Genetic Association of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Major Depression With Suicidal Ideation and Attempts in Children: The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is among the leading causes of death in children and adolescents. There are well-known risk factors of suicide, including childhood abuse, family conflicts, social adversity, and psychopathology. While suicide risk is also known to be heritable, few studies have investigated genetic risk in younger individuals. METHODS: Using polygenic risk score analysis, we examined whether genetic susceptibility to major psychiatric disorders is associated with suicidal behaviors among 11,878 children enrolled in the ABCD (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development) Study. Suicidal ideation

Parental Family History of Alcohol Use Disorder and Neural Correlates of Response Inhibition in Children From the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

BACKGROUND: Youth whose parents have alcohol use disorder (AUD) are at higher risk for earlier initiation and greater magnitude of alcohol use, and have a higher likelihood of developing an AUD than their peers without parental history of AUD. This increased risk may be partly attributable to altered development of inhibitory control and related neural circuitry. This study examined neural activation during a motor response inhibition Stop Signal Task (SST) in substance-naïve youth aged 9 to 10 years with and without parental family history of AUD. METHODS: Baseline cross-sectional survey and

Gender Differences in the Development of Growth and Fixed Mindsets Among Chinese Adolescents: A Cross-Lagged Panel Network Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Students' mindsets about the malleability of their abilities shape their academic performance, social adaptation, and psychological well-being, making it important to track how these beliefs change during adolescence. Although mindsets undergo substantial change in this period, most studies have used latent variable models that ignore the dynamic interactions among mindset items. Examining how specific items change over time can thus reveal how mindsets develop and whether this process differs between boys and girls. METHODS: This study examined the temporal links among the 10 g

The reciprocal relationships between positive youth development and psychological distress in adolescents: the moderating role of gender and stress mindsets.

Although previous studies have suggested a reciprocal relationship between Positive Youth Development (PYD) and adolescent psychological dis … dset showed no significant within-person moderating effect. These findings indicate that protecting adolescent development requires reducing psychological distress and addressing negative stress mindsets.

Predicting positive youth development among Chinese adolescents: A machine learning approach using multiwave longitudinal data.

Despite growing recognition that positive youth development (PYD) depends on the dynamic interaction of individual and ecological resources, existing studies rely on linear models that cannot capture high-dimensional, nonlinear predictor configurations. This study applied machine learning to four-wave longitudinal data from 5019 Chinese adolescents (ages 9-19) to identify the key predictors of PYD at T4 (controlling for prior PYD at T3), measured by the Chinese 4Cs model (Character, Competence, Confidence, Connection). We compared 12 algorithms; CatBoost achieved the best prediction ( R 2

The development and course of youth psychopathology: a longitudinal study of prevalence and continuity from early childhood through late adolescence.

Youth mental disorders are prevalent and show homotypic and heterotypic continuity. We followed a community sample of 609 families with 3-year-old children living within 20 contiguous miles of Stony Brook, NY, with at least one biological parent; primary caregivers were required to speak English, and children with significant medical or developmental disorders were excluded. Participants were assessed at three-year intervals from ages 3-18, tracking the prevalence and continuity of five common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavior,

Bone mineral content and physical activity in adolescents with cerebral palsy and their typically developing peers: a cross-sectional study.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most prevalent severe pediatric motor disability and often leads to compromised bone health due in part to limitations in functional mobility. While moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) positively influences bone health, its relationship with bone parameters in adolescents with CP remains understudied. Our primary objective was to identify whether bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) differ between ambulatory adolescents with CP and sex and maturity-status (years from peak height velocity) matched typically developing (TD) adolescents. Our secondary

Process evaluation of an intervention developed using a participatory approach targeting school-related sedentary behaviour among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents' high levels of school-related sedentary behaviour pose health risks, yet existing interventions have shown limited effectiveness. Participatory research, which engages adolescents and other partners in intervention development, holds promise by tailoring interventions to their needs and context, which may improve intervention implementation and effectiveness. This study conducted an evaluation of a participatory process aimed at developing and implementing an intervention addressing adolescents' school-related sedentary behaviour and the implementation process of this

Efficacy, Safety and Pharmacokinetics of Semaglutide 1.7 mg for Obesity Treatment in Adolescents: A Model-Informed Drug Development Approach.

AIMS: Treatment options for adolescents with obesity are limited, and some may benefit from lower maintenance doses of semaglutide. This study used model-informed drug development (MIDD) to evaluate whether a 1.7-mg maintenance dose provides comparable exposure, tolerability and BMI effects in adolescents versus adults and versus the 2.4-mg dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Simulation analyses combined pharmacokinetic, BMI and safety data from the adolescent STEP TEENS Phase 3 study (N = 201) and the adult semaglutide STEP studies (Phases 2-3; ~3100 participants). Data across doses (0.25-2.4 mg) w

Bullying victimization and brain development: a longitudinal structural magnetic resonance imaging study from adolescence to early adulthood.

This study investigated associations between bullying victimization and brain development using longitudinal structural MRI data from the IMAGEN cohort (n = 2094; 1009 females) across three time points (∼14, ∼19, and ∼22 years). A data-driven analysis revealed that higher bullying victimization was significantly associated with accelerated volumetric growth in subcortical and limbic regions, including the putamen (β = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.10-0.15), amygdala (β = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.05-0.09), hippocampus (β = 0.06, 95% CI: 0.04-0.08), and anterior cingulate cortex (caudal: β = 0.05, 95% CI: 0.03-0.07; r

Development and External Validation of a Prediction Model to Identify Suicide Attempters in Treatment-Naive Adolescents With Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal behavior in adolescents poses a significant risk, and suicide attempts are the strongest predictors of suicide death. Patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are at high risk of attempting suicide. However, there is still a lack of effective tools in clinical settings to identify these suicide attempters. METHODS: The study assessed suicidal attempts and their predictive factors in adolescents first diagnosed with MDD from August 1, 2022, to May 31, 2024. Five algorithms were used for model construction: logistic regression, random forest, decision tree, support vec

Development and external validation of machine learning models to predict insulin resistance among iron-deficient children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance (IR) represents a critical metabolic complication in iron-deficient children, yet existing predictive models target general or overweight pediatric populations and do not account for iron-deficiency as a distinct risk modifier. This study aimed to develop and externally validate machine learning (ML) models using routinely available clinical parameters to address this diagnostic gap. METHODS: We utilized data from 222 iron-deficient children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) for model training, and 125 cases fro

Influence of a multidirectional overground body weight support system on walking-related tasks in typically developing children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: The RYSEN is a multidirectional body weight support system for overground gait rehabilitation. It provides vertical unloading and enables unrestricted overground walking while preventing falls. While the RYSEN seems highly transparent in healthy adults, i.e., users only feel small forces from the device in response to their movements, we explored how the RYSEN affects the execution of various walking-related tasks in typically developing children and adolescents (TDCA). METHODS: Nineteen TDCA, weighing 19.3-57.3 kg, participated. They performed several walking-related tasks in a

The role of identity in the development of depressive, anxiety and psychosis symptoms in adolescents exposed to childhood adversity: a process-oriented approach.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is known to predispose to a wide array of psychopathology in adolescence and early adulthood. Identity development, being a crucial developmental task during adolescence, has been suggested to affect this association. Nonetheless, research on the role of identity processes is scarce. The current study aims to investigate how identity processes of exploration and commitment may impact the association between childhood adversity and psychopathology. METHODS: We cross-sectionally investigated the association between childhood adversity, identity processes (i.e., e

Assessing anxiety in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ADORA): developing a health equity protocol for non-invasive biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying anxiety disorders in autistic youth can be challenging due to the unique presentation of anxiety symptoms in autistic youth and the difficulties youth may have reporting on their own anxiety symptoms. These challenges underscore the need for objective and reliable measures. Understanding whether autonomic activity is associated with the presence of anxiety may lead to its use as an objective anxiety assessment tool in individuals who may otherwise struggle to communicate their feelings of anxiety. Most published studies examining autonomic activity and anxiety in auti
