The effect of cold water intake on heart rate variability in young women: the co-activation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the autonomic nervous system's (ANS) influence on heart rate control. Daily essential activities, such as water ingestion, affect HRV. This study aims to investigate the effect of cold water intake on HRV in young, healthy females. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen healthy young females participated in the study during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle. R-R intervals were recorded using an ECG, 5 min before and 35 min after the ingestion. We used LabChart to determine HRV parameters from time (HR, rMSSD, pRR50) and frequency (LF, HF) dom…

The autonomic nervous system and the brainstem: A fundamental role or the background actors for consciousness generation? Hypothesis, evidence, and future directions for rehabilitation and theoretical approaches.

INTRODUCTION: One of the hardest challenges of the third century is to develop theories that could joint different results for a global expl … erenced from observed behaviors); and (c) data from neurostimulation of subcortical areas or of the autonomic nervous system. RESULTS: We sketch two speculative hypothesis relative, firstly, to the possible independence from cortical areas of the on/off mechanism for consciousness generation and, secondly, to the possible role of information variability generated by the …

Assessing the efficacy and safety of magnesium sulfate for management of autonomic nervous system dysregulation in Vietnamese children with severe hand foot and mouth disease.

BACKGROUND: Brainstem encephalitis is a serious complication of hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in children. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation and hypertension may occur, sometimes progressing to cardiopulmonary failure and death. Vietnamese national guidelines recommend use of milrinone if ANS dysregulation with Stage 2 hypertension develops. We wished to investigate whether magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) improved outcomes in children with HFMD if used earlier in the evolution of the ANS dysregulation (Stage 1 hypertension). METHODS: During a regional epidemic we conducted a randomi…

The role of the autonomic nervous system in control of cardiac and air-breathing responses to sustained aerobic exercise in the African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus.

Clarias gariepinus is a facultative air-breathing catfish that exhibits changes in heart rate (ƒH) associated with air-breaths (AB). A transient bradycardia prior to the AB is followed by sustained tachycardia during breath-hold. This study evaluated air-breathing and cardiac responses to sustained aerobic exercise in juveniles (total length~20cm), and how exercise influenced variations in fH associated with AB. In particular, it investigated the role of adrenergic and cholinergic control in cardiac responses, and effects of pharmacological abolition of this control on air-breathing responses.

Autonomic Nervous System Responses to Rest and Exertion Following Concussion (the Measuring ANSWERS Study): Protocol for a 2-Aim Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation is increasingly linked to concussion. However, studies examining the relationship between concussion and ANS measures, such as heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV), and pupillary light reflex (PLR), are limited by small sample sizes, inconsistent control of confounders, and methodological heterogeneity, thereby limiting clinical translation. OBJECTIVE: The Measuring Autonomic Nervous System in Warfighters Following Exertion and Resting Stressors (ANSWERS) study aims to address these limitations by incorporating adequate sample sizes, u…

Risk prediction in post-infarction patients with moderately reduced left ventricular ejection fraction by combined assessment of the sympathetic and vagal cardiac autonomic nervous system.

AIM: Most deaths after myocardial infarction (MI) occur in patients with normal or moderately reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF >35%). Periodic repolarization dynamics (PRD) and deceleration capacity (DC) are novel ECG-based markers related to sympathetic and vagal cardiac autonomic nervous system activity. Here, we test the combination of PRD and DC to predict risk in post-infarction patients with LVEF >35%. METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 823 survivors of acute MI with LVEF >35%, aged ≤80years and in sinus rhythm. PRD and DC were obtained from 30-min ECG-recordings within th…

Cardiovascular effects of the essential oil of Alpinia zerumbet leaves and its main constituent, Terpinen-4-ol, in rats: role of the autonomic nervous system.

Cardiovascular effects of intravenous ( i. v.) treatment with the essential oil of Alpinia zerumbet (EOAZ) were investigated in rats. Additionally this study examined (I) whether the autonomic nervous system is involved in the mediation of EOAZ-induced changes in mean aortic pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR), and (II) whether these changes could be, at least in part, attributed to the actions of terpinen-4-ol (Trp-4-ol), the major constituent of EOAZ. In both pentobarbitone-anaesthetised and conscious rats, i. v. bolus injections of EOAZ (1 to 20 mg/kg) elicited immediate and dose-dependent d…

The usefulness of breathing and relaxation techniques influencing the autonomic nervous system state in psychiatry. A subjective review of contemporary research. Part 2 - Western tradition.

The authors present a subjective review of recent research on the use of selected techniques influencing the state of the autonomic nervous system, based on the Western tradition, i.e. autogenic training by Johannes Heinrich Schultz and progressive muscle relaxation by Edmund Jacobson. The basic assumptions of both methods are discussed, taking into account the modifications that have occurred since their creation, pointing to their consequences and the necessity of taking them into account in research. The importance of including as accurate descriptions of the used interventions as possible …

Anatomical studies of the autonomic nervous system in the human pelvis by the whole-mount staining method: left-right communicating nerves between bilateral pelvic plexuses.

PURPOSE: Some recent neurophysiological studies have suggested cross-innervation of pelvic genitourinary organs by extrinsic left-right communicating nerves. However, no definite course for these nerves has been clearly determined macroanatomically in humans. In the present study we extensively investigated the adult human pelvis to elucidate their courses by the whole-mount staining method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 6 male human specimens that had been subjected to pathological dissection were examined by means of an acetylcholinesterase whole-mount staining method.
