OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of vibration (Vib) and hyaluronic acid (HA) on 3-dimensional cultured cartilage.
METHODS: Chondrocytes were obtained from metatarsophalangeal joints of freshly killed 6-month-old pigs. Twenty-four-well plates containing type I collagen sponge disks were used to culture samples. The objective was to use B-mode ultrasonography for assessing vascular walls of upper limbs main arteries in vibration disease patients. Imaging of the arterial walls revealed changes concerning increased intima-media complex (IMC). Ratio of IMC to vascular diameter was considerably higher in vibration disease patients--0.233 +/- 0.013 vs control value of 0.156 +/- 0.014 (p < 0.01). Vibration could result in destruction of some endothelial cells and significant release of endothelial growth factors.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) in 617 workers at a base metal mine in northern Ontario. Workers who were employed at the mine between the years 1989 and 1994 and who continued to live within a 100 km radius of the mine were sent a self-reported questionnaire to identify individuals with possible vibration-induced symptoms in their upper extremities. Although theoretical studies include a term for gas density in their mathematical descriptions of glottal aerodynamics, the effect of gas density on glottal vibration has not been examined empirically. Tinnitus due to otosclerosis may be caused by poor vibration of the inner ear fluids. The goal of this article is to suggest some explanations, to enhance future research work carried out by other authors on this important issue, and to show what are the results of surgery to relieve tinnitus in the author's experience. Only complete resolution of the tinnitus 1 year after surgery was taken into account in the assessment of the results.

The hand-arm vibration syndrome, widely known as vibration white finger, is a disorder of nerves and blood vessels that occurs in workers exposed to segmental vibration. A cross sectional symptom survey was performed on a sample of workers employed by a large shipyard in the north eastern United States. Influence of vibration and broad band noise on the nervous system of guinea pigs was studied. Changes in all parts of the nervous system were noted. The changes connected with disruption of metabolism, caused by disruption of microcirculation. A survey was therefore made of the nature, extent and severity of exposure to shock and vibration.
