Four groups comprising 16 broiler birds each were given benzalkonium chloride (BC) at 100, 300, 500 and 700 ppm in drinking water for 40 days and one group of 16 birds (control) was kept on plain water. The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate the relation between serum leptin level and fat deposition in patients with eating disorders. 40 female inpatients with anorexia (n=24) or bulimia nervosa (n=16) were assessed for leptin level, body mass index (BMI), and percentage body fat by dual-energy X-ray absorbometry (DXA). The results show that percentage body fat is a better predictor for leptin level and clinical findings in eating disordered patients than BMI. We discuss the necessity for DXA measurements in anorectic patients for prognostic and research purposes.

Correlation of stature and body weight and the eruption of permanent teeth with four sexual maturity criteria (menarche, pubic hair, axillary hair and breast development) was studied in 102 Southern Chinese girls aged between 11 years, 9 months and 12 years, 3 months and born and brought up in Hong Kong. With respect to all four selected criteria, the early sexual maturers were significantly taller and heavier and had more erupted permanent teeth with p values ranging from < 0.01 to < 0.001 levels than the late maturers.
