Urolithiasis is a highly prevalent condition influenced by environmental, dietary, and genetic factors. Recurrent unilateral stone formation raises the question of whether localized renal metabolic abnormalities contribute to lithogenesis. Conventional 24-hour urine analyses provide a global assessment of urinary solutes and may overlook kidney-specific differences. The objective of this study was to determine whether distinct urinary chemistry differences exist between stone-bearing and contralateral kidneys in patients with recurrent unilateral urolithiasis. This monocentric prospective stud…

OBJECTIVES: Although renal colic is a well-known acute manifestation of urolithiasis, the relationship between its pain severity and a range of clinical parameters has not been clearly established by comprehensive studies. This study aimed to construct and validate a simple and accurate clinical nomogram for predicting the occurrence of more intense acute renal colic (ARC) in patients with urolithiasis.
METHODS: The development and validation of the prediction model followed the reporting standards outlined in the TRIPOD checklist. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 285 patients who vi…

Urolithiasis is a common complication in patients with hypouricemia. Using a microarea x-ray diffractometer and nanoflow liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) following SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), recurrent urinary calculi complicating a hypouricemic patient were analyzed. Analysis with the microarea x-ray diffractometer showed that one of the calculi was composed of calcium oxalate monohydrate and hydroxyapatite. The other was found to be formed from calcium oxalate dihydrate. After determination with LC-MS, both were found to contain uromodulin, albumin, osteopon…

Fornical ruptures, also known as calyceal ruptures, are a rare sequela of obstructive uropathy in most cases. This pathology can present with similar symptoms to urolithiasis, such as costovertebral tenderness, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment of forniceal ruptures can vary based on the individual clinical presentation. It may be conservative with hydration, intravenous antibiotics, and pain control. It can also involve more invasive interventions such as stent placement, nephrostomy tube placement, and fluid aspiration. We present a patient with no history of urolithiasis, trau…

Background: Cross-fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is a rare congenital anomaly in which an ectopic kidney crosses the midline and merges with the orthotopic kidney on the other side. Patients with CFRE could present with urolithiasis. The abnormal anatomy and the lack of consensus to treat urolithiasis in these cases present challenges to treatment. In this study, we present a case of renal stone in a CFRE managed through percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Case Presentation: We present a case of a 59-year-old man with right flank pain. Radiologic studies showed a 2 cm renal pelvis stone in a CFRE…

The aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between urolithiasis and pattern of fertility among women as indicated by the age at first pregnancy, the number of pregnancies and the use of contraceptive pills as well as to determine the lateralization of stone. The study was conducted on 250 female patients suffering from urinary stones and a similar number of control randomly selected from the same hospital. Data were obtained by an interviewing questionnaire. The study demonstrated that the mean number of pregnancies of cases is significantly higher than that of control (t = 3.5797). H…

Nonfunctioning cysts were revealed in 2 of 23 patients with pathology of the parathyroid glands only. There was an expressed clinical picture of primary hyperparathyroidism in two patients with carcinoma, 3 with hyperplasia, and in 16 cases with adenoma of the parathyroid glands. Extraosseous manifestations were chiefly noted in the patients with adenoma of the parathyroid glands (in 7 of 16). In many cases they were the first, and in some the only manifestations of the disease. In two cases the disease coursed as a persistently relapsing urolithiasis (the patients had had nephrectomy), in fou…

Based on the prevalence of asymptomatic kidney stones (5% in our general ward, in accordance with the literature) the value of abdominal ultrasonography in the clinical assessment of a suspected kidney-colic is discussed. The eminent importance of the stone-analysis is emphasized. In addition, the most common causes of kidney stone formation (low urine output, mechanical urinary obstruction in the renal pelvis, hypercalciuria, hyperoxaluria, insufficient urinary citric acid excretion, hyperuricosuria) are highlighted. The cardinal symptom of the urolithiasis is the presence of micro/macrohemat…

PURPOSE: After complex reconstruction, bladder exstrophy requires unique considerations for long-term surveillance that may arise through the natural history of the condition. A known long-term risk in exstrophy patients is urolithiasis which is a challenge to both treat, and prevent. The authors sought to provide an updated review on the management, prevention, and available interventions in the exstrophy patient population.
METHODS: A literature review was performed through PubMed database, maintained by the United States National Library of Medicine (USNLM) at the National Institutes of He…

PURPOSE: Urolithiasis, a condition affecting approximately 10% of the global population, is primarily treated with Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) and endoscopic methods. However, SWL's high-pressure pulses can cause tissue injury, often necessitates some level of anaesthesia, and may require repeated sessions or ancillary treatment to achieve stone free status. Burst Wave Lithotripsy (BWL) emerges as a promising alternative, utilizing multi-cycle, ultrasound bursts at lower pressure amplitude to fragment stones, while minimizing cavitation under real-time imaging in a portable manner.

Kidney stones, like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus, affect a large number of people. Patients suffer from acute pain, repeated hospitalizations and associated secondary diseases, such as arterial hypertension and renal insufficiency. This results in considerable costs for the society and its health care system. The recurrence rate is as high as 50%. The registry for RECurrent URolithiasis (RECUR) aims to fill existing evidence gaps. The prospective and longitudinal RECUR registry is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF). It is based on the digital infrast…
