Takayasu arteritis is a rare, chronic vasculitis of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation of the aorta and its main branches. Although Takayasu arteritis mostly affects women of childbearing age, there is a paucity in the literature on pregnancy associated with Takayasu arteritis. Pregnant patients are at increased risk of cardiovascular complications, including hypertension and congestive heart failure, which may jeopardize both maternal and fetal outcomes. Furthermore, optimal management has not yet been established for pregnant patients with Takayasu arteritis, posing a clinical ch…

OBJECTIVES: Takayasu's arteritis (TAK) is a rare vasculitis affecting the large blood vessels with significant morbidity and mortality from ischemic complications. The objective of this meta-analysis is to determine the proportion of TAK patients with severe ischemic complications.
METHODS: We performed a literature search using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane library from database inception to March 2016. We included articles that reported at least one severe ischemic complication. A random effects model with inverse-variance weighting was performed to estimate the pooled proportion of TAK…

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is rare. Although Kawasaki disease (KD) has been reported as a precursor to HLH, coronary arteritis occurring at the onset of secondary HLH, not in association with KD, has not been reported. An 8-year-old girl presented with virus-induced secondary HLH associated with a giant aneurysm and ectasia of the coronary arteries which was detected incidentally at onset of the disease. She did not fulfill the criteria for diagnosis of KD. The coronary lesions improved after 6 months of treatment with dexamethasone and etoposide. Echocardiography early in the c…

Knowledge of the natural history and epidemiology of giant cell arteritis (GCA) is growing. With the recent conceptual change, GCA is no longer considered a disease with mandatory cranial symptoms but, rather, a larger disease spectrum also including idiopathic aortitis in people older than 50 and polymyalgia rheumatica with large-vessel involvement. The incidence peak between age 70 and 80 years, greater frequency in females and greater occurrence in Nordic countries are well-established epidemiological characteristics. Conversely, the notion that the incidence of GCA is increasing is challen…

OBJECTIVES: Takayasu arteritis is a relatively rare chronic nonspecific form of large-vessel vasculitis in which the involved vessels develop stenoses, occlusions, dilatations or aneurysms, and dissections. Dissections of the arteries in patients with Takayasu arteritis are not well understood. In this study, we explored the sonographic characterization of these rare complications secondary to Takayasu arteritis.
METHODS: We evaluated arterial dissections in 72 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis by vascular sonography and transthoracic echocardiography. We analyzed the d…

OBJECTIVE: There is paucity of data for Takayasu arteritis (TAK) among South Asians. We aimed to evaluate the clinical features, angiographic findings, as well as treatment and outcome of TAK among Malaysian multiethnic groups.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 40 patients with TAK seen in major rheumatology centres in Malaysia between April 2006 and September 2013.
RESULTS: Majority were female patients (92.5%), with a female-to-male ratio of 12:1. Median duration of disease from diagnosis was 66 months (interquartile range, 33-177 months). Fifteen (37.5%) were Malays, 9 (22.5%) ea…

Takaysu arteritis (TA), together with fibromuscular dysplasia, is the most common cause for renovascular hypertension. The diagnosis of vasculitis is important to make as these children benefit from immunosuppressive treatment. In many cases, however, it is more difficult than commonly realised to differentiate between these two diagnoses. Imaging which allows the inflamed arterial wall to be outlined, such as magnetic resonance or positron emission tomography scans, can be very helpful in this context. Revascularisation, either with angioplasty or surgery, seems to be effective and safe, also…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to build population pharmacokinetic models for the clearance of carbamazepine (CBZ) in two separate populations of Serbian patients with epilepsy, children and adults.
METHODS: Analysis was performed using 114 and 53 steady-state concentrations of CBZ collected from 98 children and 53 adult epileptic patients, respectively. Mean values of total body weight and age were 31 ± 13 kg and 8 ± 3 years in the population of children, and 67 ± 13 kg and 32 ± 15 years in the population of adults. Giant cell arteritis (GCA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) are two closely related diseases in people aged 50 years and older, which are more frequently observed in Western countries. Despite being common entities, concern still exists about the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of both entities. New imaging techniques, such as 18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography, have proved to be useful in detecting large-vessel involvement in GCA. Corticosteroids are the cornerstone of the therapy in GCA and PMR. Relapses are frequent in these conditions. Unlike methotrexate and tumo…

Vasculitides are rare rheumatic diseases of unknown etiology whose main characteristic is a necrotizing inflammation of blood vessels. We are presenting two patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) as entity forms of rare rheumatic diseases. One patient had TA type IIa and the other type IV. In the first patient we found severe symptoms of obstructive lesions of aortic branches, particularly severe coronary artery stenosis and complete occlusion of the left subclavian artery, and thoracic artery stenosis below the isthmus. The disease was diagnosed in the acute phase, treated extensively with med…

OBJECTIVE: To assess ovarian reserve markers in patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA).
METHODS: Twenty patients with TA and 24 healthy controls were evaluated for ovarian reserve by follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and estradiol, and antral follicle count (AFC). Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) was measured by ELISA using 2 different kits. Demographical data, menstrual abnormalities, disease variables, and treatment were also analyzed.
RESULTS: The median current age was similar in patients with TA and controls (31.2 ± 6.1 vs 30.4 ± 6.9 yrs, p = 0.69). The frequencies of decrea…

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) and Crohn's disease (CD) are two rare autoimmune disorders; however some reports describe the presence of both diseases in the same patient. This finding has suggested the possibility that both diseases could share some common etiologic origin. We describe a case of a 13-year-old male affected by CD characterized by fever, diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain and elevation of inflammatory markers. Clinical and histological features from colonic specimens were consistent with CD. Treatment with steroids and azathioprine was started, however disease flared every time s…

Takayasu arteritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects large arteries such as the aorta and its proximal branches. The association between Takayasu arteritis and ulcerative colitis is an extremely rare condition. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, clinical presentation is not specific and may mimic Crohn's disease, radiation colitis, ischemic colitis, a variety of infectious processes, and colitis related to medications. Herein we report a case of Takayasu arteritis who had been misdiagnosed and treated as ulcera-

Renovascular hypertension (RVH) can be caused by many different diseases, with the most common being fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) and Takayasu arteritis (TA). A strikingly different diagnostic pattern is seen in children with RVH from different parts of the world. In Europe and North America, these children are mainly diagnosed as having FMD while in Asia and South Africa they will most often get a diagnosis of TA. When comparing the clinical diagnosis for FMD and TA, it becomes obvious that there is a great deal of overlap between the definitions of these two conditions. Different ways to co…

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a medium and large vessel vasculitis, defined as a nonspecific aortitis that usually involves the aorta and its branches Kobayashi and Numano (2002). Its etiology remains unclear, and its complications are diverse and severe, including stenosis of the thoracic and abdominal aorta, aortic valve damage and regurgitation, and stenosis of the branches of the aorta. Carotid stenosis, coronary artery aneurysms, and renal artery stenosis resulting in renovascular hypertension are also reported sequellae of TA Kobayashi and Numano (2002). The disease was first described in…

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is an idiopathic chronic inflammatory disease of the connective tissue that affects mainly the aorta and its branches. Treatment is mainly based on corticosteroids and immunosuppressants. We report the case of a 33-year-old female complaining of malaise, fever, myalgia, severe pulsing holocranial headache resistant to analgesics, systemic arterial hypertension hard to control, right lower limb claudication, and severe abdominal pain that worsened after the meals. Angiotomography revealed aneurysm of the ascending aorta, and stenosis of the following vessels: right com…

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a rare, idiopathic, inflammatory, granulomatous vasculitis that affects the aorta and its primary branches. Clinical features and the pattern of arterial involvement show differences in different regions of the world according to ethnic influences. Our aim in this retrospective study was to evaluate the demographic, clinic, laboratory, and angiographic findings of 22 patients with TA followed by our clinic and also compare our results with series from the literature. The hospital files of the 22 patients followed by our clinic between 1998 and 2009 were retrospecti…

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most common autoinflammatory disease characterized by recurrent self-limited attacks of fever, accompanied with peritonitis, pleuritis or arthritis. It is well known that FMF may coexist with vasculitic pathologies, especially with those involving small and medium vessels. Among the vasculitic pathologies reported to be associated with FMF, Henoch-Schönlein purpura and polyarteritis nodosa come the first, possibly followed up by protracted febrile myalgia. However, coexistence of FMF with any large vessel vasculitis has not been reported to date. Here,…
