Importance of medicine quality in achieving universal health coverage.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the importance of ensuring medicine quality in order to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). METHODS: We developed a systems map connecting medicines quality assurance systems with UHC goals to illustrate the ensuing impact of quality-assured medicines in the implementation of UHC. The association between UHC and medicine quality was further examined in the context of essential medicines in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by analyzing data on reported prevalence of substandard and falsified essential medicines and established indicators for UHC. Finally, we e

[Sleep and academic performance in university students: a systematic review].

INTRODUCTION: University students tend to suffer from problems of sleep regularity, quantity and quality, which can affect their academic performance. These problems are related to changes typical of the phase of the life cycle in which they find themselves due to maturational, psychosocial development (associated with the processes of individuation and socialisation) and academic factors. The study of the relationship between sleep and academic performance in university students is an area of research of growing interest, which has started to be studied over the last two decades. AIM: To con

Universal Molecular Triggers of Stress Responses in Cyanobacterium Synechocystis.

Systemic analysis of stress-induced transcription in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 identifies a number of genes as being induced in response to most abiotic stressors (heat, osmotic, saline, acid stress, strong light, and ultraviolet radiation). Genes for heat-shock proteins (HSPs) are activated by all these stresses and form a group that universally responds to all environmental changes. The functions of universal triggers of stress responses in cyanobacteria can be performed by reactive oxygen species (ROS), in particular H2O2, as well as changes in the redox potential

Blue Light Is a Universal Signal for Escherichia coli Chemoreceptors.

Blue light has been shown to elicit a tumbling response in Escherichia coli, a nonphototrophic bacterium. The exact mechanism of this phototactic response is still unknown. Here, we quantify phototaxis in E. coli by analyzing single-cell trajectories in populations of free-swimming bacteria before and after light exposure. Bacterial strains expressing only one type of chemoreceptor reveal that all five E. coli receptors (Aer, Tar, Tsr, Tap, and Trg) are capable of mediating responses to light. In particular, light exposure elicits a running response in the Tap-only strain, the opposite of the

Universal Genetic Testing for All Breast Cancer Patients.

Women with pathogenic BRCA1/2 mutations are more likely to develop breast cancer than are women without the mutation and they typically develop cancer at an earlier age. If women are aware of their BRCA1/2 status, however, they can make timely decisions about preventive measures such as chemoprevention with hormonal agents or undergoing prophylactic surgery, all of which have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and overall mortality. The US Preventive Services Task Force and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network have recommended that women with a family history of breast, ovarian, and

Case study: Managing a meningococcal B outbreak at a university.

During the end of March and early April 2017, three University of Surrey students were confirmed as having contracted meningococcal B. The three cases were declared a cluster by Public Health England (PHE) and led to an urgent multi-agency response to protect 4,296 students in university residences identified as being at risk. This case study shows how the university had to arrange and communicate the need for two separate vaccinations, four weeks apart to more than 4,200 students. This timescale meant overlapping with examinations, and had to be complete before students went home for the summ

Prescription opioid medication misuse among university students.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prescription opioid misuse is an established problem in the United States. Less information is known regarding the clinical and cognitive characteristics of prescription opioid misusers, specifically in a college age population. This study sought to characterize individuals who misuse prescription opioids and the differences between current, past and non-misusers. METHODS: A 156-item survey was administered to over 9,449 university students at a large, public Midwestern university. Survey questions obtained demographic information, self-reported grade point average,
