The theoretical perspective of the analysis conducted is linked to the fact that dental awareness should not be seen as something universal, independent from reality, though participating in its construction. This paper explores the idea symbolized in the colonization of contemporary Dentistry awareness to beyond « the more human than human ». With the example of the increasing pathologization of halitosis, as an objective disorder not only of oral health, but that affects individuals, this work develops an analysis of the (re)invention of pathologies, through visualization technologies in lat

Obesity is recognized as playing an important role in causing snoring and in turning simple snoring into obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). From our series of patients with sleep disturbances, we studied a group of 43 normal-weight snorers in whom we detected a significant number of OSAS episodes. An articulated diagnostic protocol was adopted, and Müller's maneuver was extensively applied. The resulting data were compared to data from a group of 43 obese patients from the same series. The major risk factor for developing OSAS in normal-weight snorers appears to be anatomic abnormalities

A 12-year-old boy was referred because of abdominal pain, gross hematuria, and passage of stones. Further evaluation showed growth delay, low average range of intellectual functioning, and a speech articulation disorder. No signs of self-mutilation or self-injurious behavior were present. He had hyperuricemia, hyperuricosuria, uric acid crystalluria, uric acid calculi, macrocytosis, megaloblastic bone marrow changes, and mild anemia. Hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) enzyme activity was reduced to approximately 26% of normal. Polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational p

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed the prevalence of traumatic life events and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among women with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and co-occurring substance abuse or dependence. The association between PTSD and specific traumatic life events was also examined.
METHODS: Fifty-four drug-addicted women with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder participated in the study. All women were psychiatric outpatients and completed a large battery of structured clinical assessments.
RESULTS: High rates of trauma, particularly physical abuse (81 percent), and

To determine the relation between developmental dysphasia and EEG anomalies during sleep, we compared 52 subjects with dysphasia with a control group of 20 children by using the ambulatory EEG method. Whereas 50% of the children with dysphasia experienced paroxysmal activity (PA), only two of the control group did. It is likely that paroxysmal abnormalities and language impairment are related to architectural dysplasia and neuron-migration disturbances. PA is frequent in subjects with receptive developmental dysphasia and may be the cause of language deterioration. When the occurrence of parox

PURPOSE: Acoustic analysis is an objective and quantitative method in diagnosing speech disorders and evaluating treatment efficacy. Although many reports have used acoustic analysis for oral cancer patients, few studies have focused on the extent of tongue resection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of acoustic analysis in the assessment of postoperative speech impairment in oral cancer patients.
METHODS: Postoperative speech data as well as Speech Handicap Index (SHI) and 5-point speech intelligibility scale were collected from 65 patients including 31 cases of oral canc

The purpose of this paper is to present a tutorial on a diagnostic framework developed to assess children who stutter and exhibit co-existing disorders. While we have guidelines for treating these children, there are no specific guidelines for assessing them. We provide a rationale for the development of T-PALS with support from the literature. The T-PALS framework assesses 5 foundational key elements for the child: Temperament (T), Pragmatics (P), Articulation/phonology (A), Language (L), and Stuttering (S). Both qualitative and quantitative measures are used within each dimension. This frame

In certain circumstances, speech and language therapy is proposed in telepractice as a practical alternative to in-person services. However, little is known about the minimum quality requirements of recordings in the teleassessment of motor speech disorders (MSD) utilizing validated tools. The aim here is to examine the comparability of offline analyses based on speech samples acquired from three sources: (1) in-person recordings with high quality material, serving as the baseline/gold standard; (2) in-person recordings with standard equipment; (3) online recordings from videoconferencing. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder causing progressive proximal muscular, respiratory, and bulbar weakness. We present outcome data on motor function, ventilation, nutrition, and language development of SMA patients treated with nusinersen in Switzerland. This multicenter, observational study included 44 patients. At treatment initiation, after 2 months and then every 4 months we assessed motor function with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Infant Test of Neuromuscular Disorders (CHOP-INTEND), Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale expanded (HFMSE) and 6-Minute

In the context of comparing linguistic profiles across neurodevelopmental disorders, Down syndrome (DS) has captured growing attention for its uneven profile. Although specific weaknesses in grammatical and phonological processing have been reported, research evidence on phonological development remains scarce, particularly beyond early childhood. The purpose of this study was to explore the phonological profiles of children and adolescents with Down syndrome. The profiles were based on the frequency and relative proportion of the processes observed by classes, and they were compared to those

The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to compare the recurrence rate and speech outcomes between two techniques for palatal fistula … groups and significance was observed in the hinge-flap group (P = 0.013, P < 0.001, respectively). Articulation disorders were significantly improved in the hinge-flap group (P = 0.001). Within the limitations of the study it seems that the single hinge-flap method with double-breasted mattress suture should be preferred whenever appropriate.

Proximal row carpectomy (PRC) is a generally accepted procedure in the treatment of an advanced radiocarpal arthrosis. The aim of this retrospective study was the evaluation of individual, functional and radiological results after proximal row carpectomy. Seventeen patients (15 male, two female) who had undergone proximal row carpectomy between 1991 and 1999, were reviewed. The most common indication was degenerative arthrosis secondary to carpal collapse associated with chronic scaphoid nonunion (SNAC), scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC) deformity, late Kienböck's disease or perilunate dis

The literature reports that 70% of the cases of sinus tarsi syndrome are post-traumatic, following an inversion sprain, and that 30% result from inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and gouty arthritis. However, in the case presented, talipes equinovarus deformity and sinus tarsi syndrome coexisted. One of the corrective goals in the management of the talipes equinovarus deformity is the realignment of the articulation between the medial plantarly deviated talar head and the anteromedial segment of the calcaneus. The calcaneus must be rotated from a pla

The goal of this paper is to present an overview of new tools that can be used to further our understanding of phonological development and disorders. We begin with a summary of the field of child phonology with a focus on databases and methods of analysis and then move to a description of PhonBank, a shared database for the study of phonology, and Phon, a specialised software system capable of performing various types of phonological analyses based on both phonetic transcriptions and acoustic analyses of speech productions. We provide a detailed example of using PhonBank and Phon to examine t

PURPOSE: A phonological deficit is thought to affect most individuals with developmental dyslexia. The present study addresses whether the phonological deficit is caused by difficulties with perceptual learning of fine acoustic details.
METHOD: A demanding test of nonverbal auditory memory, "noise learning," was administered to both adults with dyslexia and control adult participants. On each trial, listeners had to decide whether a stimulus was a 1-s noise token or 2 abutting presentations of the same 0.5-s noise token (repeated noise). Without the listener's knowledge, the exact same noise

Whereas the neurobiological basis of developmental dyslexia has received substantial attention, only little is known about the processes in the brain during remediation. This holds in particular in light of recent findings on cognitive subtypes of dyslexia which suggest interactions between individual profiles, training methods, and also the task in the scanner. Therefore, we trained three groups of German dyslexic primary school children in the domains of phonology, attention, or visual word recognition. We compared neurofunctional changes after 4 weeks of training in these groups to those in

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to further the development of a treatment for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS), Sound Production Treatment (SPT), by examining the effects of blocked and random practice.
METHOD: A multiple-baseline design across participants and behaviors was used with 6 speakers with chronic AOS and aphasia. Accuracy of production of target sounds in treated and untreated words produced in probe sessions served as the primary dependent variable. Stimulus generalization was also measured to phrase production and sentence completion. Participants received SPT applied w
