The localization of protein kinase C (PKC) was investigated in B cells or B cell lines derived from patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVI) and healthy controls. Stimulation of the healthy control B cells by phorbol ester or anti-mu induced PKC activation and translocation to the plasma membrane after 10 min. In contrast, in the CVI-B cells, no apparent PKC translocation was induced by either phorbol ester or anti-mu stimulation. These results suggest that the pathogenesis in some CVI patients might involve defects in the pathway of PKC activation.

The aim of the present study has been to determine the effect of serotonin (5-HT) on the absorption of L-leucine across the rabbit jejunum. The results show that serotonin significantly diminishes the uptake and steady-state tissue accumulation and the mucosal to serosal flux of L-leucine. This effect does not change with previous intestinal exposure of the mucosa to the 5-HT. Serotonin does not seem to modify amino acid simple diffusion across the intestinal epithelium. Erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency was first described in Basenjis 20 years ago. Although the approach to diagnosis had not been well established, a screening program to detect heterozygotes was thought to have eliminated PK deficiency from the Basenjis of the United States. Four not closely related Basenjis with severe chronic hemolytic anemia, from various parts of the United States, were studied. Their PCV ranged from 16 to 25% and their reticulocyte count was always above 15%. A progressive osteosclerosis was seen in all of the Basenjis and hepatic failure developed in 2 of them.

Previous reports have suggested that creatine kinase isoenzymes are elevated in patients with chronic renal failure and thus are less useful in the evaluation of chest pain in such patients.
