Isolated partial tear of extensor digitorum longus tendon with overlying muscle herniation in acute ankle sports injury: role of high resolution musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Lateral Ankle sprain is a common sports-related trauma with the mechanism of injury ranging from inversion to plantar flexion. These injuries commonly affect the ligaments but can also affect the associated soft tissue structures like the eversion muscles and tendons. Prompt and accurate diagnosis of such injuries is warranted so as to ensure early return to play and prevent long-term complications. Lateral ankle sprain injuries in sports may not always be associated with ligament injuries. We report a never before reported case of lateral ankle sprain injury in a soccer player with the unusua

Acute Compartment Syndrome of the Leg Following Injury to Perforating Branch of Peroneal Artery After a Severe Ankle Sprain in a Pediatric Patient - A Case and a Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) of the leg is seen most often following severe fractures, crush injuries, burns, tight casts, … ter cast. CONCLUSION: ACS of leg is often associated with high-energy trauma and rarely seen after ankle injuries. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of compartment syndrome developing in a pediatric patient following inversion sprain of ankle, leading to rupture of perforating peroneal vessel in the leg.

Malleolar fractures and their ligamentous injury equivalents have similar outcomes in supination-external rotation type IV fractures of the ankle treated by anatomical internal fixation.

It has previously been suggested that among unstable ankle fractures, the presence of a malleolar fracture is associated with a worse outcom … groups with regard to the FAOS or range of movement. In this population of strictly defined SER IV ankle injuries, the presence of a malleolar fracture was not associated with a significantly worse clinical outcome than its ligamentous injury counterpart. Other factors inherent to the injury and treatment may play a more important role in predicting outcome.

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation based on wrist-ankle acupuncture theory on the skeletal muscle repair and gut microbiota modulation in rats with gastrocnemius muscle injury.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the gut microbiota has attracted considerable attention as a critical regulator of inflammation and metabolism, particularly due to its involvement in muscle repair via the "gut-muscle axis." This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation based on wrist-ankle acupuncture theory (WAA-TENS) in a rat model of gastrocnemius muscle injury, and subsequently to explore whether its effects are associated with alterations in the gut microbiota. METHODS: Twenty-four 8-week-old rats were randomly allocated to three groups

The effects of isolated ankle strengthening and functional balance training on strength, running mechanics, postural control and injury prevention in novice runners: design of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors have been proposed for running injuries including (a) reduced muscular strength, (b) excessive joint movements and (c) excessive joint moments in the frontal and transverse planes. To date, many running injury prevention programs have focused on a "top down" approach to strengthen the hip musculature in the attempt to reduce movements and moments at the hip, knee, and/or ankle joints. However, running mechanics did not change when hip muscle strength increased. It could be speculated that emphasis should be placed on increasing the strength of the ankle joint for a "gr

The distally based neurocutaneous sural flap: a good choice for reconstruction of soft tissue defects of lower leg, foot and ankle due to fourth degree burn injury.

OBJECTIVE: Debridment of fourth degree burn wound usually leads to soft tissue loss. If these wound are on distal one-third of lower leg and ankle, a simple wound changes to a complex problem. Options are available for these conditions, but each of them have advantages and disadvantages. The distally based neurocutaneous sural flap is one recent flap available for this problem which has excellent results and decreased disadvantages. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2004, all patients with acute fourth degree burns or unstable scar on the distal third of lower leg, foot or ankle that referred to our

Case Report: Distal tibial physeal injury secondary to conservative treatment of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis resulting in ankle deformity - highlighting the necessity of regular follow-up.

Ankle deformities most commonly result from physeal injuries following major trauma; those secondary to occult physeal injury without significant antecedent trauma are rarely documented. We report a case of ankle deformity in a 13-year-old boy resulting from distal tibial physeal injury following conservative treatment for acute hematogenous osteomyelitis(AHO) four years earlier; despite initial clinical improvement, the patient was subsequently lost to follow-up. At his return visit, significant ankle discomfort severely compromised daily activities. Following combined distal tibial osteotomy

Effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation on cortical network modulation and functional recovery in patients with chronic ankle injury following surgery: study protocol for randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Single-modality motor rehabilitation is often insufficient to address the complex functional restoration needs of patients with chronic ankle injuries following surgery. Research indicates that non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, such as intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), may enhance motor recovery by increasing cortical excitability and facilitating neural network reorganisation. Compared with exercise therapy alone, this study aims to explore the rehabilitation efficacy of combining iTBS with exercise therapy in patients with chronic ankle injuries following surg…

A magnetic resonance imaging safe distance beyond the flexor hallucis longus tendon and the application of the safe arthroscopic approach to prevent neurovascular injury in posterior ankle arthroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon is used as a medial landmark for posterior ankle arthroscopy. However, some posterior ankle pathologies require working medial to the FHL. The safe distance beyond the FHL to the neurovascular bundle has never been established. PURPOSE: To report the safe distances beyond the FHL and neurovascular bundle and the incidence of neurovascular injury after using "safe arthroscopic approach". METHODS: The 63 MRIs with posterior ankle pathologies were included. Measurements were the FHL-tibial nerve (TN) and FHL-posterior tibial artery (PTA) dista

Case Report: Staged treatment of ankle deformity and first metatarsal deficiency after motorcycle spoke injury with Taylor external frame combined with fibular head grafting.

The treatment of the sequelae of severe foot injuries caused by motorcycle spoke injury, especially in pediatric patients, allows for new options and surgical protocols. The tarsometatarsal joint and the first metatarsal were reconstructed by precise preoperative design using the TSF space external fixation technique in one stage to correct the foot deformity and restore the volume and length, and free grafting of the fibular head with epiphysis in the second stage. This method is the first of its kind reported. The patient's foot deformity was corrected, walking, walking up and down stairs, a

Comparison of the quality of life in individuals with spinal cord injury wearing either reciprocating gait orthosis or hip knee ankle foot orthosis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The quality of life (QoL) for patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI) is lower than that for healthy individuals. The main purpose of prescribing orthoses for these individuals is to improve their mobility and QoL. The hip knee ankle foot orthosis (HKAFO) has been the conventional choice for such patients, whilst the reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO) is a more contemporary option. Although the impact of these two types of orthoses on the biomechanics of walking has been previously evaluated in patients with SCI, there has been no specific comparison of their relative effects on Qo

Imaging of Acute Ankle and Foot Sprains.

Ankle and foot injuries are very common injuries in the general population, and more so in athletes. MR imaging is the optimal modality to evaluate for ligamentous injuries of the ankle and associated conditions after ankle sprain. In this article, the authors discuss the epidemiology, biomechanics, normal anatomy, and pathology of the ankle as well as injuries of the hindfoot and midfoot that are often associated with ankle injuries.

Suture button versus syndesmotic screw fixation in acute ankle fractures with syndesmotic injury: An umbrella review of functional outcomes and clinical relevance based on the minimal clinically important difference.

BACKGROUND: Literature increasingly suggests that suture button (SB) fixation yields higher functional outcome scores, specifically the American Orthopaedic Foot Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle-Hindfoot score and the Olerud-Molander Ankle Score (OMAS), compared with syndesmotic screws (SS). This umbrella review evaluates whether these differences extend beyond statistical significance and meet thresholds for clinical relevance, using the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) as reference standard. METHOD: A comprehensive PubMed search identified systematic reviews and meta-analyses publi

Assessment of the Shank-to-Vertical Angle While Changing Heel Heights Using a Single Inertial Measurement Unit in Individuals with Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Wearing an Ankle-Foot-Orthosis.

Previous research showed that an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) on the anterior side of the shank can accurately measure the Shank-to-Vertical Angle (SVA), which is a clinically-used parameter to guide tuning of ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). However, in this context it is specifically important that differences in the SVA are detected during the tuning process, i.e., when adjusting heel height. This study investigated the validity of the SVA as measured by an IMU and its responsiveness to changes in AFO-footwear combination (AFO-FC) heel height in persons with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSC
