A Critical Role for Thermosensation in Host Seeking by Skin-Penetrating Nematodes.

Skin-penetrating parasitic nematodes infect approximately one billion people worldwide and are a major source of neglected tropical disease [1-6]. Their life cycle includes an infective third-larval (iL3) stage that searches for hosts to infect in a poorly understood process that involves both thermal and olfactory cues. Here, we investigate the temperature-driven behaviors of skin-penetrating iL3s, including the human-parasitic threadworm Strongyloides stercoralis and the human-parasitic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. We show that human-parasitic iL3s respond robustly to thermal gradients.

Ivermectin treatment of free-ranging endangered Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) pups: effect on hookworm and lice infection status, haematological parameters, growth, and survival.

A placebo-controlled study was used to investigate the effectiveness of ivermectin to treat hookworm (Uncinaria sanguinis) and lice (Antarctophthirus microchir) infections in free-ranging Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) pups and to test the hypotheses that these parasitic infections cause anaemia, systemic inflammatory responses, and reduced growth, and contribute towards decreased pup survival. Ivermectin was identified as an effective and safe anthelmintic in this species. Pups administered ivermectin had significantly higher erythrocyte counts and significantly lower eosinophil count

Electron and light microscopy of neutrophil responses in mice vaccinated and challenged with third-stage infective hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) larvae.

The role of neutrophils in mediating host inflammation was examined in mice vaccinated with living third-stage infective hookworm larvae (L3). Mice were vaccinated by oral immunization with 500 L3 (Ancylostoma caninum) once every 2 weeks for a total of three immunizations. The vaccinated mice were then challenged intraperitoneally with 2000 L3) 1 week after the final immunization. To stimulate peritoneal production of neutrophils, 2 ml of 2% glycogen were injected intraperitoneally at 16 h prior to the challenge infection. Neutrophils were found to comprise 85% of the peritoneal cell populatio

Enterobius, trichuris, capillaria, and hookworm including ancylostoma caninum.

Infections by the nematodes Enterobius, Trichuris, Capillaria, and hookworm are some of the most widespread gastrointestinal infections worldwide. This article is designed not only to provide an overview of the different parasites in terms of epidemiology, clinical manifestation, and disease but also to highlight particular areas of intensive research activity that are providing new insights into both the biology of the host-parasite relationship and possible new approaches to infection management for the future.

Eosinophilic enteritis presenting as surgical emergencies: a report of six cases.

Eosinophilic enteritis is now commonly diagnosed in northern Queensland, and cases have been seen elsewhere. The patients present with acute abdominal symptoms, which may mimic appendicitis, and many cases are managed by surgery. To facilitate the diagnosis of this unusual syndrome, six surgically treated cases are reported here. Blood eosinophilia may be a helpful diagnostic feature, but in some cases it does not develop until after the acute abdominal episode. Most cases resolve satisfactorily with conservative management.

[Clinical analysis of 90 cases of eosinophilia and pulmonary infiltrates with peripheral eosinophilia].

90 patients diagnosed as eosinophilia and pulmonary infiltrates with peripheral eosinophilia in PUMC Hospital from 1957 to 1986 were reported. The cause of the eosinophilia was unknown in 42% of the patients. Among these patients, hypereosinophilic syndromes (HES) were suspected in 11 patients. The most common presenting symptoms of HES were fever, skin lesions gastrointestinal symptoms and hepatosplenomegaly, the mean peripheral blood eosinophil count was as high as 25.6 x 10(9) cells/L. Biopsies of bone marrow and involved organs revealed extensive eosinophilic infiltration and severe necros

Experimental infection of pups with Ancylostoma caninum larvae from an abnormal host, the chicken.

The migration and distribution of Ancylostoma caninum larvae in the tissues of chickens, infected orally with 1,000 larvae, were studied. Larval yield at necropsy from different organs after digestion with artificial gastric juice revealed a 62.9% recovery four hours after inoculation, followed by a sharp decline to 5.4% at 72 hours. Larvae were found in the heart within four hours, the lungs within eight hours and the liver within 12 to 18 hours but no larvae were recovered from the spleen, kidney or brain. Migration in the muscles of head, neck, thorax and abdomen was detected at 12 hours an

Evaluation of granulated fenbendazole (22.2%) against induced and naturally occurring helminth infections in cats.

A granulated formulation of 22.2% fenbendazole was tested for anthelmintic activity against helminths in cats. The drug was administered in 20 g of canned food on each of 3 days at a dosage of 50 mg/kg of body weight/day. Of 31 young adult cats harboring naturally occurring infections of Toxocara cati, 16 were treated and 15 served as controls. There was 100% clearance of ascarids from all treated cats. Among controls, 18% of the ascarid burden was expelled naturally. Thirty additional cats were acclimated for 2 months prior to infecting them experimentally with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, Tae

An unusual outbreak of hookworm disease in North India.

An unusual outbreak of hookworm disease occurred after a game of "kabaddi" (a local game which results in much body contact with the ground) in 27 young males from one village. It was characterized by an immediate incapacitating dermatitis, followed by severe pulmonary symptoms. Progressive weakness, abdominal pain, weight loss and anemia developed within a few months. Ancylostoma duodenale was found in all except four patients who had received antihelminthic treatment. Specific treatment for hookworm resulted in complete clinical recovery. Features of the outbreak were: 1) the hitherto unreco

Gastrointestinal helminths in dogs from a humane shelter in Indiana.

Between January 1975 and August 1976, the alimentary tracts of 104 euthanatized dogs from a humane shelter in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, were examined to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths. The survey was restricted to dogs greater than 1 year old. Their average age was estimated at approximately 2 years. Parasitism was detected in 86.5% of the dogs examined. Ancylostoma caninum was found most often (58.7%), followed by Trichuris vulpis (51.9%), Taenia sp (31.7%), Toxocara canis (18.3%), Dipylidium caninum (16.3%), Toxascaris leonina (8.7%), and Physaloptera rara (3.8%).
