Between 1968 and 1981, 25 patients with acute traumatic rupture of the aorta were treated at the University of Virginia. Twenty-two of these patients (88%) had serious concomitant injuries. Feathers are commonly used biomarkers of mercury (Hg) contamination in waterbird species. Most studies that analyze waterbird feathers for Hg content report concentrations on a per-unit mass basis. While this is appropriate for intraspecific comparisons, we suggest a more effective method for studies comparing multiple species of similar size and with similar foraging habits. We sought to identify the results achieved with lower extremity amputations performed by both community and university-based surgeons as well as from multiple disciplines (orthopedic/general/vascular surgeons) serving a predominantly nonurban population. A review of 411 consecutive patients undergoing 508 non-traumatic lower extremity amputations at Charleston Area Medical Center from January 1999 to December 2003 was conducted. Four patients had trichinosis after consuming raw home-butchered pork. The patients had fever, myalgias, periorbital edema, and conjunctivitis. All of the patients had nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (corresponding to the intestinal phase of the infection) seven to ten days before the onset of fever and myalgias. Laboratory findings included eosinophilia, elevated serum CPK and aldolase values, and seroconversion of Trichinella serology one month after onset of myalgias. The patients were treated with mebendazole and prednisone and recovered uneventfully.

Banked serum samples collected from an industry-wide serologic survey of eighteen Delmarva broiler flocks conducted in 1985 were evaluated for the presence of Cryptosporidium- specific antibodies in an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Over a 2 1/2-year period (January 1981 to June 1983), 177 Escherichia coli isolates were obtained from 145 field-reared broiler flocks in the Delmarva peninsula, and 20 were obtained from clinically normal day-old hatchery chickens representing an additional 17 flocks in Delmarva.
