological dysfunction after electric accidents. The first case report describes a man who developed an amnestic syndrome followed by personality changes and diffuse anxiety after an electric accident. The two other case reports are comparable to the post-concussional syndrome. The patients had difficulty in concentration, psychosomatic symptoms and

Longitudinal associations among the Big Five personality traits and healthcare utilization in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: One critical component of individual and public health is healthcare utilization, or the extent to which individuals have routine check-ups, schedule treatments, or use emergency services. However, we know little about who uses healthcare services and what types, the conditions that exacerbate utilization, or the factors that explain why people seek out services. The present study fills these gaps in the literature by investigating the role of personality factors in predicting various forms of healthcare utilization, how these associations vary by age, socioeconomic resources, and c

Cigarette smoking, alcohol, and oral contraceptive use by type A adolescent--the Bogalusa Heart Study.

Type A behavior pattern (TABP) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) disease and is characterized by hostile, aggressive, competitive behavior. TABP characteristics and CV risk factors have been found in children and adolescents. TABP has been correlated with adult alcohol consumption, but studies associating Type A and smoking are mixed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the smoking, alcohol use, and oral contraceptive use of Type A children and adolescents. The Hunter-Wolf Type A scale and a health habits questionnaire were evaluated for 2092 children, ages 8-17 yea

Psychogenic pain and psychological variables: a psychometric study.

A sample of 41 women suffering from psychogenic pain according to DSM-III diagnostic criteria were psychometrically studied, in order to ascertain if they showed specific psychological traits or mechanisms. Type A behavior, extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism and dissimulation and hostility-aggressivity traits were the psychological variables studied both in the pain sample and in a matched control group. Psychogenic pain patients were significantly more neurotic and suspicious and less physically aggressive than healthy subjects and also scored significantly higher in dissimulation, which

[The concept of hyperthymia].

The article reviews the conceptual history of "hyperthymia". Since K. W. Stark had used this term in the early 19(th) century, it has developed in two different directions: (1) to delineate a psychopathological syndrome and (2) to define a type of personality disorder (psychopathy). As Kurt Schneider's personality disorder (psychopathy) concept was easily understood and highly practicable, it became influential during the 20(th) century. Earlier before, psychiatrists such as E. Mendel, C. Wernicke and C. G. Jung had described entities such as "chronic mania", "hypomania" or "sanguinic degenera

An aetiological model of non-melancholic depression: study design and validity of the measures.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to describe an approach to sub-typing non-melancholic depression and to determine which raters from a variety of backgrounds provided the most valid information on study variables. METHOD: A sample of non-melancholic depressed patients is described. Multiple raters (i.e. patients, psychiatrists, referrers and corroborative witnesses) completed measures of the patient's trait anxiety levels, severity of recent life event stressors and personality functioning. RESULTS: The study and representative data are reported. Congruence between several measures employ

[Examination of the significance of psychological factors in the etiology of alopecia areata. I. Examining Type A behavior].

We tested the significance of psychic factors in the etiology of alopecia areata by means of the assessment of the Behaviour Pattern A (BPA)--a particular way of regulation of the relations between the individual and the environment, the basis of which is a great need for achievement in the individual who realizes this need by means of domination and aggressiveness. The testing was carried out by means of the Polish Questionnaire for the Assessment of the Behaviour Pattern A in adults. 60 patients were tested (31 women and 29 men). The results were compared with the normative groups described

Type A behavior pattern: new perspectives on theory, assessment, and intervention.

Research on the Type A behavior pattern (TA) has been plagued by inadequate theory, insensitive assessment, and insufficient interventions. These problems (e.g., using global dichotomous ratings of TA) have contributed to several failures of TA to predict cardiovascular outcomes prompting concern for new approaches. Conceptual models are discussed, such as a transactional model of TA, social cognitive theories (e.g., self-evaluative processes), and associative network theory (e.g., how emotions distort information). The view of hostility as the only pathogenic feature of TA is questioned. The

Cortisol excretion in high and low cynically hostile men.

Cynical hostility as measured by the Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale has been found in some studies to be associated with increased risk of life-threatening illness. Previous laboratory studies of cardiovascular reactivity have been consistent with the general hypothesis that increased physiological responsiveness is one possible mechanism underlying the association between hostility and health. The present study extended this previous research by evaluating urinary cortisol excretion during routine daily activities in a sample of high and low cynically hostile young men. Although high an
