OBJECTIVES: This study, conducted by the Bladder Cancer in Latin America (BLATAM) group, aims to analyze epidemiological and therapeutic data on non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) in Latin American patients. It seeks to identify factors contributing to suboptimal responses to Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy and assess areas for improvement in regional treatment practices.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study was carried out in collaboration with reference Urology Departments across Latin America. Data were collected using an electronic Case Report Form (CRF)

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to determine if oral vancomycin, fidaxomicin, and oral metronidazole use in the United States changed after publication of revised clinical practice guidelines for Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in February 2018.
METHODS: We obtained US antibiotic prescription data (IQVIA) from 2006-August 2019 and used guideline-recommended dosing regimens to estimate monthly numbers of 10-day treatment courses of vancomycin, fidaxomicin and metronidazole. Interrupted time-series analyses were performed, adjusted by month. We compared linear trends for monthly numbers of

This ecological time-series study analysed tuberculosis (TB) mortality trends in the Americas from 2000 to 2019 using data from the Pan American Health Organization. Age-adjusted mortality rates by country and sex were assessed with Joinpoint regression to estimate annual percentage changes. Results showed a general decline in TB mortality, with average annual reductions of -2.3% in men and -1.9% in women. Brazil, Colombia, and Canada exhibited continuous decreases, while Saint Lucia, Jamaica, and Honduras had episodes of increase or fluctuation. The highest mortality rates persisted in Bolivi…

Latin Americans are underrepresented in genetic studies, increasing disparities in personalized genomic medicine. Despite available genetic data from thousands of Latin Americans, accessing and navigating the bureaucratic hurdles for consent or access remains challenging. To address this, we introduce the Genetics of Latin American Diversity (GLAD) Project, compiling genome-wide information from 53,738 Latin Americans across 39 studies representing 46 geographical regions. Through GLAD, we identified heterogeneous ancestry composition and recent gene flow across the Americas. Additionally, we …

The article analyzes the perceived challenges and strategies implemented in five Latin American and Caribbean countries to ensure continuity of care and access to health services for women, newborns, children, and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study corresponds to a quick assessment based on semi-structured interviews with key informants in countries selected by convenience: Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Grenada, and the Dominican Republic. Interviews were conducted with 23 key informants: (a) decision makers at the national and/or subnational level, (b) healthcare professional

Colombia aims to eliminate malaria by 2030 but remains one of the highest burden countries in the Americas. Plasmodium vivax contributes half of all malaria cases, with its control challenged by relapsing parasitaemia, drug resistance and cross-border spread. Using 64 Colombian P. vivax genomes collected between 2013 and 2017, we explored diversity and selection in two major foci of transmission: Chocó and Córdoba. Open-access data from other countries were used for comparative assessment of drug resistance candidates and to assess cross-border spread. Across Colombia, polyclonal infections we…

OBJECTIVE: In 2019, dengue was among the "top-ten threats to global health," with 3.1 million cases reported from the Americas, the highest ever. Simultaneously, Jamaica reported its largest dengue outbreak in 40 years, following Chikungunya and Zika virus epidemics, in 2014 and 2016-2017, respectively. We describe dengue in children admitted to five hospitals in Jamaica during August 2018 through September 2019.
METHODS: Hospitalized children and adolescents aged 0 to 15 years with dengue were managed using PAHO/WHO criteria. Data were extracted from questionnaires, entered into a dataset on…

Indigenous populations are considered at higher risk of psychiatric disorder but many studies do not include direct comparisons with similar non-Indigenous controls. We undertook a meta-analysis of studies that compared the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in Indigenous populations in the Americas with those of non-Indigenous groups with similar socio-demographic features (Registration number: CRD42015025854). A systematic search of PubMed, Medline, PsycInfo, PsycArticles, ScienceDirect, EMBASE, and article bibliographies was performed. We included comparisons of lifetime rates a…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Glycine Antagonist in Neuroprotection (GAIN) International and GAIN Americas trials were prospectively designed, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of gavestinel, a glycine-site antagonist and putative neuroprotectant drug administered within 6 hours of suspected ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Both trials reported that gavestinel was ineffective in ischemic stroke. This analysis reports the results in those with primary intracerebral hemorrhage.
METHODS: The primary hypothesis was that gavestinel treatment did not alter outcome, measured at 3 months by the Barthel …

The vaccination programs of the countries in the Region of the Americas have produced notable results over the last several decades. In recognition of those accomplishments, in June 2003 the 132nd session of the Executive Committee of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) called on the Member States of PAHO to prepare, within one year, national action plans for the elimination of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) by the year 2010. During the Executive Committee discussions, praise was given for the sustained efforts of the countries of the Region in the struggle to eradicate …

The Pan American Health Organization adopted as a goal the interruption of transmission of wild poliovirus from the americas by 1990. Collection and processing of stool specimens from patients with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) to identify wild poliovirus is critical for monitoring the success of the eradication programme. In the study described, cases of AFP in children less than 15 years of age reported in the Americas from 1989 to 1991 were evaluated to investigate the epidemiology of AFP associated with the isolation of non-polio enterovirus (NPEV), to characterize their clinical presentat…

BACKGROUND: More than 40 million people living in Latin America have been diagnosed with diabetes, and this number is expected to increase. As the risk of diabetes and diabetes mortality increases, diabetes interventions tailored specifically for individuals in Latin America are essential.
PURPOSE: To identify components of diabetes interventions that effectively reduce diabetes risk to inform interventions for Latin American populations.
DATA SOURCES: Systematic review of PubMed, CINAHL, LILACS, and Web of Science was performed from 2013 to 2025.

Neurological disorders remain a leading cause of disability across Latin America, yet access to specialist care is affected by important workforce shortages, geographic disparities, and under-resourced health systems. Tele-neurology has emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate these barriers, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in rapid digital health adoption. This review article examines the development and implementation of tele-neurology initiatives across Latin America, with a focus on Ecuador; drawing on examples such as TeleEEG, telestroke networks, and

INTRODUCTION: Six years later, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children in Latin America remains profound. Even though they were considered less susceptible to the disease, infants have emerged as one of the most affected populations, with the pandemic exposing deep inequities and magnifying vulnerabilities. This paper is presented as a perspective from SLIPE on COVID-19, providing expert insight into the current epidemiological situation in the region.
AREAS COVERED: This review analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children's health and wellbeing, education, and immunizati

This study examines how structural, relational, and cognitive dimensions of social capital influenced public responses to COVID-19 in 18 Latin American countries. Using Latinobarometer survey data from 2018, 2020, and 2023. This estimates multivariate Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) models to assess associations between social capital and behaviors, such as risk perception, preventive measures, and evaluation of government response. Relational social capital-particularly institutional trust-was consistently associated with greater compliance with preventiv

We investigated environmental determinants of Parkinson's disease (PD) and their attributable burden in a case-control study of 9,887 participants from nine Latin American countries. Logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, and country estimated associations, and population attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated for modifiable risk factors. Weekly caffeine consumption (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.77, p < 0.0001) and tobacco use for ≥ 5 years (aOR 0.83, p = 0.0009) were inversely associated with PD, whereas severe head trauma (aOR 1.35), occupational pesticide exposure (aOR 1.42), occu
