Active injury surveillance was conducted with a large, unionized workforce of residential and drywall carpenters over a 3-year period. Injured carpenters were interviewed by trained carpenter investigators and sites were visited where falls occurred. Qualitative information was collected on exposures, risk perception, training, and mentoring. Falls accounted for 20% of injuries. BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), compression of the median nerve at the wrist, is the most frequently encountered peripheral entrapment neuropathy. Whilst rates of all other work-related conditions have declined, the number of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (which include CTS) has not changed for the past 9 years in the USA. The use of impedance audiometry for determining hearing threshold and locating hearing impairments was investigated in 112 people exposed to occupational noise. Tympanometry and the stapedius reflex threshold measurements (ART) were made using Madsen ZO 2020 set. The following study is based on the evaluation of 116 expert opinions obtained between 1984 and 1987 regarding patients working as hairdressers and suffering from eczemas. The most frequent allergen was nickel sulfate (57.7%). Exclusive nickel allergy without sensitization to substances professionally used, however, was only found in 6.9% of the female patients tested. Fifty consecutive patients underwent standardized surgical treatment for isthmic lumbosacral spondylolisthesis. Twenty-two (44%) had mechanical symptoms only and were treated with in situ fusion. Twenty-eight (56%) had back and radicular symptoms and underwent decompression and fusion. Follow-up averaged 40.4 months. Satisfactory results were achieved in 30 (60%). Patients under 30 and over 50 appeared to do better. Success rate was not related to degree of slippage. Nineteen consecutive patients claiming compensation for vibration white finger were reviewed. The cold provocation test was found to be of no value in confirming a diagnosis of vibration white finger. Small cysts were apparent on the radiographs in 61% of patients' wrists but none had developed significant degenerative changes of the wrist or digits. In this group of claimants, 63% had carpal tunnel syndrome on nerve conduction studies.

It is often asserted, especially in worker's compensation cases, that blunt trauma or work-related physical exertion can be responsible for the rupture of a preexisting saccular intracranial aneurysm. However, a critical review of the literature and extensive personal experience indicates no or at best a very weak relationship between blunt closed-head trauma and the rupture of a preexisting saccular intracranial aneurysm. This report is based on a 19-year study of the effects of trauma on aneurysms in a clinical and autopsy-derived population.
