Zinc is important for fetal growth and is involved in several important enzyme systems. Maternal and umbilical plasma zinc concentrations were determined in 52 parturient women with mild and severe pre-eclampsia, and were compared with those obtained from 20 women in labor whose pregnancies had progressed normally. A 25-year-old patient with acrodermatitis enteropathica who had been treated with di-iodohydroxyquinoline for 20 years was changed to zinc sulphate therapy and studied under full metabolic balance control for zinc, calcium, magnesium, and inorganic phosphorus. The results obtained indicate that there is only a small overall deficit of body zinc stores in this disease and that the function of di-iodohydroxyquinoline is to increase the amount of zinc absorbed and retained by the body.

Three patients with acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE), a disorder of zinc metabolism, demonstrated a zinc-responsive defect in chemotaxis of neutrophils and monocytes. In a 7-year-old boy with acrodermatitis enteropathica, oral administration of zinc sulfate brought about complete relief of symptoms and signs, with clearing of the skin lesions, arrest of diarrhea, and growth of new hair. Considering the dramatic results obtained, we believe that oral treatment with zinc sulfate is an innocuous, inexpensive, and very effective medication for acrodermatitis enteropathica, which can replace the previously used and toxic diiodohydroxyquin-like drugs.

The zinc content of trabecular and cortical bone was measured in 28 femora obtained at autopsy. The ratios of calcium to zinc, phosphorus and magnesium were determined and their relation to age and vertebral density was investigated. Thirteen patients with malabsorption, 7 women and 5 men, were investigated extensively. All showed low serum zinc concentrations irrespective of the duration of illness and degree of malabsorption. Eleven of the 13 had active coeliac disease.
