Direct measurement of planar flow rate in an excised canine larynx model.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: During phonation, skewing of the glottal flow waveform (Q) refers to a phenomenon that occurs when the flow decelerates more rapidly than it accelerates. This skewing is clinically important because it increases the glottal efficiency, which is defined by the acoustic intensity (sound pressure level) divided by the subglottal pressure. Current theoretical models predict that the only mechanism to cause skewing of Q involves changes in the vocal tract inertance. The purpose of the current work is to show that other factors at the vocal fold level can also cause skewing of

The effect of unilateral arytenoid lateralization on rima glottidis area in canine cadaver larynges.

Five modifications of a cricoarytenoid lateralization and two modifications of a thyroarytenoid lateralization laryngoplasty technique were evaluated for their effect on rima glottidis area. All procedures and evaluations were performed on canine cadaver larynges. Cricoarytenoid lateralization (CAL) techniques provided a greater increase of the size of the glottic opening than did any of the thyroarytenoid lateralization techniques. Cricoarytenoid and interarytenoid disarticulation associated with CAL did not significantly increase glottic size compared with normal. After disarticulation of th

Laryngeal pacing as a treatment for vocal fold paralysis.

We summarize etiologies of vocal fold paralysis and current treatments. The recent literature involving electrical stimulation of the larynx is reviewed. Four canines were involved in a study to test a new laryngeal pacemaker system. This system was used to stimulate both the lateral cricoarytenoid and thyroarytenoid muscles. The data are taken from two of these canines. One of the goals was to stimulate the paralyzed side of the larynx based on the activity of the normal (nonparalyzed) side of the larynx. The best stimulation parameters for full addition of the paralyzed vocal cord were 3-7 V

Electrical stimulation of laryngeal muscle.

Most functional electrical stimulation (FES) research has focused on the spinal cord-injured patient whose muscles are paralyzed but still maintain their innervation. This article details the investigation of FES of the laryngeal muscles. In time, FES may become a useful treatment for bilateral vocal cord paralysis (BVCP) and for some laryngeal movement disorders.

The communicative content of the common marmoset phee call during antiphonal calling.

Vocalizations are a dominant means of communication for numerous species, including nonhuman primates. These acoustic signals are encoded with a rich array of information available to signal receivers that can be used to guide species-typical behaviors. In this study, we examined the communicative content of common marmoset phee calls, the species-typical long distance contact call, during antiphonal calling. This call type has a relatively stereotyped acoustic structure, consisting of a series of long tonal pulses. Analyses revealed that calls could be reliably classified based on the individ

Decoding of frequency-modulated sweeps by core and belt neurons in the alert macaque auditory cortex.

Acoustic stimuli where the spectrum is time-varying are ubiquitous in natural sounds, including animal vocalizations, human speech, and music. Early studies of such stimuli involving frequency-modulated sweeps reveal that neurons in the primary auditory cortex of a variety of mammals show differences in firing rates depending on either the direction of the sweep and/or the sweep velocity. Psychophysical studies have also shown that the perception of such time-varying stimulus parameters is quite acute, underscoring the importance of such signals in normal acoustic perception. The responses of

Maternal Experience-Dependent Cortical Plasticity in Mice Is Circuit- and Stimulus-Specific and Requires MECP2.

The neurodevelopmental disorder Rett syndrome is caused by mutations in the gene Mecp2 Misexpression of the protein MECP2 is thought to contribute to neuropathology by causing dysregulation of plasticity. Female heterozygous Mecp2 mutants (Mecp2het ) failed to acquire a learned maternal retrieval behavior when exposed to pups, an effect linked to disruption of parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory interneurons (PV) in the auditory cortex. Nevertheless, how dysregulated PV networks affect the neural activity dynamics that underlie auditory cortical plasticity during early maternal experience is unk

Apparent hallucinations in monkeys during around-the-clock amphetamine for seven to fourteen days. Possible relevance to amphetamine psychosis.

Schizophrenia-like symptoms have been experimentally produced in humans by a single, large dose of amphetamine or by relatively low level, but continuous administration of the drug. In animal studies of the psychotomimetic properties of amphetamine, high doses and, in particular, repeated daily-injection drug schedules have often been used. However, amphetamine psychosis is not always a prominent effect of repeated intake drug schedules in humans and available clinical evidence suggests that psychosis develops more readily when the drug is taken in a continuous fashion over longer periods. The

Phonatory effects of type I thyroplasty implant shape and depth of medialization in unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Medialization thyroplasty (MT) is commonly used to treat glottic insufficiency. In this study, we investigated the phonatory effects of MT implant medialization depth and medial surface shape. METHODS: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and vagal paralysis were simulated in an in vivo canine. A type 1 MT was performed using a silicone elastomer implant with variable medialization depths and medial surface shapes: rectangular, V-shaped, divergent, and convergent. The effects on phonation onset flow/pressure relationships and acoustics were measured. RESULTS: Increasing dep

Expression of fibroblast growth factor-2 in the nucleus ambiguus following recurrent laryngeal nerve injury in the rat.

OBJECTIVES: To examine fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) immunoreactivity in the nucleus ambiguus (NA) after three different recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injuries. STUDY DESIGN: Immunohistochemical analysis of FGF-2. METHODS: Thirty adult rats underwent left-sided RLN crush (group A). The left RLN was transected in groups B (n = 30) and C (n = 30); in group C, both nerve stumps were covered with silicone caps. FGF-2 in the NA was assessed as the ratio of the positive areas on the left (operated [O]) and right (unoperated [U]) sides. The ratio (O/U) was measured 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days a

Synchronous Activity in the Auditory Forebrain Represents Temporal Landmarks in Vocal Communication Signals.

Precise temporal segmentation of sound is critical for identifying and interpreting complex acoustic signals such as human speech (Pisoni and Luce, 1987) and bird song (Gentner, 2008). Using the zebra finch model system, we investigated the neural coding of the songs' temporal features. We recorded neural activity from avian primary and secondary auditory cortex-like brain areas using electrode arrays in awake birds (4 males and 3 females) exposed to conspecific songs. By applying a deep-learning approach with bidirectional long-short-term memory networks (Daly, 2023), we demonstrate that not

Representation and integration of auditory and visual stimuli in the primate ventral lateral prefrontal cortex.

Through the influence of Goldman-Rakic, much research has been focused on the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in spatial working memory, decision making, and saccade generation, whereas functions of other parts of the frontal lobe including the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) are less clear. Previous studies in non-human primates have shown that some VLPFC cells are selectively responsive to faces. Recent findings indicate that adjacent to the region where face- and object-selective cells have been recorded are neurons which respond to complex sounds including human and monk

Heterogeneous effects of maternal separation on the acoustic structure of mouse pup vocalizations.

Early life adversity is a major risk factor for the development of social and communicative impairment. Maternal separation (MS) has been studied in rodent models; however, its effects on the developmental trajectory of vocal communication remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of MS on ultrasonic vocalization (USVs) in ICR mice. Pups underwent 24 h of MS on Postnatal day (P) 4, and USVs were recorded on P4, P6, P8, P11, and P14. Each syllable was analyzed for duration, mean frequency, and coefficient of variation in frequency (cvfreq), which reflected the range of frequenc

Acute Effects of Hypothermia and Inhalant Anesthesia on Ultrasonic Vocalizations and Neuroendocrine Markers in Neonatal Rats.

Neonatal rodents undergo anesthesia for numerous procedures and for euthanasia by anesthetic overdose. However, data regarding whether neonatal anesthesia is humane are limited. Hypothermia (cryoanesthesia) is the most commonly used anesthetic protocol for neonatal rats 10 d of age or younger. However, hypothermia has recently been restricted in several countries due to perceived painful effects, including pain on rewarming. Minimizing the potential pain and distress of neonates in research is imperative, although very challenging. Traditional validated and nonvalidated behavioral and physiolo
