Disasters and perinatal health:a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The empirical literature on the effects of disaster on pregnancy and the postpartum period is limited. The objective of this review was to examine the existing evidence on the effect of disasters on perinatal health. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cinahl, PsycInfo), including literature on disasters and pregnancy outcomes (e.g., preterm birth, low birth weight, congenital anomalies), mental health, and child development. A total of 110 articles were identified, but many published reports were anecdotes or recommendati

Is age the limit for human-assisted reproduction techniques? 'Yes', said an Italian judge.

Although use of assisted reproduction techniques was examined by an ad hoc act in 2004 in Italy, there are many opposing views about ethical and economic implications of the technologies dealing with infertility and sterility problems. In this paper, the authors examine a recent judge's decision that ordered the removal and subsequent adoption of a 1-year-old child because her parents were considered too old to be parents. The couple had had recourse to heterologous artificial insemination abroad and decided to give birth in Italy. The judgement deals with and discusses the complex issue of th

Alternatives to oral regimens of contraception.

Alternatives to oral contraceptives are an integral part of contraception used worldwide. In order to empower women to correctly use contraception for as long as they choose not to become pregnant, healthcare practitioners and their patients must be educated about these methods as well as the full spectrum of available birth control options. Effective counseling is a key factor in helping a woman effectively chose a method that is appropriate for her. In order for contraceptive counseling to be effective, information should be accurate and provided in an unbiased manner. This review will help

Passing Strategies and Performative Identities: Coping with (In)Visible Chronic Diseases.

In this article I consider the role of passing and performance in the everyday lives of alkaptonuria (AKU) and vitiligo patients. Race, LGBTQ, gender and disability scholars have long used the term passing to describe sub-groups of people within marginal populations who intentionally manipulate their bodies or alter their behaviour in order to claim identities that are not socially assigned to them at birth. In this paper I demonstrate the effectiveness of the passing strategies that patients use in order to mitigate their disease symptoms and render them invisible, thus enabling them to pass

Preterm infant development, maternal distress and sensitivity: The influence of severity of birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the severity of prematurity based on birth weight on maternal distress and sensitivity and on infant development. METHODS: Sixty-eight mothers and their preterm babies (30 babies classified into Extremely-Low-Birth Weight-ELBW and 38 into Very-Low-Birth Weight-VLBW) were assessed at 9months of infant corrected age, using: Griffiths Scales for infant development, CARE-Index for maternal sensitivity during 5-minute of mother-infant interaction, and Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF) for maternal distress. Sixty-six healthy full-term infants (FT) a

Refractive errors and refractive development in premature infants.

PURPOSE: To examine refractive errors and refractive development in premature infants. METHODS: Premature infants in the retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening program were recruited and examined longitudinally between 28 and 58 weeks postmenstrual age. For performing cycloplegic retinoscopy, 1% tropicamide was administered, two drops with a 10-minute interval, in order to paralyze accommodation and to achieve cycloplegia. Birth weight, gestational age, gender and acute ROP disease were recorded. The relationship between spherical equivalent, astigmatism and postmenstrual age was evaluate

Perinatal Outcomes of Pregnancies Conceived by Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

Recent epidemiological studies showed significantly higher incidence of perinatal complications in newborns and women after the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Multiple pregnancies are more frequent after the use of ART. Singleton pregnancies following ART are more prone to preterm birth, low and very low birth weight (LBW and VLBW), small for gestational age (SGA) and perinatal mortality. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to summarize the results of relevant articles and to evaluate whether the mode of conception is the determining factor for different pregnancy outcomes aft

[Very preterm birth: should we be interested in maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index?].

UNLABELLED: Link between maternal body mass index (BMI) and pregnancy outcome is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To appreciate the impact of prepregnancy maternal BMI on very preterm birth (22-32 gestation's weeks). SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: To assess how maternal BMI does explain the mechanism of very preterm birth among live births. METHODS: Population-based study, including each mother with a live or stillborn baby was included in a geographically defined (Poitou-Charentes and Franche-comté, France) case-control study in 2004 to 2006. Leanness (BMI<18.5kg/m(2)) and overweight and obesity (BMI> or =25kg

Investigating the mechanical function of the cervix during pregnancy using finite element models derived from high-resolution 3D MRI.

Preterm birth is a strong contributor to perinatal mortality, and preterm infants that survive are at risk for long-term morbidities. During most of pregnancy, appropriate mechanical function of the cervix is required to maintain the developing fetus in utero. Premature cervical softening and subsequent cervical shortening are hypothesized to cause preterm birth. Presently, there is a lack of understanding of the structural and material factors that influence the mechanical function of the cervix during pregnancy. In this study we build finite element models of the pregnant uterus, cervix, and

Maternal and neonatal morbidity associated with in vitro fertilization.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this case-control study was to examine the maternal and neonatal morbidities associated with in vitro fertilization (IVF) in a single large teaching hospital. It was hypothesized that IVF mothers would have more perinatal complications and IVF infants would have higher mortality and morbidity rates than non-IVF control subjects. METHODS: One hundred forty-three gestations resulting from 101 IVF pregnancies, which included singletons (n = 62), twins (n = 72), and triplets (n = 9), were compared with equal numbers of non-IVF control subjects. Each pregnancy was matched

Delivery of the Nonpresenting Twin First: Rates and Associated Factors.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the rate of delivery of the nonpresenting twin first and to identify risk factors for such an event by using a cohort of opposite-sex twins for whom the intrauterine order was well documented with ultrasonography before delivery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all opposite-sex dichorionic twins in a single tertiary center between 2002 and 2016. Reports of ultrasonograms performed less than 2 weeks before birth were reviewed for information on twins' presenting order in relation to fetal sex. Intrauterine labeling was compared with labeling at the

Early neonatal lamb mortality: postmortem findings.

An investigation of stillbirth and early neonatal lamb mortality was conducted in sheep flocks in Norway. Knowledge of actual causes of death are important to aid the interpretation of results obtained during studies assessing the risk factors for lamb mortality, and when tailoring preventive measures at the flock, ewe and individual lamb level. This paper reports on the postmortem findings in 270 liveborn lambs that died during the first 5 days after birth. The lambs were from 17 flocks in six counties. A total of 27% died within 3 h after birth, 41% within 24 h and 80% within 2 days. Most la
