Time reproduction in finger tapping tasks by children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and/or dyslexia.

AIM: Deficits in timing and sequencing behaviour in children with dyslexia and with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder have already been identified. However many studies have not controlled for comorbidity between dyslexia and ADHD. This study investigated timing performance of children with either dyslexia or ADHD, or ADHD + dyslexia or unaffected children using a finger tapping paradigm. METHOD: Four groups of children (ADHD x Dyslexia) with a total of 68 children were compared using a four factorial design with two between-subject factors (ADHD (yes/no), dyslexia (yes/no)) and two wi

Effects of event probability and sequence on children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity, reading, and math disorder.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the impact of stimulus probability and sequence on performance and event-related potentials of 310 children classified into 12 combinations of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (Not-attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Inattentive and Combined subtypes) with presence/absence of reading disorder and math disorder. METHODS: Subjects pressed buttons to displays of the letters O and X, which were presented with probabilities of either .17/.83 or .50/.50. Greater response selection was required in the .17/.83 condition. RESULTS: Stimulus probability had com

Sleep problems in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: impact of subtype, comorbidity, and stimulant medication.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship of sleep problems to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), diagnostic subtype, comorbid disorders, and the effects of stimulant treatment. METHOD: On the basis of clinical diagnostic interviews, children aged 6 to 12 years were assigned to 4 groups: unmedicated ADHD (n = 79), medicated ADHD (n = 22), clinical comparison (n = 35), and healthy nonclinical comparison (n = 36). These groups were compared on 2 sleep questionnaires completed by the parents that assessed current sleep problems and factors associated with sleep difficulties (i.e., s

Frontal lobe functions in attention deficit disorder with and without hyperactivity: a review and research report.

We review 22 neuropsychological studies of frontal lobe functions in children with attention deficit disorder with and without hyperactivity (ADD/+H, ADD/-H). Some measures presumed to assess frontal lobe dysfunctions were not reliably sensitive to the deficits occurring in either form of ADD. Tests of response inhibition more reliably distinguished ADD/+H from normal children. Where impairments were found on other tests between ADD and normal subjects, they were highly inconsistent across studies and seemed strongly related to age of the subjects and possibly to the version of the test employ

Dysregulated levels of proangiogenic proteins in the placentas of children with autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Placental vascularization may influence fetal brain development, but its long-term impact on neurodevelopment remains unclear. In this pilot study, we analyzed two ligand proteins: vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PLGF), and their receptors mRNA and protein levels in placentas from children who later were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or controls. ASD placentas showed lower VEGF, PLGF, and KDR protein levels but higher FLT1, while ADHD placentas had increased FLT1 and reduced VEGF mRNA. Thes

Assessing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Post-9/11 Veterans: Prevalence, Measurement Correspondence, and Comorbidity With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common among Veterans but overlapping symptoms with other prevalent psychiatric disorders (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) complicate diagnosis. This study aims to (1) assess the prevalence of ADHD, (2) evaluate the correspondence between ADHD self-report measures, and (3) examine the association between ADHD and PTSD in a sample of combat-deployed post-9/11 Veterans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 332 combat-deployed post-9/11 Veterans from VA Boston Healthcare System completed the Clinician-Administered PTSD Rat

Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS) for Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: Feasibility Study Protocol.

Symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are common, severe and highly impairing in children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), but often non-responsive to medication, leaving many with no beneficial treatment. External trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) is a minimal risk, non-invasive neuromodulatory intervention that is FDA-cleared for ADHD. No formal trial, however, has tested TNS in children with known PAE. We present here the protocol of the first clinical trial of TNS in children with ADHD associated with PAE. The study also uses multimodal MRI to explore possible b

Differences in alcohol and cannabis use amongst substance use disorder patients with and without comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) continue to be a public health problem. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is seen as a risk factor for SUD. Prevalence of alcohol and cannabis use amongst adults with SUD and comorbid ADHD impacts both disorders cognitively and behaviourally. AIM: Our study aimed to compare alcohol and cannabis use between treatment-seeking SUD patients with ADHD and SUD patients without ADHD symptomatology. SETTING: Various rehabilitation centres, including the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) Centres, and Priva

The influence of working memory load on response inhibition in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or reading disorder.

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between response inhibition and working memory in 8-12-year-old children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 19), reading disorder (RD; n = 17), ADHD + RD (n = 21), and control children (n = 19). For the first time a within-task methodology was used to study the combined effect of both executive functions on a common measure of task performance in two often comorbid childhood disorders, ADHD and RD. We found evidence of an interaction between both domains, suggesting that they rely on a common pool of resources.

Childhood maltreatment and conduct disorder: independent predictors of adolescent substance use disorders in youth with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at heightened risk for maltreatment and later substance use disorders (SUDs). We investigated the relationship of childhood maltreatment and other risk factors to SUDs among adolescents diagnosed with ADHD in childhood. Eighty adolescents diagnosed with ADHD when they were 7 to 11 years old were screened for histories of childhood maltreatment, and SUD diagnoses were formulated in accordance with the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Lifetime history of problematic substance use was obtain

Children with comorbid speech sound disorder and specific language impairment are at increased risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

This study focuses on the comorbidity between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and speech sound disorder (SSD). SSD is a developmental disorder characterized by speech production errors that impact intelligibility. Previous research addressing this comorbidity has typically used heterogeneous groups of speech-language disordered children. This study employed more precise speech-language diagnostic criteria and examined ADHD symptomatology in 108 SSD children between the ages of 4 and 7 years old with specific language impairment (SLI) (n = 23, 14 males, 9 females) and w

Can attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder be differentiated by motor and balance deficits?

There is an ongoing debate regarding the diagnostic overlap between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Differential diagnosis is important because of treatment implications. Children aged 7-10years (47 ADHD, 30 FASD, 39 controls) participated. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (M-ABC) and the Clinical Observations of Motor and Postural Skills (COMPS) were used. Force plate and electromyography data were collected during static balance and balance perturbation. On the M-ABC both children with ADHD and FASD had more motor proble

Long-term changes of hoarding symptoms among adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treated with methylphenidate.

UNLABELLED: Hoarding disorder (HD) has been consistently linked to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and ADHD patients show high rates of HD comorbidity. However, no studies have investigated the effects of ADHD medications on hoarding symptoms in patients with a primary diagnosis of ADHD. Thus, the aim of this naturalistic study was to investigate the long-term changes of hoarding symptoms among adult ADHD patients after at least one year of treatment with methylphenidate. METHODS: 60 newly diagnosed adult ADHD outpatients underwent a psychometric assessment which included hoa

Long-term changes on behavioral addictions symptoms among adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treated with methylphenidate.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and behavioral addictions (BAs) are highly comorbid but little is known about the effect of anti-ADHD medications on behavioral addiction symptoms. Thus, the aim of this naturalistic prospective study was to investigate the long-term changes on BAs symptoms among methylphenidate-treated adults with a primary diagnosis of ADHD. METHODS: 37 consecutive adult ADHD outpatients completed a baseline and follow-up assessment of ADHD, mood and BAs symptoms (internet, shopping, food, sex addictions and gambling disorder) after one year of met

Dynamic balance in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and its relationship with cognitive functions and cerebellum.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is linked to the presence of motor deficiencies, including balance deficits. The cerebellum serves as an integrative structure for balance control and is also involved in cognition, including timing and anticipatory regulation. Cerebellar development may be delayed in children and adolescents with ADHD, and inconsistent reaction time is commonly seen in ADHD. We hypothesized that dynamic balance deficits would be present in children with ADHD and they would correlate with attention and cerebellar functions. METHODS: Sixty-two childre

Response/remission with guanfacine extended-release and psychostimulants in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: In this post hoc analysis, we assessed whether guanfacine extended-release (GXR) adjunctive to a psychostimulant resulted in greater response and remission rates than placebo + psychostimulant in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: In this 9-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled dose-optimization study, participants (N = 461) aged 6 to 17 years with suboptimal response to psychostimulants were randomized to GXR on awakening (AM) + psychostimulant, GXR at bedtime (PM) + psychostimulant, or placebo + psychostimulant. Executive function in young males with Klinefelter (XXY) syndrome with and without comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Deficits in executive function (EF) are reported to occur in individuals with Klinefelter syndrome (XXY). The degree of impairment, if any, is variable and the nature of these deficits has not been clearly elucidated in young males. In this report, we (a) examine EF skills using multiple tasks in a non-clinic referred group of youth with XXY, (b) describe the extent of EF weaknesses in XXY when this group is compared with typical males of a similar SES or typical males with similar verbal abilities, and (c) evaluate the contribution of comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) t

Characterizing anatomic differences in boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with the use of deformation-based morphometry.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Most previous neuroimaging studies of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) rely on the manual delineation of the region of interest, which is subjective and lacks reproducibility. The purpose of this study was to use an automated method to assess whether there are abnormalities in the brains of patients with ADHD. In view of findings from previous imaging and neuropsychologic studies, we predicted that we would detect abnormalities in many brain regions of patients with ADHD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve boys with ADHD and 12 control subjects underwent MR i
