This clinical lesson, based on two case histories, illustrates a complication seen after manipulation of the rectal wall in patients who have undergone radiotherapy for localised prostate cancer. Rectal bleeding, which is feared by patients, can be the first sign of radiation proctitis. Manipulation of the rectal wall, for example by taking biopsies or Argon plasma coagulation, should be done with caution and only if absolutely necessary, because it can lead to fistula formation.

The Nd:YAG laser, the CO2 laser, and the argon laser have all been used as cutting or hemostatic tools in open urologic surgery and in the treatment of skin lesions of the genitalia with the choice of instrument being dictated by the characteristics of each wavelength. Results to date in open surgical applications have not been dramatic. For the treatment of benign and malignant lesions of the external genitalia, lasers may prove to have a significant advantage over existing methods of treatment.

The nonaccessibility of phenyl cations by irradiation of electron-poor aryl chlorides was circumvented by transforming the carbonyl group of aromatic ketones or aldehydes into the corresponding 1,3-dioxolanes and the carboxyl group of benzoate ester into an orthoester functionality. This transformation allowed the heterolytic photoactivation of the Ar-Cl bond in protic media and the generation of phenyl cations. In the presence of π-bond nucleophiles, arylated products were obtained in good to excellent yields.

The steady-state sensitivity of resistance pneumotachographs is proportional to viscosity. Dynamic characteristics of pneumotachographs, pressure transducers, and mass spectrometers are also viscosity dependent. We derive linear equations to approximate the viscosities of O2, N2, CO2, H2O, He, N2O, and Ar for temperatures between 20 and 40 degrees C by using published viscosity data and a nonlinear extrapolation equation. The photochemistry of phosphabut-1-yne, CH3CH2CP, was investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy assisted by theoretical (DFT) predictions. The UV-irradiated compound, isolated in a cryogenic argon matrix, undergoes isomerization and dissociation. Several isomers of phosphabutyne, in addition to phosphabutadiyne (HC3P), ethynylphosphinidene (HCCP), and phoshaethyne (HCP) are formed as the main photoproducts. Vibrational spectra of astrochemically relevant molecules HC3P and CH2CHCP (vinylphosphaethyne), have been detected and analyzed here for the first time.

A technique embodying the use of chemical agents and the argon laser was developed in the 1981-1982 that provides for a more complete removal of tattoo dye with one treatment. The number of visits for the laser treatment to the patient is reduced to two or three treatment sessions, compared to five to eight visits previously required. The area of "chemo-laser" approximated the normal skin without hypertrophic scar tissue more than the areas of multiple or heavy laser treatment.
