Adaptive metabolic rewiring and ion homeostasis enhance oxidative stress resistance in Lacticaseibacillus casei.

UNLABELLED: Enhancing the oxidative stress tolerance of microorganisms is critical for maintaining their viability and functionality in industrial fermentation under aerobic conditions. The present study used adaptive laboratory evolution to enhance the oxidative stress resistance of Lacticaseibacillus casei, a widely used lactic acid bacterium (LAB) in fermentation. By applying serial propagations with batch cultures under high oxygen conditions, the evolved strain exhibited enhanced H2O2 tolerance, improved metal ion chelation, and increased biofilm formation. By combining whole genome seque

Inchworm migration facilitates amoeboid cell adaptation to high-adhesion environments.

Cells dynamically adapt their migration modes to environmental conditions, but their response to sticky surfaces, where they risk becoming immobilized, remains unclear. In our study, we discovered that strong adhesion prompts substantial changes in Dictyostelium discoideum, leading to "inchworm migration," a novel subtype of amoeboid migration. This adaptation involves minimal contact between the cell and the surface, with the cell body standing upright and twisting, followed by rapid reattachment for directed movement. Concurrently, the cells shed migrasomes loaded with negatively charged mol

Turning up the heat on skeletal muscle adaptations and neuromuscular function: key considerations for passive heating prescription and best practices.

Despite compelling evidence supporting the benefits of passive heat therapy in promoting skeletal muscle adaptation and enhancing neuromuscular function, the topic remains debated. Some recent studies report no significant effects on muscle protein synthesis, muscle mass, recovery, strength, or power. This raises critical questions: is passive heat therapy not actually effective? Or do these discrepancies reflect inconsistencies in study protocols and an overgeneralisation of the term passive heating? Despite its growing recognition as a health treatment, exercise mimetic, and tool for sport p

Influence of yeast adaptation with bio-activators on the process of wine alcoholic fermentation.

The initial stages of alcoholic fermentation are highly sensible to various external influences, making the ability of the fermenting strains to adapt to challenging conditions crucial for the success of the process. The performance of wine yeasts depends on their capacity to endure the harsh conditions of must fermentation. Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains consistently encounter unfavourable conditions during winemaking, such as low pH levels. This study investigated the effects of adding two commercial bio-activators (Adapta®, Hnutrix® B-Vitality) on fermentation performances and yeast cell

A critical reassessment of the novel weapons hypothesis and allelopathy as an adaptive strategy that facilitates plant invasion.

Plants have evolved an assortment of chemical adaptations that integrate environmental cues with developmental processes to regulate growth and reproduction. A subset of these phytochemicals may be considered allelopathic adaptations if they enhance fitness by suppressing competition for limiting resources. Despite compelling critiques by John Harper almost a half century ago, research on allelopathy nonetheless experienced a revival at the turn of the 21st century that gave rise to a 'novel weapons hypothesis' (NWH) to explain plant invasions. We briefly review the storied history of allelopa

Metabolic adaptation to energetic demands of early lactation in Holstein Friesian and Simmental cows.

Holstein Friesian (HF) is the highest-performing dairy breed worldwide. However, this breed is prone to suffer from health disorders and infertility due to metabolic instability. The aim of the study was to use the metabolic differences between to breed, German HF and German Simmental (SI), for discussion of the biological impact of well-known and novel pathways and their respective indicators. Therefore, a targeted metabolomics approach combined with an examination of classical clinical chemistry using plasma samples was used to describe the metabolic status 42 days before expected calving an

Alcohol-Mediated Skeletal Muscle Adaptations and Their Impact on Comorbidities.

At-risk alcohol use has significant adverse effects on multiple tissue and organ systems, including the skeletal muscle. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying alcohol-induced dysfunctional skeletal muscle (SKM) mass are multifactorial, involving decreased protein synthesis, increased protein degradation, impaired glucose homeostasis, bioenergetic dysregulation, aberrant extracellular matrix remodeling, impaired satellite cell function, circadian rhythm disruption, and epigenomic adaptations. This review provides a brief overview of these major alcohol-induced mechanisms of SKM dysfuncti

Cobamide metabolism, regulation, and adaptation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Cobamides play a paradoxical but critical role in the biology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis. Although Mtb retains nearly all cobalamin (Cbl) biosynthetic genes and encodes multiple cobamide-requiring enzymes, experimental evidence indicates that Mtb is incapable of de novo Cbl synthesis under any tested conditions to date. Instead, an evolutionary shift appears to have occurred toward host dependency for biologically relevant cobamides or their precursors. This review highlights recent advances in our understanding of cobamide-related metabolism in Mt

Phenotypic plasticity of a winter-diapause mechanism copes with the effects of summer global warming in an ectothermic predator.

To adapt to changes in temperature, animals tend to invest more energy in thermal tolerance to enhance survival, which can have simultaneous costs on plastic traits. Would a decrease in genetic variability, due to global warming, affect the ability of populations with existing metabolic regulatory mechanisms to cope with extreme temperatures? To address this question, we conducted a series of experiments based on the A1B scenario of global warming, assessing within-population genetic variance in (a) morphological traits, (b) metabolic rate allometries, and (c) survival of a winter-diapausing p

Light and scanning electron microscope characterization of mandibular symphysis tissue as a functional adaptation in the mandible development of human fetuses.

When developing, the mandible presents great plasticity and contains condensed mesenchymal cells that develops into Meckel's cartilage, of which the anterior part forms the mandibular symphysis. Mandible human development studies focus on investigating whether the beginning of mandibular fusion in fetal period is related to symphysis ossification and the tensions imposed on it, considering that tongue movements, mouth opening, and closing can be seen in fetuses. This research analyses tissue modifications during human mandibular symphysis growth using light and scanning electron microscopy to

Aftereffects of visuomanual prism adaptation in auditory modality: Review and perspectives.

Visuomanual prism adaptation (PA), which consists of pointing to visual targets while wearing prisms that shift the visual field, is one of the oldest experimental paradigms used to investigate sensorimotor plasticity. Since the 2000's, a growing scientific interest emerged for the expansion of PA to cognitive functions in several sensory modalities. The present work focused on the aftereffects of PA within the auditory modality. Recent studies showed changes in mental representation of auditory frequencies and a shift of divided auditory attention following PA. Moreover, one study demonstrate

Temporal adaptation of the postural control following a prolonged fin swimming.

PURPOSE: Postural control deteriorates following a transition between two environments, highlighting a sensory conflict when returning to natural conditions. Aquatic immersion offers new perspectives for studying postural control adaptation in transitional situations. Our aim is to study immediate and post-task static postural control adaptation on land after a prolonged fin swimming exercise in total immersion. METHODS: Standing static postural control was assessed in 14 professional or recreational SCUBA divers (11 men, 3 women; 33.21 ± 10.70 years), with eyes open and closed, before, immed

Coordinated molecular and ecological adaptations underlie a highly successful parasitoid.

The success of an organism depends on the molecular and ecological adaptations that promote its beneficial fitness. Parasitoids are valuable biocontrol agents for successfully managing agricultural pests, and they have evolved diversified strategies to adapt to both the physiological condition of hosts and the competition of other parasitoids. Here, we deconstructed the parasitic strategies in a highly successful parasitoid, Trichopria drosophilae, which parasitizes a broad range of Drosophila hosts, including the globally invasive species D. suzukii. We found that T. drosophilae had developed

Human adaptations to diet: Biological and cultural coevolution.

Modern humans evolved in Africa some 200,000 years ago, and since then, human populations have expanded and diversified to occupy a broad range of habitats and use different subsistence modes. This has resulted in different adaptations, such as differential responses to diseases and different abilities to digest or tolerate certain foods. The shift from a subsistence strategy based on hunting and gathering during the Palaeolithic to a lifestyle based on the consumption of domesticated animals and plants in the Neolithic can be considered one of the most important dietary transitions of Homo sa

Thermal Stress and Adult Fitness in a Drosophila suzukii Neotropical Propagule.

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura 1931) is a cosmopolitan horticultural pest originally from temperate East Asia; yet, its recent introduction in southeast and central Brazil raises the possibility it might expand into warmer climatic zones. In theoretical terms, the adaptive potential of invasive species can be impaired by the lack of genetic variation, but, on the other hand, phenotypic plasticity might play an important role in the adaptation to the new environment. In this context, we investigated the effects of temperature variation (18°C, 22°C, and 28°C) on fitness traits and size of male re

Neural correlates of gait adaptation in younger and older adults.

Mobility decline is a major concern for older adults. A key component of maintaining mobility with advancing age is the ability to learn and adapt to the environment. The split-belt treadmill paradigm is an experimental protocol that tests the ability to adapt to a dynamic environment. Here we examined the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) derived structural neural correlates of individual differences in adaptation to split-belt walking for younger and older adults. We have previously shown that younger adults adopt an asymmetric walking pattern during split-belt walking, particularly in the me

Worldwide host associations of the tick genus Ixodes suggest relationships based on environmental sharing rather than on co-phylogenetic events.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to capture how ticks of the genus Ixodes gained their hosts using network constructs. We propose two alternative hypotheses, namely, an ecological background (ticks and hosts sharing environmentally available conditions) and a phylogenetic one, in which both partners co-evolved, adapting to existing environmental conditions after the association took place. METHODS: We used network constructs linking all the known pairs of associations between each species and stage of ticks with families and orders of hosts. Faith's phylogenetic diversity was used to evaluate the
