Advancements in insulin delivery: the potential of natural polymers for improved diabetes management.

Diabetes is a growing global health issue, with millions of people affected by the condition. While insulin therapy is vital for managing both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, traditional methods such as subcutaneous injections have notable drawbacks, including pain, discomfort, and difficulty in maintaining stable blood sugar levels. To improve insulin delivery, research is increasingly focused on the use of natural polymers-substances derived from plants, animals, and microorganisms. These polymers, including materials like alginate, chitosan, and hyaluronic acid, have promising properties such a

Organic matter removal mitigates crystallization inhibition to enhance co-recovery of potassium and phosphorus from wastewater.

Magnesium potassium phosphate (MPP) hexahydrate crystallization is a promising approach for the simultaneous recovery of potassium and phosphorus. However, organic matter in the wastewater affects the formation of crystals, which reduces the recovery efficiency. This study constructed the optimal conditions for the formation of MPP crystals, on the basis of which the mechanism of the effect of different types of organic matter on crystallization. The results showed that the using MgCl2 as the magnesium source, potassium and phosphorus recovery efficiencies reached 98.05 % and 99.40 %, respecti

Advanced application of carbohydrate-based micro/nanoparticles for rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a kind of synovitis and progressive joint destruction disease. Dysregulated immune cell activation, inflammatory cytokine overproduction, and subsequent reactive oxidative species (ROS) production contribute to the RA process. Carbohydrates, including cellulose, chitosan, alginate and dextran, are among the most abundant and important biomolecules in nature and are widely used in biomedicine. Carbohydrate-based micro/nanoparticles(M/NPs) as functional excipients have the ability to improve the bioavailability, solubility and stability of numerous drugs used in RA t

Heterogenous hydrogel mimicking the osteochondral ECM applied to tissue regeneration.

Inspired by the intricate extracellular matrix (ECM) of natural cartilage and subchondral bone, a heterogenous bilayer hydrogel scaffold is fabricated. Gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and acryloyl glucosamine (AGA) serve as the main components in the upper layer, mimicking the chondral ECM. Meanwhile, vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) as a non-collagen protein analogue is incorporated into the bottom layer to induce the in situ biomineralization of calcium phosphate. The two heterogenous layers are effectively sutured together by the inter-diffusion between the upper and bottom layer hydrogels, together

Oesophageal reflux disease. Diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment with special reference to the role of sucralfate.

The direct cause of oesophageal reflux disease is readily apparent, as oesophageal reflux of gastric contents has a deleterious effect on the oesophageal mucosa. Reflux is a direct result of a multiplicity of aetiological factors which interact in many ways. The symptoms of the disorder can masquerade as other conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory and abdominal problems. The diagnosis is suggested from the symptoms and confirmed by endoscopy with biopsy. Among additional diagnostic test, oesophageal pH monitoring using a portable system is a simple procedure providing qualitative and

Innovative bilayered buccal films: A paediatric-friendly dosage form for transmucosal azithromycin delivery.

Azithromycin (AZT) is one of the most prescribed antibiotics in children, generally administered through the oral route. However, its low aqueous solubility, poor oral bioavailability and bitter taste can affect the therapy efficacy and the children's compliance. In this study, different mucoadhesive polymers and solubilizers were explored to develop a primary layer capable of establishing a prolonged contact with the mucosa. An ethylcellulose layer was further applied to assure the drug unidirectional absorption through the buccal mucosa and limit its bitter taste in the mouth. Films were cha

Sodium alginate enhances rheological properties and curcumin encapsulation in donkey myofibrillar protein Pickering emulsions: Molecular docking and experimental insights.

This study systematically explored the effects of sodium alginate (SA) on the structural and interfacial properties of donkey myofibrillar protein (DMP), and the curcumin stability and delivery performance in the DMP-based Pickering emulsion. The results showed that SA interacted with DMP via hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces, increased surface hydrophobicity, and electrostatic repulsion. These interactions promoted the formation of the three-dimensional network within the emulsion continuous phase, significantly improving its rheological properties and storage stability. Antibacterial alginate hydrogel coated composite bone cement beads to treat osteomyelitis and regeneration.

Invasion of bacteria or pathogens into the bone causes bone infection leading to inflammation and damage to bone tissue. The current treatment modalities for chronic osteomyelitis is antibiotic treatment using bone cement beads. Continuous release of antibiotics from bone cements for a longer duration resulting in bacterial resistance. To overcome these limitations, antibiotics incorporated hydrogel-coated composite bone cement beads provide effective antibacterial activity, possess an ECM-like environment for healing and localized drug delivery. Therefore, we developed a ciprofloxacin incorpo

Fabrication of Double-Network Hydrogel Based on N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan, Aldehyde Hyaluronate, and Alginate for 3D Bio-Ink Applications.

This study fabricates and characterizes novel double-network hydrogels for 3D bio-ink applications, combining N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC), aldehyde hyaluronate (AHy), and alginate (Alg). The initial Schiff base-cross-linked network (NOCC-AHy-Alg) is enhanced with a second ionic Ca2+ cross-linking, optimized via an internal suspension method (CaCO3/glucono-δ-lactone). Optimal parameters are 0.2 m CaCO3 and 0.1 m glucono-δ-lactone with a 1-h immersion, proving superior to external CaCl2 immersion. This internal approach yields a more robust network with improved compressive strength, dimen

Mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa-derived alginate modulates innate immune transcriptional responses and promotes intracellular growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria.

Pulmonary dysbiosis has been increasingly associated with tuberculosis susceptibility, relapse, and treatment failure; however, the mechanistic contribution of specific airway pathogens remains poorly understood. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, particularly its mucoid phenotype characterized by alginate overproduction, is frequently detected in chronic lung diseases and tuberculosis-associated microbiomes. Here, we investigated whether mucoid P. aeruginosa and alginate modulate innate immune responses during Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria infection. Using human type II pne

Synthesis and application of cucumber extract-loaded hydrogels based on oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose and alginate as vitreous replacements.

Retinal detachment is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, with current treatments using silicone oil or expanded gases to facilitate reattachment. Polymeric hydrogels are a promising alternative due to their optical clarity, rheological properties, and biodegradability. In this study, we synthesized polymeric hydrogels by crosslinking oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose and sodium alginate with calcium chloride and introduced cucumber extract, a plant-based antioxidant rich in flavonoids and phenolics, known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The resultant hydrogels demonstrated a swelling
