Histological chorioamnionitis and its predictors among mothers with premature rupture of membranes delivering at tertiary hospitals in Uganda: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Histological chorioamnionitis (HCA) is a significant global threat to maternal and fetal health, with an increasing prevalence in resource-limited settings. However, data on its burden and predictors remain scarce in Africa, including Uganda. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of HCA among mothers with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) at three tertiary hospitals in Uganda. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted over a three-month period, from July to October 2023, at three tertiary hospitals in Uganda. A total of 106 women diagn

Spatial variations and determinants of iron containing foods consumption among 6-23 months old children in Ethiopia: spatial, and multilevel analysis.

Consuming foods high in iron benefits metabolic processes as well as the development of the neonatal and fetal brain. Despite the significance of eating foods high in iron for public health, Ethiopian practices are still limited when compared to the World Health Organization's (WHO) assessment of its consumption of such foods. This study used the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) to evaluate the consumption of iron-rich foods, regional clustering, and related characteristics among children aged 6-23 months. The information was taken from the typical EDHS 2019 dataset, which include

Cesarean delivery in a tertiary institution of the Republic of Moldova: analysis using the Robson classification.

BACKGROUND: The worldwide increase in the cesarean delivery rate is a major public health concern and cause of significant debate. Although multiple studies have shown that higher cesarean delivery rates may be associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes, the number of cesarean deliveries has been continuously increasing. In the Republic of Moldova, cesarean delivery increased from 15.75% in 2012 to 27.42% in 2022. However, the perinatal mortality remained unchanged at 11.6%. To understand the factors that determine the increasing trend in cesarean delivery and to approach new stra

Does the saltatory pattern on cardiotocograph (CTG) trace really exist? The ZigZag pattern as an alternative definition and its correlation with perinatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The saltatory pattern (SP) has been defined by guidelines as a uniformly increased bandwidth of >25 beats per min lasting for 30 min. However, previous research suggest that it is very unusual to observe such a "uniform" increase in the bandwidth persisting for >30 min. Baseline fetal heart rate variability (FHRV) on cardiotocography reflects the integrity of the central nervous system. During labor, in the presence of a gradually-evolving hypoxia associated with the onset of metabolic acidosis, FHRV may be reduced. However, if a fetus is exposed to rapidly-evolving hypoxia, it may

Magnesium sulphate for women at risk of preterm birth for neuroprotection of the fetus.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium sulphate is a common therapy in perinatal care. Its benefits when given to women at risk of preterm birth for fetal neuroprotection (prevention of cerebral palsy for children) were shown in a 2009 Cochrane review. Internationally, use of magnesium sulphate for preterm cerebral palsy prevention is now recommended practice. As new randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and longer-term follow-up of prior RCTs have since been conducted, this review updates the previously published version. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of magnesium sulphate as a fetal neuro

Dietary vitamin A intakes among pregnant women attending antenatal care in health facilities in Dessie Town, North East Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A plays an important role in vision, cellular differentiation, embryonic development, reproduction, growth and the immune system. Women who live in developing countries face a risk of undernutrition during pregnancy as a result of poverty, poor diet quality and quantity, and a high fertility rate. This poor dietary problem could reflect the high risk of vitamin A deficiency in women. The present study aimed to determine the adequacy of vitamin A among pregnant women following antenatal care in health facilities of Dessie Town, Ethiopia, January 2017. METHODS: Health facili

Prevalence and Factors Associated With Depression Among Antenatal and Postnatal Women Attending Government Health Clinics in Selangor, Malaysia: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health concerns either during pregnancy or the postpartum period are a public health challenge. Depression, anxiety, and stress can lead to poorer outcomes in the antenatal and postpartum periods. There is evidence that the effect of stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy negatively affects fetal neurodevelopment and children's developmental outcomes. Early diagnosis can improve treatment outcomes and prevent negative impacts on the mother and baby. Identifying risk factors, such as age, socioeconomic status, mental health history, and family dysfunction,

RAPIDIRON Trial follow-up study - the RAPIDIRON-KIDS Study: protocol of a prospective observational follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a worldwide problem with iron deficiency being the most common cause. When anemia occurs in pregnancy, it increases the risk of adverse maternal, fetal, and postnatal outcomes. It induces preterm births and low birth weight (LBW) deliveries, long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae, and an increased risk of earlier onset of postnatal iron deficiency. Anemia rates are among the highest in South Asia, and India's National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) for 2019-2021 indicated that over half of pregnant women, and more than 65% of children, in the country are classified as anemi

[Factors associated to the coiling of umbilical cord: case-control study conducted in three hospitals in Yaoundé].

INTRODUCTION: The coiling of umbilical cord is the winding of the umbilical cord around a part of the fetal body once or several times. It is the most common abnormality of the cord, its prevalence varies according to the authors from 5.7% to 35.1%. In 2011, the rate of perinatal mortality due to the coiling of umbilical cord in Cameroun was 6.1%. However factors associated to it are little known in our context. Our purpose was to determine factors associated to the coiling of umbilical cord in three hospitals in Yaoundé. METHODS: We conducted an analytical case-control study in the Maternity
