PICA.

"PICA" means perverted appetite for substances not fit as food or of no nutritional value such as, bricks, clay, soil, ice, laundry starch, etc. The word ''PICA'' is derived from Latin word for Magpie, a species of bird that feeds on whatever it encounters. ''PICA'' has been observed in ethnic groups worldwide in primitive and modern cultures, in both sexes and in all age groups. The case presented here reports a 30 year old female patient who had craving for ingestion of gravel and brick fragments since the age of 13 years. Iron deficiency anemia was found after complete blood count and iron

Neuroinflammation: a contributing factor to the pathogenesis of cancer cachexia.

The clinical journey of cancer patients is frequently complicated by the development of a complex and multifaceted syndrome, the main features of which are reduced appetite, decreased food intake, progressive weight loss, and wasting of muscle mass and adipose tissue, which is not prevented by the provision of calories and proteins. This syndrome, termed Cachexia, is responsible for increased morbidity, reduced survival, and impinged quality of life of cancer patients. The pathogenesis is complex and involves deranged metabolism of peripheral tissues and profound alterations of brain neurochem

Reptile geriatrics.

Although basic notions, such as life expectancy, and thus what constitutes old age, remain to be determined in the vast majority of reptile species, there is a tendency at least for captive reptiles to live longer now than in the past. Clinicians are expected to recognize signs of senescence or old age in reptile patients, to acquire a heightened index of suspicion for diseases likely to affect older individuals of a given species or taxon, and to provide sound advice on geriatric care of such patients. Reptiles are stoic and show few signs of aging, but subtle changes in behavior, mobility, r

Rhabdomyolysis and drug abuse in a patient with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa, have long been associated with alcohol and illicit drug abuse. Impulsivity has been linked to substance abuse, but there are other explanations for this association. This comorbidity could be very harmful, even deadly, because of the medical consequences of drug abuse. METHOD: This article reports on the case of a 23-year-old woman with bulimia nervosa, severe alcohol and illicit drug abuse, and impulsive behavior who developed rhabdomyolysis. One of the reasons for her drug addiction was the effect of these substances in appetite sup

The Huntington disease of woody guthrie: another man done gone.

Woody Guthrie was an American songwriter, musician, writer, and political activist who died with Huntington disease (HD) in 1967 at age 55. His relatively brief creative life was incredibly productive with countless songs and a tremendous volume of letters to his name. His personal life was similarly driven with Woody having had 3 wives and at least 9 children and an insatiable appetite for traveling the United States. In this essay, I explore Guthrie's art in relation to the development of the overt behavioral changes and chorea that characterized his illness. Woody's most productive time art

No appetite efficacy of a commercial structured lipid emulsion in minimally processed drinks.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fabuless (Olibra) is a commercially structured lipid emulsion, claimed to be a food ingredient that is effective for food intake and appetite reduction. The present study assessed its efficacy in a yoghurt-based mini-drink undergoing low or minimal food manufacturing (thermal and shear) processes. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Study 1: Twenty-four healthy volunteers (16 female, 8 male; age: 18-47 years; body mass index (BMI): 17-28 kg m(-2)) took part in a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind parallel crossover trial. Consumption of a minimally processed 'preload' mini-drin

Neurobiological mechanisms of second-generation antipsychotic-induced obesity: Interactions between ghrelin signaling and neurotransmitter systems.

Second-generation (atypical) antipsychotics are central to the treatment of schizophrenia and related disorders but are frequently associated with significant metabolic adverse effects, particularly weight gain and obesity. These complications can impair treatment adherence and substantially increase the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic comorbidities. Accumulating evidence indicates that antipsychotic-induced metabolic dysregulation arises from complex interactions between central neurotransmitter systems and neuroendocrine regulators of appetite and energy balance. Among these, the orexig

Obesity and emerging intervention strategies: Mechanistic insights and novel drug targets.

Obesity, a global public health crisis driven by complex interactions of genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors, necessitates innovative therapeutic strategies. This review explores the pathogenesis of obesity, emphasizing genetic determinants, metabolic dysregulation, gut microbiota alterations, and energy imbalance. The evolution of anti-obesity pharmacotherapy has progressed from the use of high-risk agents such as amphetamines and thyroid extracts to modern gut hormone-based therapies, notably glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), which effectively suppress appetite

Dual Role of LH-GABA Neurons in Encoding Alcohol Reward and Aversive Memories.

One of the core aspects of alcohol use disorder is continued use despite negative consequences. Individuals with an alcohol use disorder typically engage in behaviors which represent a failure to integrate the aversive consequences of their actions. The neural mechanisms of learning about conflicting experiences remain poorly understood. Previous research has highlighted the critical role of GABAergic neurons in the lateral hypothalamus (LH-GABA) in rewarding memories. However, whether this role extends to aversive outcomes and competition between rewarding and aversive outcomes remains unexpl

Chronic Timed Sleep Restriction Attenuates LepRb-Mediated Signaling Pathways and Circadian Clock Gene Expression in the Rat Hypothalamus.

The sleep duration of adolescents has continued to decline over the past 20 years. Sleep insufficiency is one of the most important risk factors for obesity, but the mechanisms underlying the association are unclear. Therefore, the hypothalamic-regulated mechanisms of appetite and the circadian clock gene expression were examined in sleep-restricted rats. Rats aged 7 weeks were randomly divided into two groups: the control group and sleep restriction group (7 rats/group) rats were sleep-restricted for 4 weeks. Body weight gain and amount of food/water consumption were quantified. The expressio

Hypothalamic- and pituitary-derived growth and reproductive hormones and the control of energy balance in fish.

Most endocrine systems in the body are influenced by the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Within this axis, the hypothalamus delivers precise signals to the pituitary gland, which in turn releases hormones that directly affect target tissues including the liver, thyroid gland, adrenal glands and gonads. This action modulates the release of additional hormones from the sites of action, regulating key physiological processes, including growth, metabolism, stress and reproduction. Pituitary hormones are released by five distinct hormone-producing cell types: somatotropes (which produce growth hormone

Cloning and effects of fasting on the brain expression levels of appetite-regulators and reproductive hormones in glass catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus).

The regulation of feeding is a complex process that involves coordination between various signals. Feeding hormones can be described as orexigenic (stimulate food intake, e.g. orexin and neuropeptide Y - NPY) or anorexigenic (inhibit food intake, e.g. cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript - CART). Reproduction and energy homeostasis are closely linked, as factors that affect appetite have also been shown to influence reproductive hormones and behaviors. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is one of the most influential factors controlling reproduction. Although our understanding of th

Blockade of central delta-opioid receptors inhibits salt appetite in sodium-depleted rats.

Various studies have investigated the role of central opioid peptides in feeding behavior; however, only a few have addressed the participation of opioids in the control of salt appetite. The present study investigated the effect of intracerebroventricular injections of the δ-opioid antagonist, naltrindole (5, 10 and 20 nmol/rat) and the agonist, deltorphin II (2.5, 5, 10 and 20 nmol/rat) on salt intake. Two protocols for inducing salt intake were used: sodium-depletion and the central injection of angiotensin II. In addition, the effect of a central δ-opioid receptor blockade on locomotor act

Role of brain orexin in the pathophysiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Orexins are neuropeptides that are localized in neurons within the lateral hypothalamic area and regulate feeding behavior. The lateral hypothalamic area plays an important role in not only feeding but the central regulation of other functions including gut physiology. Accumulating evidence have shown that orexins acts in the brain to regulate a wide variety of body functions including gastrointestinal functions. METHOD: The purpose of this review is to summarize relevant findings on brain orexins and a digestive system, and discuss the pathophysiological roles of the pept

Characteristics of salt appetite in chronically sodium-depleted rats using a progressive ratio schedule of procurement.

Satiation of sodium appetite of rats was studied using a protocol of sodium loss induced by chronic diuretic treatment and daily salt consumption sessions. In the first experiment in which NaCl was freely available from a drinking spout, rats consumed substantially more hypertonic NaCl than their estimated physiological deficit. In the second and third experiments, a simulated foraging cost was imposed on obtaining NaCl. In these experiments, rats were required to perform a progressive ratio lever press task to procure aliquots of hypertonic NaCl, and under these conditions they showed a break

Sleep problems in children with autism.

Autism is a developmental disability characterized by severe deficits in social interaction and communication, and the presence of repetitive-ritualistic behaviors. Sleep problems are frequently reported by parents of children with autism with prevalence estimates of 44-83% for sleep disorders in this population. To better understand sleep in autism, we surveyed sleep problems in 210 children with autism using a Likert-based questionnaire for parent report. The most frequently reported sleep problems included difficulty in falling asleep, restless sleep, not falling asleep in own bed, and freq

Influence of housing conditions on the effects of serotonergic drugs on feeding behavior in non-deprived rats.

Serotonin plays an important role in the regulation of food and water intake, and drugs that inhibit the uptake of this neurotransmitter have been used as appetite suppressors. As the clinical usage of anorectics necessarily involves chronic drug administration, the effects of chronic treatment in animals are likely to be of greater clinical relevance than acute drug effects. Besides, little effort has been made to examine whether these effects interact with stressful situations, such as isolation. We have therefore examined the effects of fluoxetine, a selective 5-HT reuptake inhibitor, and g

Acute sodium depletion modifies septo-preoptic neuron sensitivities to neurohormones.

Sodium (Na+) depletion induces sodium appetite to replenish Na+ loss. It appears to be a consequence of enhanced levels of aldosterone (Aldo) and angiotensin II (AII) in the plasma as well as in the brain. Mineralocorticoid pretreatment modifies the sensitivity of septo-preoptic neurons to locally applied AII and Aldo. Therefore, we investigated septo-preoptic neuronal sensitivities to AII and Aldo, as well as to the specific AII type-1 receptor (AT-1) non-peptide antagonist losartan (Los) and to the specific AII type-2 receptor (AT-2) non-peptide antagonist PD123319 after one Na+ depletion wi

Repeated Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Induces Behavioral, Metabolic and Neurochemical Effects in Rats on High-Calorie Diet.

Due to its high prevalence, obesity is considered an epidemic, which stimulated research on non-invasive methods to reduce excess body fat. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique used to modulate the activity of cerebral cortex, which has already found increasing interest in medicine as a promising methodology. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of tDCS on feeding behavior, metabolic abnormalities and neurotransmitters in certain brain areas involved in appetite control of obese rats. The male Wistar rats were divided into five subgroups dependi

A potent and selective NPY Y5 antagonist reduces food intake but not through blockade of the NPY Y5 receptor.

AIM: These studies were performed to test the hypothesis that endogenous neuropeptide Y (NPY) acting on the NPY Y(5) receptor subtype contributes to the control of food intake. The hypothesis was tested using S 25585-a newly synthesized NPY Y(5) receptor antagonist. METHODS AND RESULTS: S 25585 was shown to be a high-affinity antagonist of the NPY Y(5) receptor subtype (IC(50) 5 nM) with no significant affinity toward other NPY receptor subtypes and over 40 other receptors, channels or uptake systems. S 25585 (7.5 mg/kg, i.p.) did not induce a conditioned taste aversion, significantly alter n
