Risk factors for third-degree and fourth-degree perineal lacerations in forceps and vacuum deliveries.

Third- and fourth-degree perineal lacerations occur frequently during operative vaginal deliveries. To identify risk factors for lacerations, 2832 consecutive forceps and vacuum extraction deliveries were analyzed. Third- and fourth-degree lacerations occurred in 30% of deliveries. Multiple logistic regression was used to control for intercorrelation between potential risk factors. Factors associated with increased risk for third- and fourth-degree lacerations were midline episiotomy, nulliparity, second-stage arrest, occipitoposterior position, low or mid station, use of forceps instead of va…

Degenerative lumbar disk disease: pitfalls and usefulness of MR imaging in detection of vacuum phenomenon.

Magnetic resonance (MR) images of the lumbar spine from 150 patients were retrospectively reviewed. In 14 of these patients, at 18 disk levels, a vacuum phenomenon (VP) had been identified on plain radiographs and/or computed tomographic scans. The MR imaging appearance of these gas collections in 17 disks was an area without signal, best seen on spin-echo sequences with short repetition time and echo time in the sagittal view. MR imaging precisely located the VP in the anulus fibrosus, the nucleus pulposus, and Schmorl nodes. In all but one case, degeneration of the disk was complete and asso…

Early outcomes of transcatheter vacuum-assisted mass extraction in the left heart and the aortic arch.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter vacuum-assisted mass extraction (TVME) in the systemic circulation is increasingly being reported. However, its feasibility, effectiveness, and safety remain poorly defined. AIMS: We sought to investigate the feasibility, effectiveness and safety of TVME in the left heart and aortic arch. METHODS: Consecutive patients from 6 centres in the United States and Canada were included. Feasibility was defined as technically successful mass extraction without unplanned cardiac surgery or intraprocedural mortality. The effectiveness endpoint was feasibility with successful d…

Simultaneous detection of multiple viral pathogens in vacuumed dust from different building types.

Environmental monitoring of viral pathogens will be a critical tool to prevent morbidity and mortality in future pandemics and yearly disease cycles. One approach in early stages of utilization is monitoring viruses from building dust. To date, these efforts have primarily used PCR-based methods to target individual viruses. Additional methods that can identify multiple viruses simultaneously, and in a semi-quantitative manner, would increase the efficiency and utility of these efforts. The goal of this project was to evaluate a whole-genome, hybrid-capture based high-throughput sequencing app

The Swab, the Drip, or the Meat? Comparison of Microbiological Sampling Methods in Vacuum-Packed Raw Beef.

Historically, there has been a concern for the detection and enumeration of microorganisms in foods, and numerous methods have been developed to determine their microbiological conditions. The present study aimed to compare the numbers of microbes recovered with three sampling methods: drip, excision, and swabbing in vacuum-packed beef. The sampling methods were evaluated in terms of the viable numbers of Enterobacteriaceae, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Brochrothrix thermosphacta, Salmonella spp., and yeasts and moulds (Y&M). The numbers of B. thermosphacta, Salmonella spp., Enterobacteriaceae,…

Microbial succession and interaction in vacuum-packed beef: a longitudinal study of bacterial and fungal dynamics.

The microbial dynamics of vacuum-packed (VP) beef are shaped by interactions between bacterial and fungal communities, influencing spoilage and meat quality during storage. While bacterial succession is well studied, fungal roles remain underexplored. We examined microbial communities in VP beef over 85 days using spike-in, qPCR, 16S/18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, culture-based methods, whole genome sequencing, and co-culture experiments. Initially dominated by Pseudomonas and Brochothrix, the bacterial community shifted toward lactic acid bacteria (LAB) by day 15. Fungal communities remai…

Photocatalytic Oxidation of Benzene to Phenol with O2 over WO3 Treated by Vacuum-Sealed Annealing.

Photocatalytic oxidation of benzene to phenol using molecular O2 is one of the most promising sustainable approaches for the green synthesis of phenol. Introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs) on semiconductor surfaces by defect engineering is a promising strategy to enhance the efficiency of benzene oxidation to produce phenol due to the unique functions of OVs in facilitating the charge separation and activation of molecular O2. Herein, a vacuum-sealed annealing strategy has been well developed to generate abundant surface OVs on semiconductors, such as WO3. The well-sealed quartz vial creates a w…

Utility of manual vacuum aspiration followed by curettage in the treating hydatidiform mole: A retrospective analysis.

AIM: While manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is commonly employed for early first-trimester abortions, its effectiveness in treating hydatidiform mole is still unclear. This study sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MVA in comparison to dilation and curettage (D&C) for managing hydatidiform mole. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of medical records for 198 patients with hydatidiform mole treated at Nagoya University Hospital between 2004 and 2023. After excluding cases with incomplete data, we compared 106 patients who underwent D&C with 60 patients treated with MVA followed…

Separation and Detection of Charged Unilamellar Vesicles in Vacuum by a Frequency-Controlled Quadrupole Mass Sensor.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membranous particles released by cells and are considered to be promising sources of biomarkers for various … a water sample. Lipid vesicles were positively charged with nanoelectrospray and transferred into a vacuum using two wide m/z-range frequency-controlled quadrupoles. The m/z, charges, and masses of individual vesicles were obtained by the nondestructive single-pass charge detector. The resolving mode of the second quadrupole with m/z RSD < 10% allowed to …

Could alteration in the vacuum phenomenon rather than its presence be a sign of spinal instability?

PURPOSE: The intradiscal vacuum phenomenon (VP) has traditionally been regarded as a radiologic indicator of segmental instability. However, its direct relationship with postoperative spinal fusion outcomes and mechanical complications remains inadequately understood. This study aimed to investigate whether changes in the natural course of intradiscal and intrafacet VP influence clinical and mechanical outcomes following lumbar fusion surgery. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included consecutive patients who underwent lumbar fusion surgery for degenerative spinal disorders at a terti…

Risk of cervical laceration in forceps vs vacuum delivery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical laceration is an obstetric injury associated with severe postpartum hemorrhage and subsequent spontaneous preterm birth. While operative vaginal delivery is a known risk factor for cervical laceration, it is unclear whether forceps and vacuum deliveries incur the same risk. The aim of this systematic review was to compare the risk of cervical laceration between operative instruments (forceps vs vacuum). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medline, Embase, Global Health, CENTRAL, Emcare, and Web of Science were searched from inception until August 2024 with terms related to operative …

Efficacy and Safety of "Vacuum Swallowing" Based on a Strong Negative Esophageal Pressure in Healthy Individuals.

Vacuum swallowing is a unique method for improving the pharyngeal passage of a bolus by creating subatmospheric negative pressure in the esophagus. However, whether healthy individuals and other patients with dysphagia can reproduce vacuum swallowing remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether healthy individuals verified using high-resolution manometry (HRM) could reproduce vacuum swallowing and evaluate its safety using a swallowing and breathing monitoring system (SBMS). Two healthy individuals who mastered vacuum swallowing taught this method to 12 healthy individuals, w…
