A thermostable hydantoinase has been characterized from a mesophilic Bacillus sp.AR9. The hydantoinase produced by this Bacillus sp.AR9 is strictly D-specific and is constitutively produced with high yields (4500 U/ml) in this strain. The efficiency of Bacillus sphaericus strain 2362 (Vectolex) as larvicide against Mansonia spp. was studied. The objective of this study was to analyse in vivo the effect of oxygen on the nitrogenase of Bacillus polymyxa. The culture technique employed in this study prevented spore formation by B. polymyxa during the entire period of exposure to acetylene. Under these conditions the acetylene-reduction assay allowed quantification of nitrogenase activity over long incubation periods (44 h). A patient with acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) developed septicemia due to Bacillus cereus with subsequent rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuric renal failure. He died despite intensive care. Postmortem examination revealed diffuse muscle necrosis with infiltration of Gram-positive bacilli and widespread bacterial microthrombi in various organs. Granulomatous prostatitis is a recognized complication of intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin immunotherapy of superficial bladder cancer. Of 32 patients receiving such therapy 13 underwent prostatic core biopsy and/or fine needle aspiration for clinical indications. Prostatic induration or nodularity developed in 12 patients and 1 underwent biopsy for staging of known prostatic carcinoma.
