[Disturbances of binocular vision in macular heterotopia].

BACKGROUND: Tractive translocation of the macula (secondary macular heterotopia) may result in disturbance of binocular vision. The report of a case shall discuss the sensorial problems of these patients. HISTORY AND SIGNS: We report of a 40-years old male who had decreased visual acuity and loss of binocular vision for several years due to episodes of uveitis with intravitreous hemorrhage and cataract formation. After bilateral vitrectomy and cataract extraction a good visual acuity was restored in both eyes. Postoperatively, the patient monocularly complained about disturbed egocentric loca

Pellucid corneal marginal degeneration: A review.

Pellucid marginal corneal degeneration (PMD) is a rare ectatic disorder which typically affects the inferior peripheral cornea in a crescentic fashion. The condition is most commonly found in males and usually appears between the 2nd and 5th decades of life affecting all ethnicities. The prevalence and aetiology of this disorder remain unknown. Ocular signs and symptoms of patients with PMD differ depending on the severity of the condition. Unless corneal topography is evaluated, early forms of PMD may often be undetected however, in the later stages PMD can often be misdiagnosed as keratoconu

Detection of congenital hypopituitary hypothyroidism: ten-year experience in the Northwest Regional Screening Program.

We examined the results of the Northwest Regional Screening Program (NWRSP) over its first 10 years to determine whether the detection of hypopituitary hypothyroidism is a justified advantage of the primary thyroxine (T4)-supplemental thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) screening strategy, and to determine whether all such infants will be detected by this screening approach. Between May 1975 and May 1985, the NWRSP screened 850,431 infants, detecting 192 infants with primary hypothyroidism (1:4429) and eight with hypopituitary hypothyroidism (1:106,304). In 11 additional infants, TSH deficiency,

Assessment of night vision problems in patients with congenital stationary night blindness.

Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB) is a retinal disorder caused by a signal transmission defect between photoreceptors and bipolar cells. CSNB can be subdivided in CSNB2 (rod signal transmission reduced) and CSNB1 (rod signal transmission absent). The present study is the first in which night vision problems are assessed in CSNB patients in a systematic way, with the purpose of improving rehabilitation for these patients. We assessed the night vision problems of 13 CSNB2 patients and 9 CSNB1 patients by means of a questionnaire on low luminance situations. We furthermore investigated

Vision and driving: Canada.

Supported by the findings of a major review of vision standards for driving in Canada, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society's Committee on Vision Standards for Driving issued a series of recommendations in 2000 to the Canadian Medical Association. Many of these recommendations, including changes in visual acuity and visual field standards and consideration for exceptional cases, have been implemented across Canada. Canadian courts have stated that it is important to provide on-road assessments for visually impaired individuals who wish to continue driving. Most Canadian provinces and territor

Rationale and design of the BeyeOMARKER study: prospective evaluation of blood- and eye-based biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer's disease pathology in the eye clinic.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common, complex and multifactorial disease that may require screening across multiple routes of referral to enable early detection and subsequent future implementation of tailored interventions. Blood- and eye-based biomarkers show promise as low-cost, scalable and patient-friendly tools for early AD detection given their ability to provide information on AD pathophysiological changes and manifestations in the retina, respectively. Eye clinics provide an intriguing real-world proof-of-concept setting to evaluate the performance of these potential AD sc

[Visual self-assessment with the ACTO test during follow-up of AMD patients after intravitreal injections].

INTRODUCTION: Monthly controls are necessary after injections of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to enable timely recognition of a renewed decrease in vision. However, these monthly control intervals are not realistic for many older patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and outpatient clinics often reach their logistical limits because of inadequate funding for the additional medical work. Against this background, we conceived the ACTO self-test as a novel screening method for patients to discover unnoticed visual changes outside the routinely scheduled ophthalmic exa

Novel Drug Screening Assay for Acanthamoeba castellanii and the Anti-Amoebic Effect of Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors.

Acanthamoeba castellanii is an amoeba that inhabits soil and water in every part of the world. Acanthamoeba infection of the eye causes keratitis and can lead to a loss of vision. Current treatment options are only moderately effective, have multiple harmful side effects, and are tedious. In our study, we developed a novel drug screening method to define the inhibitory properties of potential new drugs against A. castellanii in vitro. We found that the clinically used carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, acetazolamide, ethoxzolamide, and dorzolamide, have promising antiamoebic properties.

Transcription factors underlying photoreceptor diversity.

During development, retinal progenitors navigate a complex landscape of fate decisions to generate the major cell classes necessary for proper vision. Transcriptional regulation is critical to generate diversity within these major cell classes. Here, we aim to provide the resources and techniques required to identify transcription factors necessary to generate and maintain diversity in photoreceptor subtypes, which are critical for vision. First, we generate a key resource: a high-quality and deep transcriptomic profile of each photoreceptor subtype in adult zebrafish. We make this resource op
