One hundred and seven patients underwent epikeratophakia for either adult or pediatric aphakia, keratoconus or myopia at the Ohio State University. Minimum follow-up was 3 months. There were four graft removals. Objective postoperative refractions revealed that an average of 70, 72, and 54% of all patients achieved at least 20/40 acuity in adult aphakia, keratoconus and myopia, respectively. PURPOSE: To report a case of an immunocompetent patient who developed cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis after complicated cataract surgery resulting in aphakia.
OBSERVATIONS: A 67-year-old man with type 2 diabetes developed retinitis six months after cataract surgery that resulted in aphakia. Anterior chamber DNA testing was positive for CMV. Comprehensive systemic work-up revealed no immune insufficiency. Treatment of patients with aphakia and increased intraocular pressure by beta-blockers is sufficiently effective. Instillations of these agents decreases ophthalmic tone in patients with aphakia combined with primary glaucoma and in those with aphakic glaucoma. Intraocular pressure decreased in 70% patients and the effect persisted for at least 3 months in the majority of cases.

This survey describes ultrasound measurement techniques and echograms of living phakic and cataract eyes. Results of clinical echometry on emmetropic and ametropic eyes are reported.
